Kareem, who was just activated off of injured reserve, is being waived to make room for defensive end Montez Sweat, acquired by trade this morning. The Bears also announced a practice squad release, indicating a possible return for Kareem on that unit. The Colts are expected to do the same with Boettger.

O’Connor will lose his active roster spot to make room for quarterback John Wolford, whom Tampa Bay officially promoted today in order to ward off interest parties such as the Rams and Vikings, both of whom are experiencing injury issues at quarterback.

Minor NFL Transactions: 9/22/23

Today’s minor transactions heading into the weekend:

The 49ers are essentially reversing transactions made this week. Brown was released this week in order to make room for Swilling on the active roster. Now, Brown will rejoin the roster with Swilling making room for him. Swilling will likely find his way back to the Niners’ practice squad if he clears waivers.

With Jackson going on injured reserve, the Titans need to turn to someone else in the return game. Chris Moore has some kickoff return experience from his time in Baltimore. Kyle Phillips had five punt returns for the team last year, but he remains on IR, as well.

Reese made the initial 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss. He will likely get a lot of bites on the waiver wire.

The Bears released Peterman on Wednesday, but Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times notes the team was planning to use the roster spot to poach a player off a another team’s practice squad. Chicago’s effort did not produce a signing, however, leaving Peterman’s spot vacant. When a team makes an effort to sign a player off another club’s P-squad, the team can promote the player to its 53-man roster to keep him from being poached. The seventh-year QB, who is in his second season with the Bears, again give the team three active-roster QBs — along with Justin Fields and rookie Tyson Bagent.

49ers To Sign CB Anthony Brown

Released from the Steelers’ practice squad last week, Anthony Brown has another deal in place. This one will provide a spot on a 53-man roster.

The 49ers are signing Brown to their active roster, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. A six-year Cowboys contributor, Brown is attempting to come back from a December 2022 Achilles tear.

San Francisco saw two of its corners — starters Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas — exit during its Week 2 win in Los Angeles. Lenoir was cleared from concussion protocol, returning to the game and intercepting a Matthew Stafford pass, but Thomas did not return to action. With the 49ers preparing to host the Giants in a Thursday-night matchup, they are short on time to have the third-year corner back in action.

Lenoir has worked as San Francisco’s nickel starter in each of the first two games but moved outside when Thomas went down against the Rams, bringing offseason addition Isaiah Oliver back into the mix. The 49ers closed the game with a Lenoir-Oliver-Charvarius Ward corner combination. Brown is on track to become a depth piece.

Brown, 29, spent much of his Cowboys tenure as the team’s primary slot corner. He fared well enough to earn a second contract with the team. The Cowboys re-signed Brown to a three-year, $15.5MM deal in 2020 and kept him in place as a regular during Dan Quinn‘s first two seasons. Last year’s tear has thrown the 2017 sixth-rounder’s career off course, but the 49ers evidently feel comfortable with his form.

Quinn used Brown as a full-time player up until the injury, using the 5-foot-11 cover man on at least 90% of Dallas’ defensive snaps in each of the past two seasons. Helping the Cowboys rebound from a dreadful 2020 defensive effort, Brown played a career-high 1,048 defensive snaps in 2021. He intercepted three passes that year, giving him nine for his career. The Cowboys, who also lost Jourdan Lewis to a season-ending injury last year, traded for Stephon Gilmore in March and are using 2022 Brown replacement DaRon Bland as their slot defender this year.

The Giants are not certain to have Wan’Dale Robinson available in Week 1. The 2022 second-round pick just came off the team’s active/PUP list, a sign the team believes he can return at some point during the season’s first four weeks. Beasley did not make the Giants’ 53-man roster but resided as a possible P-squad elevation option as Robinson protection. This moves nixes that path, as Beasley cannot play until Week 5.

Morrow has gone from potential Eagles starting linebacker to a player who did not make the defending NFC champions’ active roster. But the team still has the former Raiders and Bears starter in its plans. Morrow, who had signed a one-year deal worth the league minimum this offseason, is now positioned as a depth piece who could be elevated ahead of Week 1. Teams can use two P-squad elevations each week, in addition to standard promotions — which require corresponding roster moves — ahead of the Saturday-afternoon deadline.

Better known as the player chosen with the second-round pick obtained for DeAndre Hopkins, Blacklock moved from Houston to Minnesota via trade in August 2022. But he did not make the Vikings’ 53-man roster this year. The fourth-year D-lineman will be a depth option for the Jaguars.

Steelers Add CB Anthony Brown To Practice Squad

A few teams have looked outside their organizations to make notable additions via the practice squad. The Steelers are among them, having signed cornerback Anthony Brown to their taxi squad.

The deal will give Brown clarity on at least his short-term future. His Cowboys tenure was brought to an abrupt halt by an Achilles tear in December, which sidelined him for the rest of the 2022 campaign and led to his lengthy stay on the open market. If healthy, he will be a prime candidate to be elevated to Pittsburgh’s active roster before long.

Brown was a regular in Dallas’ secondary as early as his rookie season in 2016. He logged 69 starts amongst his 94 appearances, seeing the field for over 1,000 snaps in 2021. The former sixth-rounder set career highs in tackles (71), interceptions (three) and pass deflections (17) that year, making his three-year, $15.5MM pact a worthwhile investment on the team’s part.

Seeing considerable time both in the slot and on the perimeter, Brown’s chances of remaining with the Cowboys were hurt not only by the Achilles injury but also the trade acquisition of Stephon Gilmore. The latter will be a full-time starter along with the recently-extended Trevon Diggs. Dallas made another alteration at the CB spot with the trade sending Kelvin Joseph to the Dolphins for Noah Igbinoghene.

The Steelers have made a number of moves on the backend themselves, signing Patrick Peterson and using the No. 32 selection in the draft on Joey Porter Jr. Slot man Arthur Maulet signed with the Ravens, a team which showed interest in Brown before he agreed to head to Pittsburgh. A role on the inside could be the latter’s best path to playing time on the active roster as he looks to demonstrate a return to full health and rebuild his free agent value in the process.

Ravens Set 53-Man Roster

The Ravens did a bit of work in the days leading up to the roster cut deadline, including the announced release of veteran running back Melvin Gordon. Still, there was a bit of work left to be done today. Here’s the remaining moves Baltimore made in order to get down to 53 players:

The most surprising moves here come at cornerback. Especially with the recent injury trouble facing star corner Marlon Humphrey, the Ravens choice to not only cut two reliable backups in Seymour and Worley but also to waive the fifth-round rookie draft pick Kelly is shocking. The team did reinforce with several free agent veterans like Rock Ya-Sin, Ronald Darby, and Arthur Maulet, and they’re hoping to see strong seasons from second year cornerbacks Damarion Williams and Jalyn Armour-Davis, both of whom were limited in their rookie seasons due to injury. Look for them to attempt to retain Seymour and Worley on the practice squad. Kelly will have to clear waivers in order to return, a tough ask for a fifth-round talent. Williams is expected to be placed on injured reserve following the deadline, opening a door for Worley or Seymour to return to the active roster.

Brown and Johnson put forth valiant efforts throughout the preseason, essentially allowing starting quarterback Lamar Jackson and primary backup Tyler Huntley to escape the preseason without really being touched. Unfortunately, neither made a strong enough case to remain on the regular season roster. Brown is surely a candidate to return to the practice squad, if he clears waivers.

Baltimore’s tradition of scouting undrafted talent continued this year as the team saw two free agent rookies make the initial 53-man roster. Former East Carolina running back Keaton Mitchell gave some strong impressions that helped him beat out Gordon and fellow undrafted signee Wright. Malik Hamm, Lafayette’s all-time sack leader, makes the team behind as of yet unproven pass rushers Odafe Oweh and David Ojabo, veteran Jadeveon Clowney, and fellow rookie Tavius Robinson, a fourth-round pick out of Ole Miss.

Outside linebacker Tyus Bowser remains on the non-football injury list to start the season alongside long snapper Nick Moore, rookie guard Andrew Vorhees, and cornerback Trayvon Mullen. He’ll miss at least the first four games of the season.

CB Ronald Darby Visits Titans, To Meet With Ravens

10:42am: The Ravens indeed added Brown to their workout, Anderson tweets. This marks Brown’s first known audition since his December Achilles tear.

9:01am: More than 10 months after he suffered an ACL tear, Ronald Darby continues to generate interest. The veteran cornerback will up his summer visit count to four Thursday.

Having already met with the Texans and Vikings this year, Darby traveled to Tennessee for a Titans visit this week. In light of the foot surgery Marlon Humphrey underwent Wednesday, the Ravens are set to meet with Darby today, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com notes (Twitter links). Darby met with the Vikings in early August and the Texans in July.

Injuries have limited Darby, 29, for much of his career. He missed six Broncos games in 2021 and went down in Week 5 of last season. Last year’s ACL tear marked familiar territory for Darby, who sustained the same injury in 2018. While the former second-round pick was able to rebound from the previous knee malady to set up another Eagles deal, a Washington pact and the three-year, $30MM Broncos accord, he is running out of time to show teams he can stay healthy.

When available, Darby has generally played well. Pro Football Focus ranked him as a top-30 corner in 2020, his only career 16-game season — one that led the Broncos to authorize that eight-figure-per-year pact. PFF also viewed the 5-foot-11 defender as having a strong start to the 2022 campaign prior to the knee setback. The Florida State product has made 88 regular-season starts and operated as a first-stringer in Super Bowl LII with the Eagles.

The Titans have made a few early-round investments at corner in recent years. They have used four first- or second-round picks on this position since 2017. While Adoree’ Jackson departed after the 2020 slate, the Titans still carry Kristian Fulton (Round 2, 2020), Caleb Farley (Round 1, 2021) and Roger McCreary (Round 2, 2022). Fulton and McCreary represent key cogs for the AFC South team, but Farley has been unable to shake his injury trouble. The Virginia Tech product, who underwent season-ending back surgery to wrap a campaign in which the Titans reduced his playing time, remains on the team’s active/PUP list. Back trouble dinged Farley’s stock coming into the NFL as well.

The Ravens are dealing with multiple injuries at the position. In addition to Humphrey’s foot procedure, second-year cover man Damarion Williams underwent ankle surgery that is expected to sideline him until at least October. Jalyn Armour-Davis and recent pickup Arthur Maulet have also missed time due to injury in training camp. John Harbaugh said Humphrey should not be expected to be shelved for an extended period, but he is on track to miss regular-season games. With this quartet down, Brandon Stephens, Kevon Seymour and Ar’Darius Washington reside as Baltimore’s top available corners.

In addition to Darby, the Ravens have former Cowboys corner Anthony Brown on their radar, CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson tweets. Brown, 29, joins Darby in coming off a season-ending injury. The six-year Cowboy cover man, however, suffered his injury — an Achilles tear — in early December. Brown served as a regular Cowboys slot corner, re-signing with the team on a three-year deal worth $15.5MM in 2020. His work on that contract ended a bit early, with the Achilles tear occurring in Week 13 of last season.

Despite catching on with Dallas as a 2017 sixth-round pick, Brown started 69 games with the team. The Cowboys have not been connected to a reunion with Brown this year, having traded for Stephon Gilmore in March. Dallas also rosters Jourdan Lewis, who is also coming off a season-ending injury. While Darby has been connected to a handful of teams this offseason, Brown has hovered off the radar since his Cowboys contract expired.
