Texans Set 53-Man Roster

The Texans released a number of veterans today as they reduced their roster to 53 players:

Davis Mills and Kyle Allen sit atop Houston’s QB depth chart, making Jeff Driskel expendable, but there’s a chance the veteran sticks around as a third quarterback via the practice squad. Driskel spent the 2021 campaign in Houston, getting into a single game. He’s started nine of his 16 career games, tossing 13 touchdowns vs. eight interceptions.

Chris Conley has spent seven seasons in the NFL, and he could have provided some experience to the receivers room. There’s a chance the veteran could end up back in Houston, as the Texans decided to carry only four wideouts in Nico Collins, Brandin Cooks, Phillip Dorsett, and Chris Moore.

Antony Auclair started 13 games for Houston last season, mostly serving as a blocking tight end. Terrence Brooks started three of his 11 appearances, collecting 21 tackles.

Texans Sign T Cedric Ogbuehi

The Houston Texans will reportedly sign offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi to a one-year deal, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Ogbuehi has become a bit of journeyman over the past couple of years as he’s set to join his sixth NFL team. 

Ogbuehi was a first-round pick for the Bengals in the 2015 NFL Draft. After having his fifth-year option declined, Ogbuehi played a year each in Jacksonville and Seattle. He re-signed with the Seahawks for the 2021 season, but was placed on injured reserve before the season began and was released shortly after coming off IR. Ogbuehi signed with the Ravens, appearing in two games before getting released, and spent two days after that on the Titans’ practice squad.

Ogbuehi will find a familiar face in Houston, who just hired George Warhop a few weeks ago to coach their offensive line. Ogbuehi worked with Warhop when he played for the Jaguars in 2019.

Ravens Waive T Cedric Ogbuehi

After a little over a month in Baltimore, offensive lineman Cedric Ogbuehi‘s time as a Raven has come to an end. After being ruled out of the Ravens’ upcoming game in Pittsburgh with a thigh injury, the Ravens decided to waive the former first rounder, as reported by Jamison Hensley of ESPN.

The seven-year veteran was signed on October 27, one day after being released by the Seahawks, as a bit of insurance following the Ravens placement of their star blindside blocker, Ronnie Stanley, on the IR. After losing Stanley, Baltimore was relying on long-time Steeler Alejandro Villanueva at left tackle and utility-offensive lineman Patrick Mekari, who has started games at every position on the offensive line in his three years of professional football, at right tackle. The Ravens never needed to resort to Ogbuehi at tackle as the only game time he saw in Baltimore was on special teams.

For any teams looking for depth on the offensive line, Ogbuehi presents an intriguing option, provided he can get healthy, with a good amount of starting experience (30 starts out of 60 games played), with his most recent start coming in Week 4 of this season for Seattle.

Ravens To Sign T Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi will be returning to the AFC North. The former Bengals first-round pick agreed to terms with the Ravens on Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL.com tweets.

This is a practice squad agreement, though Garafolo adds Ogbuehi is expected to be bumped up to Baltimore’s active roster soon. The Ravens have a bye this week, but starting right tackle Patrick Mekari is dealing with a high ankle sprain.

It did not take long for Ogbuehi to find a new home. The Seahawks released the seventh-year veteran Monday, and the Ravens brought him in for a Tuesday workout. The sides will move forward together, with the Ravens set to be Ogbuehi’s fourth NFL team.

Injuries have certainly affected the Baltimore offense this season, and none is bigger than Ronnie Stanley‘s season-ending setback. Alejandro Villanueva is back as a left tackle, with Mekari moving from an interior role to right tackle. Ogbuehi, 29, began the season on Seattle’s IR list but was activated for Week 4, when he started against San Francisco. That marks the only game Ogbuehi has played this year.

Seahawks Release OL Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi‘s stint with the Seahawks has come to an end. Earlier today, Seattle released the veteran offensive tackle, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo (via Twitter).

The former first-round pick dealt with a biceps injury that forced him to miss the first chunk of the season. He was activated from IR when first eligible, and he started Week 4 while playing 86 percent of his team’s offensive snaps. He hasn’t seen the field since that time, and Seattle ultimately decided to move on from the 29-year-old.

Ogbuehi played just eight games with Seattle in 2020, starting four, but he did just enough to return to the Seahawks — his third NFL team. The Bengals drafted Ogbuehi in 2015, but after not meeting expectations, the Texas A&M product had to settle for a low-cost Jaguars deal in 2019 before coming to Seattle.

With 58 games (30 starts) on his resume, Ogbuehi will likely catch on with a squad that needs some extra depth on their offensive line.

Seahawks Place RB Rashaad Penny On IR

Some Seahawks Saturday roster reshuffling will bring in multiple reinforcements but move former first-round pick Rashaad Penny back to a familiar place. Penny is back on IR, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times tweets.

Penny’s contract year is off to a rough start, with the former San Diego State standout having played just seven snaps — all in Week 1 — before going down with a calf injury. He is now out for Seattle’s next three games.

While the Penny pick surprised most at the time, he has impressed at points. But he has not overtaken former seventh-round pick Chris Carson in Seattle’s lineup and has run into extensive injury misfortune. Penny tore an ACL late in the 2019 season and did not return until December 2020. He underwent another knee surgery this offseason. The Seahawks declined Penny’s fifth-year option in May.

Better news comes at other positions for the 1-2 Seahawks. They activated tackle Cedric Ogbuehi and tight end Colby Parkinson off IR. Parkinson suffered a foot fracture for the second straight summer. His return will help a team that has Gerald Everett on its reserve/COVID-19 list. Everett tested positive for the coronavirus this week and has not submitted a negative test yet. Ogbuehi’s return to work comes at a key juncture, with starting right tackle Brandon Shell ruled out for Week 4 with an ankle injury.

A fourth-round pick out of Stanford last year, Parkinson has played in just six games as a pro. But this year’s foot fracture was not as serious as the injury he suffered in 2020. Parkinson’s return stands to help a Seahawks team that has seen extensive tight end unavailability over the past few seasons.

Seahawks Shift Cedric Ogbuehi To IR

Cedric Ogbuehi‘s second Seahawks season will not start on time. The team placed the veteran tackle on IR Thursday. This will sideline Ogbuehi until at least Week 4.

The former first-round pick is dealing with a biceps injury presently, so the Seahawks will need to adjust their second-string offensive line plans. Ogbuehi re-signed with Seattle this offseason. Going into his seventh year, Ogbuehi is expected to be Brandon Shell‘s primary backup at right tackle.

The Seahawks added a tackle on the waiver wire Wednesday, bringing in ex-49ers blocker Dakoda Shepley. He joins Jamarco Jones and rookie Stone Forsythe as backup Hawks tackles. Though Shell and Duane Brown comprise Seattle’s optimal tackle duo, Brown remains out of the mix due to a hold-in effort. The Pro Bowler has not practiced since last season, putting the Seahawks in a tight spot as the season nears.

Seahawks To Re-Sign OL Cedric Ogbuehi

Cedric Ogbuehi is heading back to Seattle. The offensive tackle is re-signing with the Seahawks, reports Mike Garafolo of NFL Network (on Twitter).

When Ogbuehi joined the Seahawks last offseason, he was expected to play a backup role for the team. However, an injury to Brandon Shell led to Ogbuehi garnering his first starts since 2017. The 28-year-old ended up seeing time in eight games (four starts) for Seattle, appearing in 26-percent of his team’s offensive snaps.

The 2015 first-round pick out of Texas A&M spent his first four seasons with the Bengals, starting 25 of his 35 games. After having his fifth-year option declined, Ogbuehi only got into two games with Cincy in 2018, and he ended up moving on to the Jaguars for the 2019 campaign.

Quarterback Russell Wilson has been clamoring for reinforcement along the offensive line, and the Seahawks have somewhat been obliging. Bob Condotta of the The Seattle Times reports (via Twitter) that Ogbuehi is now the 12th offensive lineman under contract for next season.
