The Giants may have talked to several teams about Odell Beckham Jr. before pulling off a trade with the Browns, but general manager Dave Gettleman said he was “not actively shopping” the star wideout. Speaking to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, the executive discussed how the trade ultimately developed, noting that the receiver’s distractions (along with a hefty offer from Cleveland) made a trade more palatable.
“Obviously there’s a lot of stuff that factors in, but at the end of the day, in order for us to move Odell, the other team was going to have to knock it out of the park,’’ Gettleman said. “We were not actively shopping him.’’
The Browns apparently made an offer that grabbed the attention of the Giants, with New York receiving Cleveland’s first-round pick (No. 17 overall), third-round pick (95th overall), and young safety Jabrill Peppers. While the Giants never intended to trade Beckham when they signed him to a lucrative five-year, $95MM contract last August, the Browns’ offer was ultimately too good to refuse.
“Some have questioned why we signed Odell [last August] and then traded him,’’ Gettleman said. “We didn’t sign him to trade him but obviously things changed. Frankly, what changed is another team made an offer we couldn’t refuse. As it turned out, the fact he was signed for five more years made him very attractive and allowed us to get legitimate value.’’
Gettleman did acknowledge that he made one phone call regarding Beckham. Following the Bills’ failed pursuit of former Steelers wideout Antonio Brown, the Giants contacted Buffalo about a trade. The general managed said he also had “numerous conversations’’ with 49ers general manager John Lynch. Based on Gettleman’s assertions, we can only assume it was Lynch who contacted the Giants’ front office.
Lynch is turning out to be a bum, signing no one but injured players, have they drafted well and still have no wrs to pair with jimmy g. D line also stinks a beavy of top rated dline going there to do nothing.

That wasn’t a Lynch pick. If anything it helps his point that Lynch hasn’t got them anything better than the awful Trent Baalke.
Had he not drafted Kittle he would be considered a disaster. He’s looking more and more like Ball 2.0.
D Line will be much improved this season though. Add in (hopefully) Bosa or Allen to this group and it could be a top front in the league.
What’s wrong with signing high risk high reward players to low risk high reward contracts, there is an article before this one that explains how the niners are on the hook for a lot of guaranteed money this season and then next season the guarantees are less than 3 million a season to everyone they have signed so far, maybe lynch doesn’t know what he’s doing but someone in the niners organization does

…and by say not “actively” shopping OBJ, I mean I was only contacting ever team in the league maybe once or twice a day. Not like three or four times a day…
I believe Gettlemen wasn’t shopping him. He doesn’t know what he is doing g day to day hour to hour minute by minute. Absolutely clueless
Gettleman was ‘blown away’ by an offer that has since been panned by practically every analyst. If you’re going to trade an elite talent like OBJ, then you absolutely should be shopping him. You shouldn’t be just taking basically the first and only offer you received. Utterly clueless, both with this and his other moves.

I don’t believe Dorsey is Sicilian and the Colts or Broncos would be more likely to put a horse head in someones bed.
Look they just made a trade swapping players. I’m sure they had asked the question about OBJ, like what would it take. And the Browns did some DD, figured on what they needed for next year vs what they’d get with the draft picks, could they replace Peppers etc… and it’s a good package for the Giants.
