With Justin Herbert landing on IR, the Chargers have added some depth to the roster in Max Duggan. The rookie seventh-round pick landed on the team’s practice squad after the preseason, and he’s spent the entire season off the active roster. He’ll now have a chance at some game action, although Easton Stick is expected to get the first shot at the starting gig.

Duggan spent four years as TCU’s starter, culminating in a breakout senior campaign where he went 12-2 while tossing 32 touchdowns vs. eight interceptions. That performance helped his draft stock, with the Chargers making him the last QB off the board during the 2023 draft.

Rams TE Hunter Long Done For Season

Hunter Long‘s season has come to an end. The Rams tight end will require season-ending MCL surgery, coach Sean McVay told reporters.

“It’s a bummer for him. He was doing a really good job,” McVay said (via the team’s website). “He’s fought through a lot of adversity this year, and I thought he played really well in the early parts of that game. And so you hate that for him. But looking forward to him rehabbing and doing a good job with us moving forward.”

This past offseason, Long was traded to the Rams alongside a third-round pick for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. A thigh injury sidelined him for the first chunk of the season, but he managed to return to the active roster in mid-November.

In total, the tight end got into four games during his debut season in Los Angeles, including a start yesterday. Since returning to the lineup, Long was serving as the primary TE2 behind Tyler Higbee. With Long now done for the season, the Rams will likely turn back to some combination of Davis Allen and Brycen Hopkins.

Long was selected by the Dolphins in the third round of the 2021 draft. The Boston College product got into 16 games during his time in Miami, hauling in a single eight-yard catch.

Following a spree of illegal hits, Kareem Jackson was hit with a four-game ban back in October. That suspension ended up getting knocked down to two games, and following that absence, the defensive back has returned to the active roster. While Justin Simmons has long resided as the Broncos’ top safety, Pro Football Focus has graded Jackson as a top-20 player at the position this season.

Halapoulivaati Vaitai suffered a back injury that will require a stint on injured reserve, although there’s a chance the veteran lineman ends up having to miss the rest of the season. After starting all 25 of his appearances for the Lions between 2020 and 2021, Vaitai has started three of his six games in 2022.

Hunter Long was a third-round pick by the Dolphins in 2021 but only lasted two seasons in Miami, hauling in a single eight-yard catch. He was part of the Rams’ offseason trade return for Jalen Ramsey but hasn’t appeared in a game this season. The tight end landed on IR in early September with a thigh injury.

After being waived yesterday by the team who submitted a waiver claim for him at the start of the season, Wallace finds himself on the third NFL team of his career. While the trade that sent star Titans’ defender Kevin Byard to Philadelphia returned another safety in Terrell Edmunds, Wallace will come in and attempt to compete for some key playing time with Edmunds and Amani Hooker.

Humphrey has been promoted as a standard gameday elevation three times already, the limit for a practice squad contract, so in order to see any further game action, he needed to be on the active roster. If he is released and re-signs to the team’s practice squad, he’ll be able to be elevated three more times under a new practice squad deal.

Mayfield missed all of last season due to injury, but he started each the 16 games in his rookie campaign the year prior. The former 23-year-old struggled at guard, which prompted a change in plans for the Falcons on the interior. They tried Mayfield at tackle this offseason, but that has clearly not gone according to plan given today’s move. It will be interesting to see if Atlanta tries to keep him in the fold via the practice squad if that option presents itself next week.

Covington, 29, could have provided experienced depth along the defensive interior for the Lions had he made the 53-man roster. The former sixth-rounder has 102 games to his name, including 20 with the Chargers over the past two years. Covington has also spent time with the Texans, Cowboys and Bengals, collecting 196 tackles and 9.5 sacks. He will now have a slight head start on many other players with respect to finding a new home as teams sort through their final roster decisions.

Among the additions on today’s list, defensive back A.J. Moore is the most notable. The defensive back spent four years with the Texans to begin his career, compiling 69 tackles in 55 games while primarily playing on special teams. The 27-year-old spent a chunk of last season on the Titans practice squad, and he ultimately got into one game with the big-league club.

Dolphins Sign Third-Round TE Hunter Long

Hours away from their training camp’s outset, the Dolphins have all but one of their rookies signed. They came to terms with third-round pick Hunter Long on his four-year deal Monday.

The No. 81 overall pick, Long played three seasons at Boston College and declared for the draft after his junior year. The rookie tight end will follow ex-teammate Tommy Sweeney into the NFL (and the AFC East, with Sweeney on the Bills) and continue BC’s tight end pipeline to the league.

Following Sweeney’s exit, Long took over as the Eagles’ top tight end. He averaged 18.2 yards per reception (509 total) as a sophomore and set a new career-high with 685 yards in the pandemic-truncated 2020 slate. Long caught 57 passes and added five touchdowns last season, paving his way to the draft’s second day.

The Dolphins have now drafted tight ends on Day 2 in two of the past four drafts. Incumbent Mike Gesicki, a second-rounder out of Penn State in 2018, is entering his contract year. Despite finishing fourth among NFL tight ends with 703 receiving yards in 2020, Gesicki is not believed to have surfaced on the Dolphins’ extension radar just yet. He will team will Long this season.

Long’s signing leaves second-round tackle Liam Eichenberg as Miami’s lone unsigned draftee. The Dolphins join 28 other teams by beginning camp Tuesday.
