Bears Auditioning OL Tre’ Jackson

Jackson, 24, was a fourth-round pick in 2015, and played a significant amount of snaps during his rookie campaign as he started nine games for New England. According to Pro Football Focus, Jackson was roughly average in 2015, grading as the NFL’s No. 47 guard. Knee injuries knocked Jackson out at the end of that season, however, and forced him to spend the entire 2016 campaign on the PUP list.

Jackson has already had a busy offseason, as he was waived by the Patriots in April. Claimed off waivers the following day by the Rams, Jackson never got a chance in Los Angeles after failing his physical. The Rams placed him back on the free agent market, and Jackson hasn’t drawn any known interest since.

If he signs with the Bears, Jackson would join the roster as a clear backup. Chicago already boasts one of the league’s best guard pairings in Kyle Long and Josh Sitton, while center Cody Whitehair was also excellent during his rookie season in 2016. Jackson would conceivably compete with Eric Kush, Hroniss Grasu, and rookie Jordan Morgan for a reserve role.

Rams Cut Tre’ Jackson

Tre’ Jackson‘s Rams stay did not last long. The third-year guard saw another team cut ties with him this week, with Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reporting (on Twitter) the Rams waived Jackson on Friday after he failed his physical.

The Rams picked up Jackson via waivers after the Patriots cut him earlier this week. Volin reports a bad knee led to Jackson failing his Rams physical. He will venture back onto the waiver wire as a result of this development.

The former fourth-round pick started nine games for the Patriots in 2015 but did not play last season. Knee injuries ended Jackson’s rookie campaign and prevented him from playing at all in 2016. After multiple teams cut ties with the 24-year-old interior blocker this week, it looks like the former Florida State talent may have to recover on his own before making a return to action.

Rams Claim OL Tre’ Jackson Off Waivers

Los Angeles can use reinforcements all along the front five after finishing as a bottom-five unit in both pass protection and run-blocking, per Football Outsiders. Veteran Rodger Saffold is projected to start at left guard, while Rob Havenstein is moving from right tackle to right guard, paving the way for former No. 2 overall pick to take over at tackle. Jackson, then, will likely start his Rams career as a depth option on the interior.

The Rams will now assume the two remaining years on Jackson’s rookie contract. They’ll take on Jackson’s base salaries of $615K and $705K over the next two respective seasons, leaving the Patriots with only Jackson’s accelerated bonus money (roughly $260K) as dead cap space.

Patriots To Waive OL Tre’ Jackson

Jackson, 24, was a fourth-round pick in 2015, and played a significant amount of snaps during his rookie campaign as he started nine games for New England. According to Pro Football Focus, Jackson was roughly average in 2015, grading as the NFL’s No. 47 guard. Knee injuries knocked Jackson out at the end of that season, however, and forced him to spend the entire 2016 campaign on the PUP list.

Because Jackson was a mid-round selection, much of his rookie contract was non-guaranteed. As such, the Patriots will only incur about $260K in dead money on their 2017 salary cap. Jackson’s release saves New England almost $500K.

Patriots Notes: Lewis, Jackson, Bennett, Butler

The Patriots have made team-friendly extension offers to a number of their pending free agents — including Martellus Bennett, Malcolm Butler, Jamie Collins, Dont’a Hightower, and Logan Ryan — but so far, no player has been interested in putting pen to paper, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. Given that the salary cap continues to rise, each of these impending free agents figures to cash in the open market, and therefore have little incentive to agree to any offer New England puts on the table.

Here’s more on the Patriots, who are now 5-1 after beating the Bengals today:

  • After opening the year on the physically unable to perform list, running back Dion Lewis is eligible to begin practicing this week. There’s a chance that happens, but it also wouldn’t be surprising for the Patriots to hold Lewis out of game action until after the club’s November bye, writes Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. Lewis has made “positive progress” as he recovers from ACL surgery, per Reiss, but New England will exude caution nonetheless.
  • Offensive lineman Tre’ Jackson also started the season on the PUP list, but he’s closer to returning than is Lewis, reports Reiss. Mason is expected to practice this week, and should be able to play again as soon very soon. In fact, New England’s release of guard Jonathan Cooper may have precipitated by Mason’s health.
  • The Patriots recently gave $52,700 raises to four practice squad players — running back Bishop Sankey, defensive end Geneo Grissom, guard Chris Barker, and defensive tackle Anthony Johnson. For what it’s worth, Grissom and Johnson were then promoted to active roster on Saturday.

Patriots Place Tre’ Jackson On PUP

The Patriots announced that they’ve placed guard Tre’ Jackson on the reserve/PUP list. As such, Jackson will miss the first six weeks of the regular season — New England will then have a three-week window during which it can decide to activate Jackson.Tre' Jackson (Vertical)

Jackson, 23, was selected by the Patriots in the second round of last year’s draft. During his rookie season, Jackson played a key role on a New England offensive line that was dealt injury blows throughout the year, and he ended up starting nine games (and appearing in 13). According to Pro Football Focus, Jackson was roughly average in 2015, grading as the NFL’s No. 47 guard.

Additionally, the Patriots announced last Tuesday defensive lineman Frank Kearse was released, but he was instead was placed on IR, according to the NFL transaction wire (via NESN’s Doug Kyed). Originally drafted by Miami in the seventh round of the 2011 draft, Kearse has also had stops with Carolina, Tennessee, Dallas, and Washington.

East Notes: Bills, Cowboys, Dolphins, Pats

The latest from the NFL’s two East divisions:

  • The Bills have fired defensive line coach Karl Dunbar after one year on the job, reports Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday (Twitter link). Dunbar had worked under head coach Rex Ryan with both the Jets and Bills since 2012.
  • The Cowboys are “intent” on decreasing cornerback Brandon Carr‘s $13.8MM cap hit, so whether he sticks with the team will hinge on his willingness to take a pay cut – something he may be open to – writes David Moore of The Dallas Morning News. Carr, who will turn 30 in May, joined the Cowboys in 2012 and has since intercepted six passes, though he hasn’t registered a pick since 2013.
  • The Dolphins haven’t closed the book on signing a veteran wideout at some point to replace the departed Rishard Matthews, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. As Jackson notes, available options include big names like Anquan Boldin, Marques Colston Roddy White and Percy Harvin.
  • The Patriots didn’t make a push to sign tight end Ben Watson before he agreed to a deal with Baltimore earlier this week, but they might have done so had he come cheaper, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com. Watson, who got two years and $8MM from the Ravens, was the Patriots’ first-round pick in 2004. He was with the franchise through the 2009 campaign, catching 167 passes and 20 touchdowns.
  • Patriots guard Tre’ Jackson missed both of the team’s playoff games with a knee injury. As a result, he has undergone a knee scope within the last month, per Reiss, who adds that it’s unlikely to affect the 23-year-old’s long-term availability. Jackson, a fourth-rounder last year, appeared in 13 games and made nine starts as a rookie.

AFC East Notes: Jets, Patriots, James, Jackson

The Jets–Patriots rivalry may have hit a new high (or perhaps, low) as Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reports that NFL officials swept New York’s locker room and questioned three New England employees during Sunday’s game — all at the behest of the Jets. A source tells Howe that the Jets were concerned that Gillette Stadium’s operations and radio frequencies were not up to par (for the record, the Jets have denied making any such requests).

Nevertheless, per Howe, the three Pats employees were interrogated throughout the third quarter, forced to hand over their phones and radios, and required to submit to a photograph. According to Howe, the Patriots were informed that none of the checks revealed anything improper, and that the club had done nothing wrong.

Let’s take a look at more out the AFC East, including fallout from last night’s contest…

  • The Dolphins‘ offensive line took a hit on Thursday night when Ja’Wuan James left the game with a toe injury, and it appears the team will have to get by without its starting right tackle for a few games. Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post (Twitter link) hears from a source that James is expected to miss four to six weeks.
  • During Thursday night’s game, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com (Twitter link) noted that the Patriots are coming “dangerously close” to running out of offensive lineman, and wondered if that could be a position they target before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
  • One Patriots offensive lineman who did go down in last night’s game — guard Tre’ Jackson — should be able to return at some point in the near future, as a source tells Howe in a separate piece that the MRI on Jackson’s left knee came back negative. He’s considered day-to-day, and though he does have 10 days to get healthy, Jackson’s history of knee issues is a concern, as Mike Reiss of ESPN.com details.
  • The Patriots, always on the lookout for useful tight ends, brought in veteran free agents Steve Maneri and Bear Pascoe for workouts this week, tweets Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. Per Reiss, the team is keeping its emergency lists fresh, so it doesn’t sound like either tight end will be signed by New England anytime soon.
