Browns Cut Six Players

The Browns have begun to make their cuts in advance of tomorrow’s 75-man deadline, but still have plenty of moves left to make. According to a team release, Cleveland has waived two players and released four more, bringing the roster down to 84 players. The club will have to make nine more roster moves by tomorrow at 3:00pm central time.

Players who have less than four years of NFL experience and were let go by the team will have to go unclaimed on waivers before becoming free agents, while players with at least four years of experience are simply released, hitting free agency without passing through waivers. Here’s the breakdown for the Browns:

Today’s minor moves and signings in the NFL..

  • Cowboys linebackers Justin Anderson and guard Reshod Fortenberry were waived/injured, Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram tweets. Linebackers Jonathan Brown and Ka’Lial Glaud were signed.
  • The Patriots have agreed to bring back second-year linebacker Cameron Gordon to address some depth concerns, as Mike Reiss of ESPN.com tweets. The Patriots also announced that they have claimed guard Harland Gunn off waivers from the Falcons.
  • The Chiefs announced that they have signed former Missouri wide receiver L’Damian Washington.
  • The Patriots waived-injured Kevin Hughes and cut Vince Taylor with a failed physical designation, Wilson tweets.
  • The Packers announced that they have signed wide receiver Ed Williams.
  • The Cowboys waived-injured Justin Jackson, who tore his ACL over the weekend, Wilson tweets.
  • The Broncos signed wideout Corbin Louks, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post tweets. Louks, who was cut by the Chiefs in May, will fill the roster spot previously filled by Kyle Williams, who has hit the IR.
  • The Chargers signed former Packers defensive tackle Luther Robinson, Wilson tweets.
  • The Browns announced that they have signed running backs Timothy Flanders and Jalen Parmele and waived wide receiver Kevin Cone and defensive back Brandon Stephens, Nate Ulrich of the Beacon Journal tweets.
  • The Bills have signed free agent cornerback Merrill Noel, according to Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News (on Twitter). Noel was released by Buffalo back in June.

Earlier Updates:

  • The Chiefs waived backup defensive tackle Jerel Worthy, as Blair Kerkhoff of The Kansas City Star tweets. Worthy signed a futures deal with KC back in December. Worthy, a 2012 second-round pick out of Michigan State, tore his ACL in the final game of the 2012 season and played only 12 snaps in 2013. Worthy was traded from the Packers to the Pats in August of 2014 but he did not get on the field last season.
  • The Eagles signed rookie free agent wide receiver Mike Johnson, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. The Delaware product participated in the Eagles rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis and, apparently, he impressed the right people.
  • Linebacker/defensive end Austen Lane, who had stints with the Jaguars, Lions, and Bears, took to Twitter to announce his retirement.

Cardinals Sign Bruce Gaston, Cut Parmele

The Cardinals have signed defensive tackle Bruce Gaston off of the Dolphins’ practice squad, according to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com (on Twitter). Arizona has also released recently signed running back Jalen Parmele, so it sounds like Gaston will have a spot on the active roster.

Arizona signed Gaston as an undrafted free agent this spring and even though they liked him, he wound up being a roster casualty. After some time with the Patriots and then the Dolphins, he’s coming back to Arizona. The 22-year-old out of Purdue will give the Cards some extra depth on the defensive line.

Parmele was with the Cardinals during the preseason, but was a casualty when the team cut its roster down to 53 players for the regular season. The former Raven and Jaguar has 36 career NFL games to his credit, spending time as both a running back and as a kick returner.

Cardinals Sign Parmele; Dwyer To NFI List

1:55pm: Though they have the option not to, the Cardinals will pay Dwyer while he’s on the NFI list, according to Rapoport (via Twitter).

1:49pm: After deactivating him yesterday, the Cardinals have now removed Jonathan Dwyer from their 53-man roster, placing him on the reserve/non-football illness list, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Per Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic (Twitter link), the designation, which gives the team the option of not paying the running back, was made because there’s concern regarding Dwyer’s mental health. The police report of a domestic incident involving Dwyer and his family contains references to suicide, as Somers notes.

The Cardinals have replaced Dwyer on their roster with free agent running back Jalen Parmele, tweets Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. The former Raven and Jaguar was with the Cardinals during the preseason, but was a casualty when the team cuts its roster down to 53 players for the regular season.

In a related move, the Cardinals have also made a change to their practice squad, signing former Colts running back Kerwynn Williams to replace running back Chris Rainey, tweets Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com. As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com observes (via Twitter), Rainey also has a history of domestic violence.

Cardinals Cut Isaac Sopoaga, Marcus Benard

Two notable veterans are among the Cardinals’ latest wave of cuts, according to Rand Getlin of Yahoo! Sports, who reports (Twitter links) that defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and linebacker Marcus Benard have been released by the team. The decisions suggest that new addition Tommy Kelly has impressed the Cardinals so far at defensive tackle, and that the club doesn’t feel like Benard has earned a spot on its linebacking corps even following Daryl Washington‘s year-long suspension.
