Lions Promote WR Geronimo Allison

The Lions have promoted Geronimo Allison from the practice squad to the active roster. The wide receiver will be eligible to play this week against the Rams with an opportunity to notch his first reception since 2019.

Allison showed promise with the Packers – particularly in the first quarter of 2018 when he recorded 19 catches for 289 yards and a touchdown. In 2o19, he was expected to take on a larger role, but the 6’3″, 202-pound target struggled in the slot. He finished out with 34 catches for just 287 yards and two scores, despite playing in all 16 games.

He hooked on with the Lions in 2020, a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum, but he opted out. That deal tolled into this year, when he missed Detroit’s final cut. Now that the Lions are without wide receiver Quintez Cephus, Allison will get a chance to show what he can do.

Lions Down To 53

The Lions have their 53-man roster in place. On Tuesday, the Lions officially cut:

Released

Waived

Placed on Reserve/Suspended

The Lions will carry three quarterbacks for now in Jard Goff, Tim Boyle, and David Blough. Boyle is currently dealing with an injured thumb, which will keep him sidelined for two months. But, in order to hang on to him and dress him ASAP, they’ll have to carry him on their initial 53-man roster. Fortunately, Goff has proven largely durable during his five-year career. He did not miss a start due to injury until late last season, when a thumb surgery sidelined him.

Lions To Cut WR Geronimo Allison

Geronimo Allison‘s bid to return to action after a 2020 opt-out decision is on hold. The Lions informed the veteran wide receiver he did not make their 53-man roster Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

The former Packers wideout will follow fellow veteran Breshad Perriman out the door in Detroit, which is going with Tyrell Williams and a host of young receivers. The Lions also acquired third-year wideout Trinity Benson from the Broncos on Tuesday morning.

An ex-UDFA, Allison served as a four-year Green Bay contributor. In 2019, he played in 16 games and made six starts. In four Green Bay slates, Allison totaled 89 catches for 1,045 yards and six touchdowns. The Lions signed him in March 2020 but will cut ties nearly 18 months later without the 27-year-old veteran having played in a regular-season game.

Detroit has revamped its receiving corps considerably this offseason, to go along with its Matthew Stafford-for-Jared Goff swap. Goff’s weaponry will enter the season as one of the league’s lowest-profile receiving groups.

Lions Geronimo Allison Opts Out

Lions wide receiver Geronimo Allison is opting out of the 2020 season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). As shown in PFR’s tracker, Allison is the second Lions player to exercise his right to skip the season, following defensive tackle John Atkins

Allison joined the Lions in March on a one-year deal for the veteran minimum. He showed promise with the Packers – particularly in the first quarter of 2018 when he recorded 19 catches for 289 yards and a touchdown. Last year, he was expected to take on a larger role. Instead, the 6’3″, 202-pound target struggled in the slot. He finished out with 34 catches for just 287 yards and two scores, despite playing in all 16 games.

With the Lions, he was expected to support Danny Amendola, Kenny Golladay, and Marvin Jones. Now, the Lions will need some outside help, especially since Golladay is on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Placement on the list does not necessarily mean that Golladay tested positive for the coronavirus, but he may have come into contact someone who has tested positive. Either way, he won’t be able to return until he clears the league’s testing protocol.

The full rundown of the league’s 30+ opt out players can be found on PFR’s 2020 NFL Opt Out Tracker.

Lions Sign WR Geronimo Allison

The Lions have agreed to a one-year deal with former Packers wide receiver Geronimo Allison, the team announced. As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets, it will be a one-year, veteran minimum deal of $910K with a $137.5K signing bonus.

That is a far cry from what Allison was probably anticipating this time last year, as he entered the 2019 campaign in line for an expanded role in Green Bay’s receiving corps. He opened 2018 with a bang, catching 19 passes for 289 yards and a score through the first quarter of the year, but a concussion and a core muscle injury limited him to just one game the rest of the way.

Still, the Packers thought enough of his potential — and Allison was generating enough interest from other teams — that the club signed him to a one-year deal last March after initially placing an original-round RFA tender on him. But Green Bay tried to use the 6-3, 202-pounder in the slot in 2019, and that simply didn’t work. He appeared in all 16 games but caught just 34 passes for 287 yards and two TDs.

The division-rival Lions have seen a good deal of Allison over his first four years in the league and apparently like his potential. The top of Detroit’s depth chart is set with Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones on the boundaries and Danny Amendola in the slot, but Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com says Allison will likely push Marvin Hall for the No. 4 WR job.

Of course, the Lions could also draft a wideout from a very deep WR class. But Allison is a good low-risk, high-reward addition who became yet another victim of a very tough FA market for receivers.

Injury Notes: Lindsay, Packers, DeCastro

An illness that has been going through the Green Bay locker room has claimed another victim. The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman tweets that Packers punter JK Scott is now questionable for tomorrow’s NFC Championship Game. Fortunately, the team has an open roster spot, so they won’t have to cut anybody to add some reinforcement.

Scott had a solid season for the Packers, averaging 44 yards on his 77 punts. He landed 29 punts inside the 20 yard line, earning him a spot on Pro Football Reference’s NFL All-Pro Second Team

Wide receiver Geronimo Allison was listed on the injury report with an illness this week, but he was a full participant at Friday’s practice.

Let’s check out some more injury notes from around the league…

  • Steelers guard David DeCastro underwent an ankle procedure this week, according to Yahoo’s Charles Robinson (via Twitter). The surgery provides an explanation for why the offensive lineman dropped out of the Pro Bowl. Robinson notes that the operation went well, and DeCastro isn’t expected to “miss extended time in the offseason program.”
  • Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay underwent a “simple, clean-up arthroscopic procedure” on his right wrist, according to Mike Klis of 9News in Denver. The team’s top rusher should be recovered by offseason team workouts in April. Lindsay actually suffered the wrist injury during the 2018 season, and he dealt with the ailment throughout the 2019 campaign. Despite the discomfort, the running back still managed to finished with his second-straight 1,000-yard season.
  • Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill underwent successful surgery to repair a torn ACL in his knee, tweets NFL Network’s James Palmer. The rookie second-rounder started all 16 games for Kansas City, compiling 58 tackles, five passes defended, and three interceptions. He suffered the injury during his team’s Week 17 game against the Chargers, sidelining him for the entire postseason.
  • Raiders cornerback Isaiah Johnson had back surgery this week, tweets Vic Tafur of The Athletic. The fourth-round rookie was placed on injured reserve to start the year, and he was ultimately activated in November. Johnson proceeded to appear in five games for Oakland, collecting two tackles and one pass defended.

Packers Sign WR Geronimo Allison To New One-Year Deal

Packers wideout Geronimo Allison drew enough interest as a restricted free agent that Green Bay has decided to sign him to a new one-year deal, tweets Jason La Canfora of CBSports.com.

Whereas Allison’s RFA tender wouldn’t have come with any financial guarantees, Allison’s new contact will contained guaranteed money, per La Canfora. Additionally, it will have a greater base value than the $2.025MM original round tender that Allison received earlier this week, and will contain incentives.

Allison, 25, managed 20 receptions in four games last season before being placed on injured reserve with hamstring and groin issues. Despite his limited track record, Allison could be in for an expanded role next year, playing as Green Bay’s No. 3 receiver behind Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Packers Tender WR Geronimo Allison

The Packers have tendered restricted free agent wide receiver Geronimo Allison at the original round level, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Twitter link). Allison will collect $2.025MM for the 2019 season.

Allison is a former undrafted free agent, so Green Bay won’t receive any compensation if he signs elsewhere. However, the Packers have secured the right of first refusal, meaning they’ll be able to match any offer sheet that Allison receives.

Despite his limited track record, Allison could be in for an expanded role next year, playing as Green Bay’s No. 3 receiver behind Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Additionally, the Packers have opted not to tender restricted free agent safety Kentrell Brice, tweets Ryan Wood of PackersNews.com, who notes Brice became obsolete after Green Bay signed fellow defensive back Adrian Amos.

Packers Place Geronimo Allison On IR

The Packers placed wide receiver Geronimo Allison on injured reserve, according to a team announcement. The club also released safety Jermaine Whitehead, who was ejected on Sunday night after slapping Patriots center David Andrews in the helmet. His spot will be filled by the promotion of cornerback Will Redmond from the practice squad.

Allison, 24, was held out of Sunday night’s game due to his ongoing hamstring and groin problems. He’ll undergo core surgery soon, which will rule him out for the remainder of the year. Ultimately, his season will end with 20 catches for 303 yards and two touchdowns across five games.

Redmond, a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2016, was signed to the Packers’ practice squad on Sept. 11. He spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve with a knee injury and missed the first eight games of 2017 with an ankle malady. The 24-year-old has yet to see live action, but he may soon get his chance with the Packers.

After losing to the Pats on Sunday, the Packers are 3-4-1, good for third in the NFC North. On Sunday, they’ll return home to take on the Dolphins.
