Browns Rumors: Manziel, QB, Mayhew, DC

When the Browns hired Hue Jackson as their new head coach, we heard almost immediately that the former Bengals offensive coordinator had made it clear he was prepared to move on from former first-round pick Johnny Manziel. Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (video link) echoes that sentiment, suggesting that the young signal-caller is “all but gone,” and it’s just a formality at this point that Cleveland will part ways with him.

According to Cole, the Browns, who hold the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft, are strongly considering using that selection on a quarterback, whether it’s Jared Goff, Paxton Lynch, or someone else. Waiting until the second round to nab a QB is also an option for Cleveland — it’s worth noting that, with the Browns and Titans flip-flopping in the second round, and the Patriots not having their first-round pick this year, Cleveland’s second pick will be 32nd overall, essentially making it a first-rounder.

Here are a few more Browns updates:

  • The Browns are attempting to move quickly to fill the vacancy in their front office, according to Josina Anderson of, who tweets that former Lions GM Martin Mayhew is a candidate for the job.
  • The opening in the Browns’ front office is a top personnel position, but not technically a general manager job, which means other teams will have more leeway to deny requests to interview their executives. According to Ian Rapoport of (via Twitter), that has already happened with the Bears — the Browns requested permission to speak to Bears director of college scouting Joe Douglas, and Chicago turned them down.
  • Earlier this afternoon, we learned that Titans defensive coordinator Ray Horton is considered a top candidate for the Browns’ defensive coordinator job, if Tennessee is willing to let him go. Mary Kay Cabot of (Twitter link) hears that Buccaneers DC Leslie Frazier is also a candidate for the same position in Cleveland.
  • The Browns won’t retain quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell, according to Pat McManamon of While O’Connell did a decent job with Manziel this past season, Jackson wants to pick his own guy for the job.

It’s amazing that Jerry Jones has time to post his crazy trade fantasies on this website.

Yeah. Great deal for the Lions. They give up their offense and get Justin Gilbert. What a return. Go play Madden. No GM would ever do that trade from any angle. It was stupid and didn’t address any teams needs even if you say the Browns get Stafford. You expect the cowboys to get three WRs they couldn’t pay, Murray they couldn’t pay and Manziel and RG3. Your nuts.

Dude if you take time to read the hole think you understand the idea lions are rebuilding and Johnson is talking about retiring and grow up a cowboys fan brown are going to trade Thomas and if NFL reinstate Gordon mite be free agent and so and if your read the hole thing you now for trade to work Cowboys would have to get player involved to take redo there contracts along with there on big contracts and hate tell you lions would get good #2 receiver and along Gilbert and Hitchens and Wilson are very good young linebacker and and lions would have 3 First round pics in top 16 and Browns would not only get qb they needed since they came back in the league and give tackle and guard that give them cowboys starting right side to 2014 offline that consider best off line in the game it give them starting ss and replacement starting cb young te and we help build oup the weakest receiving core in NFL and 2 round pic help them and give lions 25 extra money to spend on free agents and still give Browns 33 million to spend on free agents and this trade help Cowboys win the super bowl . Lions fans like it or not lions are going to have to rebuild and Browns well there the Browns and only way there going to win is qb and this trade give them an still in 20’s that has been to pro bowl and give them chance to win. This trade would work rather you like it or not and when it come to manziel there going to release him any way and manziel and rg3 who is also going to be release could end up in Dallas anyway since both have all ready said they want to be Cowboys any way.

And if you know any thing about football you know that the only reason he end up a eagle was jelly and to hurt Cowboys and that why he didn’t use him. He north /south runner and and in chip off he doesn’t work. The Eagles are going release Murray to save money so they can try to get qb and def help and Murray will jump at chance to come back to Cowboys and if he does you see the old Murray and he offline know each other watch he see that money won’t make you happy . He miss Cowboys nation and that off line . And Jerry realize that it was mistake letting Murray go . So you see and if this happen Cowboys in the super bowl next year book it
