Dolphins Cut Jonas Gray, Add Mostert

The Dolphins announced a number of moves today (Twitter links), headlined by the release of running back Jonas Gray, who was a member of their taxi squad. Miami has also waived center Sam Brenner while re-signing center/guard Jacques McClendon. Meanwhile, the club has also signed running back/kick returner Raheem Mostert off of the Eagles’ taxi squad and on to their own 53-man roster, per agent Brett Tessler (on Twitter).

It was a quick trip through South Beach for Gray. The tailback was waived by the Patriots on September 5th and three days later, he found a home on the Dolphins’ practice squad. On Friday, he was promoted by the club to the 53-man roster. Days later, he’s in limbo once again. Gray emerged as a potential starter during his 201-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Colts during the 2014 season, but was leapfrogged on the Pats depth chart by LeGarrette Blount and others down the stretch.

The Eagles tried to trade Mostert to Dolphins and other clubs before he was initially waived by the team, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. Mostert, a UDFA out of Purdue, led the NFL in yards from the line of scrimmage in the preseason with 351 all-purpose yards.

In addition to the moves above, the Dolphins also confirmed the previously reported release of LaMike James and the 53-man roster addition of tight end Jake Stoneburner, who was previously on their practice squad.

Dolphins Promote Jonas Gray, Cut Logan Thomas

A pair of notable young players are involved in the Dolphins’ latest series of transactions, as the team prepares for its Week 1 contest in Washington. Agent Sean Stellato tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link) that Miami is promoting running back Jonas Gray to its 53-man roster from the practice squad. To make room for Gray, the club has waived quarterback Logan Thomas, tweets Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Gray’s release last weekend came as a surprise to many as he figured to be a part of the Patriots’ run game this season. He emerged as a potential starter during his 201-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Colts in the regular season, but was leapfrogged on the depth chart by LeGarrette Blount and others down the stretch. The Dolphins added Gray to their practice squad earlier this week, after he cleared waivers.

As for Thomas, the Dolphins claimed him off waivers from the Cardinals on Sunday, and it looked like the team would start the season with three quarterbacks on its roster. Instead, the Fins could look to add him to their practice squad, if he sneaks through waivers this time around.

According to Salguero (via Twitter), the Dolphins have also promoted offensive lineman Sam Brenner from their taxi squad, cutting guard Jacques McClendon to make room on the roster.

Today’s minor moves..

  • The Dolphins signed offensive lineman Jacques McClendon, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald (on Twitter). The Jaguars declined to extend an offer to the restricted free agent earlier this offseason. McClendon, 28 in December, played in 13 games for the Jags at center and right guard last season with three starts. Miami also added fellow offensive lineman Jeff Linkenbach earlier today.
  • Ravens defensive tackle Casey Walker signed his $510K exclusive-rights tender, according to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun (on Twitter). Baltimore signed Walker off of New England’s practice squad last year.

Exclusive rights free agent Ryan Davis signed a deal with the Jaguars today, according to the team’s Twitter account. The defensive end signed with the Jaguars in May 2012 after going undrafted. He played in one game as a rookie and seven games in 2013 before sticking on the roster last year for 16 games and recording 6.5 sacks. Today’s minor moves..

  • Quarterback Tajh Boyd has agreed to terms with the Steelers on a one-year deal, multiple league sources tell Rand Getlin of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). The Clemson product was drafted by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2014 draft.
  • The Broncos officially announced that they have tendered offers to three exclusive rights free agents: linebacker Brandon Marshall, tackle Paul Cornick, and guard Ben Garland, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
  • The Browns announced they re-signed exclusive rights free agents running back Shaun Draughn and punter Spencer Lanning, according to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal (via Twitter).
  • The Jaguars declined to tender offers to their five restricted free agents, Ryan O’Halloran of The Florida Times-Union writes. Fullback Will Ta’ufo’ou, cornerback Teddy Williams, tailback/kick returner Jordan Todman, guard Jacques McClendon, and tight end Fendi Onobun will now become unrestricted free agents.
  • The Lions gave defensive end George Johnson an original-round tender and wide receiver Jeremy Ross an exclusive rights tender, Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com writes.
  • The Chiefs have tendered ERFA Junior Hemingway, according to a source that spoke with Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter). Hemingway, 26, is a fourth-year pro who caught 12 passes for 108 yards in 14 games as a backup last season.
  • The 49ers have tendered exclusive-rights free agents Michael Wilhoite and Tony Jerod-Eddie, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com tweets.
  • As expected, the Cardinals declined to tender either one of their restricted free agents, Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic tweets. Both quarterback Ryan Lindley and nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu will hit the open market.

Jaguars Notes: Watson, Gerhart, Evans

There’s a chance that one of the Jaguars new additions, linebacker Dekoda Watson, could begin next week’s training camp on the team’s physically unable to perform list. According to Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union, the former seventh-round pick underwent hernia surgery in late June, but he is expected back for the start of the regular season.

The Jaguars inked the 26-year-old to a three-year deal in March. Watson spent his first four NFL season with the Buccaneers, where he compiled 106 tackles and three sacks. O’Halloran adds that second-year player LaRoy Reynolds took the first-team reps during minicamp and will likely do the same during training camp.

Let’s take a look at some more notes out of Jacksonville…

  • NFL.com’s Chris Wesseling believes Toby Gerhart could lead the NFL in carries next season, the reporter said on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast.
  • “Not participating in organized team activities and minicamp because of foot surgery certainly hurt” the chances for defensive back Josh Evans, says ESPN.com’s Michael DiRocco. If Evans can start to show consistency, DiRocco believes he could unseat Winston Guy.
  • DiRocco believes the team’s biggest position battle heading into training camp is between right guards Jacques McClendon and Brandon Linder. Considering the interior offensive line’s struggles in 2013, production from right guard will be key if the Jaguars hope to have a successful season.
  • The competition for the the team’s final two receiver spots should be interesting, DiRocco writes. Mike Brown and Kerry Taylor make DiRocco’s projected roster, but the writer warns that Tandon Doss, Allen Hurns and Chad Bumphis are also in play.
  • When looking at the team’s defensive backs, DiRocco thinks the Jaguars will have to choose between Jeremy Harris or Mike Harris for the final cornerback spot. At safety, the writer snubs Chris Prosinski.
