Jaguars Cut RB DuJuan Harris

DuJuan Harris‘ time with the Jaguars did not last long. The team released the running back on Friday morning, as Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweetsDuJuan Harris (vertical)

Harris, 29 on Sunday, inked a deal with Jacksonville on Aug. 20. He had a grand total of seven carries for 26 yards in the preseason and had zero receptions. He held down the fort while rookie Leonard Fournette and T.J. Yeldon dealt with injuries, but both players should be ready to go for Week 1, which meant that Harris was no longer needed.

Last year, Harris totaled 38 carries for 138 yards (3.6 YPC) for the Niners, adding eight catches for 115 yards and a TD. The 49ers re-signed him to a one-year deal in March but released him just a few weeks later.

Jaguars Sign DuJuan Harris

The Jaguars have signed running back DuJuan Harris, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter). Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union tweets that the team has waived/injured CB Charles Gaines to make room for Harris.

DuJuan Harris

With Leonard Fournette and T.J. Yeldon both battling injuries, Jacksonville needed depth at the running back position. Harris began his career with the Jags back in 2011, when he signed with the club as an undrafted free agent out of Troy. He has also seen regular season action with the Packers, Seahawks, and 49ers, and he accumulated 38 carries for 138 yards (3.6 YPC) for San Francisco last year, along with eight catches for 115 yards and a score. The 49ers re-signed him to a one-year deal this March but released him just a few weeks later.

Fournette, of course, is expected to anchor the Jags’ offense after being selected with the No. 4 overall pick in this year’s draft, and O’Halloran reports that Fournette is very optimistic about his chances of suiting up on Week 1. He sustained a foot injury on August 12 but indicated he has made good progress in the last week. And, although the high ankle sprain that he suffered with LSU last year was on the same leg as his current foot ailment, he indicated that the two injuries are not related.

Chris Ivory will be Jacksonville’s No. 2 back this season, so assuming Fournette is healthy, Harris will compete with Yeldon for the team’s No. 3 job, along with the likes of Jonathan Grimes, Corey Grant, and Tim Cook.

In the same piece linked above, O’Halloran reports that wide receiver Marqise Lee, who is dealing with an ankle injury that initially looked severe, also plans to be ready by Week 1.

49ers To Release RB DuJuan Harris

The 49ers are parting ways with running back DuJuan Harris. Harris took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to bid farewell to San Francisco: DuJuan Harris

Its been real! I’m blessed for the memories and it was great being a part of this legendary organization. All love, see y’all later!,” Harris wrote.

The 49ers re-signed Harris to a one-year deal in late March, but the running back depth chart has become quite crowded since then. A pair of moves in April brought Tim Hightower and Kapri Bibbs into the fold and the selection of Utah running back Joe Williams in the fourth round only contributed to the logjam.

Harris, 28, first joined the 49ers in 2015 when he was plucked from the Ravens’ practice squad. This past season, he averaged 3.6 yards per carry on 38 attempts in ten games. He also added eight receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown.

49ers To Re-Sign DuJuan Harris

The 49ers are re-signing reserve running back DuJuan Harris to a one-year deal, reports Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee (Twitter link).

DuJuan Harris

The 28-year-old Harris first joined the 49ers in 2015, when they signed him off the Ravens’ practice squad. Harris is now coming off a 10-game 2016 campaign in which he averaged 3.6 yards per carry on 38 attempts. He also caught eight passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. A veteran of eight NFL organizations since going undrafted from Troy in 2011, Harris has totaled 590 yards and two scores on 145 carries, good for 4.1 per rush, and 21 receptions for another 244 yards.

Although Harris hasn’t seen much action in his career, he’s easily the 49ers’ most established running back behind starter Carlos Hyde. After losing Shaun Draughn in free agency, their other options are Mike Davis and Raheem Mostert. The 49ers also have well-paid fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who they hope will serve as a weapon next season.

Top 2017 Free Agents By Position 3.0: Offense

The initial wave of NFL free agency is now complete, and while many of the league’s top available players are now off the board, there are still plenty of quality options still on the open market.

Listed below are our rankings for the top 15 free agents at each offensive position. These rankings aren’t necessarily determined by the value of the contracts – or the amount of guaranteed money – that each player is expected to land in free agency. These are simply the players we like the most at each position, with both short- and long-term value taken into account.

Restricted and exclusive-rights free agents, as well as players who received the franchise tag, aren’t listed here, since the roadblocks in place to hinder another team from actually acquiring most of those players prevent them from being true free agents.

We’ll almost certainly be higher or lower on some free agents than you are, so feel free to weigh in below in our comments section to let us know which players we’ve got wrong.

Here’s our breakdown of the current top 15 free agents by offensive position for 2017:

Quarterback:

  1. Jay Cutler
  2. Chase Daniel
  3. Ryan Fitzpatrick
  4. Colin Kaepernick
  5. Josh McCown
  6. Robert Griffin III
  7. Case Keenum
  8. Matt McGloin
  9. Mark Sanchez
  10. Christian Ponder
  11. Blaine Gabbert
  12. Ryan Nassib
  13. Shaun Hill
  14. Kellen Moore
  15. Austin Davis

Tony Romo is not a free agent…at least not yet. If the Cowboys do not find a suitable trade and release him, you’ll find him at the top of this list.

Laugh if you must, but Cutler is far and away the best quarterback available on the open market. While most of this year’s QB-needy teams are done with their free agent shopping, the Jets are still searching for their 2017 starter and no one would make more sense for them than Cutler. He’s not all that far removed from playing solid football and he’s a logical transitional option for the Jets until they can isolate a better, younger option for 2018. Jay Cutler (Vertical)

Kaepernick’s reps wisely told the press that he will be standing for the National Anthem this year. Still, Kaepernick is an outspoken guy who wants to use his platform to discuss hot button issues, so there’s no guarantee that the media circus around him will cease. Jets owner Woody Johnson loves seeing his team on the back pages of the New York tabloids, but even he has to have more sense than to entertain Kaepernick. McCown, who has been contact with the team, would be an okay choice if they can’t get something done with Cutler. Chase Daniel could be an option too, but there isn’t much game film on him.

Needless to say, the No. 3 ranked player on this list isn’t an option in New York.

Running back:

  1. Adrian Peterson
  2. LeGarrette Blount
  3. Jamaal Charles
  4. Rashad Jennings
  5. Tim Hightower
  6. DeAngelo Williams
  7. Chris Johnson
  8. Christine Michael
  9. Benny Cunningham
  10. Bobby Rainey
  11. Brandon Bolden
  12. Denard Robinson
  13. James Starks
  14. Matt Asiata
  15. Kenjon Barner

Honorable mention: DuJuan Harris, Antonio AndrewsKhiry Robinson

Adrian Peterson (vertical)The Vikings have moved on and Peterson will not be back in Minnesota. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess. When Peterson’s option was declined by the Vikings earlier this month, there were tons of stories (likely sourced by Peterson’s camp) about interest from a litany of contenders. Since then, each team – through anonymous sources – has denied being in the mix for the veteran. It would be easy to doubt Peterson at this juncture, but he has come back from serious injuries multiple times in his career and he is only one year removed from his stellar 2015 campaign. He gets the top spot over the bruising Blount as well as Charles, who hasn’t been healthy in a long while.

Jennings was brought to New York with the idea that he would be the team’s workhorse. Unfortunately, two of his three seasons with the G-Men were marred by injury. Jennings is currently putting his agility to good use on Dancing With The Stars and it remains to be seen how committed he is to football. After that, we have a trio of vets (Hightower, Williams, CJ2K) who could still advance the ball in limited spurts.

In case you’re wondering – Mike Gillislee is not listed here because he is a restricted free agent.

Extra Points: Colts, Okung, Panthers, Ngata

Restricted free agent defensive tackle Zach Kerr has yet to be tendered an offer by the Colts and an NFL source tells Stephen Holder of the Indy Star that indications are he won’t be tendered at all. Kerr’s playing time vacillated last year but he still finished out with 2.5 sacks. Since joining the Colts as a UDFA in 2014, he has played nose tackle, defensive tackle, and defensive end. In related news, the Colts have decided against tendering an offer to linebacker Josh McNary.

Minor NFL Transactions: 10/22/16

Here are today’s minor moves.

  • The 49ers performed some more DuJuan Harris-related paperwork by again adding the running back to their active roster from their practice squad, Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News reports. San Francisco cut defensive tackle Taylor Hart, whom the team claimed from the Eagles off waivers earlier this season, to make room. This marks Harris’ third promotion to the 53-man unit after being called up in September twice and subsequently waived soon after. The 49ers are going to be without Carlos Hyde in Week 7 and are in need of a third running back behind Mike Davis and Shaun Draughn. Harris hasn’t played in a game yet this season.
  • The Saints became the latest team to waive quarterback Joe Callahan. New Orleans jettisoned the 23-year-old signal-caller and signed linebacker Chris McCain from its practice squad, Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. Callahan has a path back to the Saints, with the team wanting him back, per Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (on Twitter). But the Packers did as well and saw the Saints claim him before he could pass to their practice squad, so Callahan landing somewhere soon seems likely.
  • In a wide receiver exchange, the Buccaneers promoted Freddie Martino to their 53-man roster and waived Donteea Dye, the team announced. Martino broke into the NFL with the 2014 Falcons, who employed current Bucs HC Dirk Koetter as their OC. He played in two games earlier this season but has yet to catch a pass in the NFL.

Minor NFL Transactions: 10/1/16

Here are today’s minor moves.

  • The 49ers cut running back DuJuan Harris and signed tight end Je’Ron Hamm, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com reports. This represents the third time the Niners have cut Harris, a former Packer for three years, this season. Hamm could be needed for emergency duty, with Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek listed as questionable for San Francisco’s Week 4 tilt against Dallas. Hamm saw action in one game with Washington last season and spent a game on the 49ers’ active roster in 2015 as well.
  • Offensive tackle Jeremy Vujnovich will join the Colts‘ 53-man roster after the team signed him off its practice squad, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 and CBS 4 reports (on Twitter). The 25-year-old tackle has yet to see action in an NFL game. Chappell notes this could be an indication right tackle Joe Reitz isn’t progressing sufficiently from a back injury.

49ers Re-Sign DuJuan Harris, Cut Chris Harper

In something of a reversal of Sunday’s transaction, the 49ers are cutting wide receiver Chris Harper and re-signing running back DuJuan Harris, as Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle tweets. Harris was dropped on Monday to make room for Harper’s promotion from the practice squad.

Harris has been yo-yo’d on and off the 49ers’ roster throughout the last couple of weeks. The running back was cut prior to the 53-man deadline only to be re-signed days later. Then, prior to the Niners’ Monday night contest against the Rams, he was dropped again. He’s back on the roster – for now. Harris, 28, split the 2015 season between the 49ers and the Seahawks.

Harper, 22, bounced on-and-off the Patriots’ 53-man roster during his rookie campaign in 2015, and ultimately appeared in five games with the club. Harper could revert to SF’s practice squad if he clears waivers. He did not see a pass thrown his way last night.
