Latest On Packers’ Injured Players

Despite many of their top players not seeing much action this season, the Packers secured the NFC’s No. 1 seed for a second straight year. Green Bay’s injured players have additional time to prepare for the playoffs, thanks to the first-round bye, and some are rounding into form.

David Bakhtiari has not played since suffering an ACL tear during practice on New Year’s Eve 2020. However, the All-Pro left tackle practiced fully for the first time this season Friday. He is questionable for Sunday’s game in Detroit. Matt LaFleur said the ninth-year veteran blocker looked “really good” in practice this week, and although the third-year HC will not commit to playing him Sunday, a return for the Packers’ first playoff game should now be expected (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky).

Out since suffering a shoulder injury in Week 4, Jaire Alexander is ramping up after being activated from IR recently. LaFleur said the Pro Bowl cornerback will not play in Week 18. Alexander returned from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, and the lack of practice time this week led to LaFleur’s decision to keep him on ice another week. Signs point to Alexander returning for Green Bay’s first playoff game.

Center Josh Myers will return against the Lions, LaFleur said. The Packers officially activated Myers from IR, and he has no injury designation going into Sunday’s game. The second-round rookie has been out since suffering a knee injury on the first drive of the Packers’ Week 6 game.

Lucas Patrick has taken over at center and is in line to keep that first-string gig this week, but LaFleur is not ruling out Myers returning as a starter in the playoffs, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel tweets. A scenario in which both are in the team’s starting lineup will almost certainly be in play.

Although the team designated Randall Cobb for return last week, the veteran slot receiver will not come back against the Lions. This adds up, with Cobb’s core injury requiring several weeks’ worth of rehab. Cobb is tracking toward a playoff return, Demovsky tweets. Regarding Aaron Rodgers‘ status for the Detroit rematch, he will start. LaFleur did not necessarily plan to start the MVP favorite, indicating he does not believe Rodgers needs to play Sunday. But the QB prefers to start, Silverstein tweets.

Packers Sign OL Lucas Patrick To Extension

This morning, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced that the team has signed offensive lineman Lucas Patrick to an extension. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweets that it’s a two-year deal worth $3.6MM. The guard will receive a $350K signing bonus.

The lineman has come a long way since going undrafted out of Duke in 2016. Patrick spent his rookie campaign on Green Bay’s practice squad before becoming a rotational lineman in 2017. He re-signed with the team the following offseason, and he proceeded to appear in 14 games (two starts) in 2018.

Patrick has appeared in 13 games this season for the Packers. The 26-year-old has primarily served as a backup center and backup offensive guard.

The Packers front office has been busy this week. Yesterday, the team reworked Aaron Rodgers‘ contract, opening up more than $11MM in 2020 cap space.

Pending free agent Captain Munnerlyn would prefer to return to the Vikings, but he’s also prepared to move on if the right offer comes along, as he explained to SiriusXM NFL Radio earlier this week. “I’ve got to put myself in the position to try to get that Super Bowl trophy,” Munnerlyn said. “I’m an older guy. I’m going on year nine, so I definitely want to win. So I’m definitely going to look at the roster, the coaches, to see where I can take my talent and plug it in and try to help those guys get to the playoffs and make that Super Bowl run.” PFR recently ranked Munnerlyn, who plays exclusively in the slot, as the 12th-best cornerback on the free agent market.

Here’s more from the NFC:

  • Although the Packers want to re-sign offensive lineman J.C. Tretter, the club won’t “break the bank” in order to bring him back, according to Ryan Wood of PackersNews.com. Corey Linsley is expected to serve as Green Bay’s starting center in 2017, meaning Tretter would be stuck in a reserve role, though he could potentially start if T.J. Lang is not retained. Tretter played on nearly half the Packers’ snaps in 2016, grading as the No. 9 center in the league, per Pro Football Focus. Lucas Patrick, who spent the 2016 campaign on Green Bay’s practice squad, is a candidate to take over on the interior of the offensive line if both Tretter and Lang depart, writes Michael Cohen of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
  • Saints defensive tackle Nick Fairley is expected to test the free agent market, and he could get a better sense of his value at the scouting combine next week, as Nick Underhill of the Advocate details. Technically, agents aren’t allowed to talk numbers with rival executives until the legal tampering period begins on March 7, two days before the official opening of free agency. That rule isn’t usually observed, however, meaning Fairley — who could be looking for $10MM annually — and his representatives will get the chance to assess his market.
  • Free agent defensive lineman Calais Campbell could make sense as a target for the Redskins, opines John Keim of ESPN.com. Washington ranked 27th in adjusted line yards allowed in 2016, so Campbell — who excels at run defense — would make for a logical acquisition as the club seeks to remake its defense under new coordinator Greg Manusky. However, general manager Scot McCloughan has displayed an aversion to pursuing free agents over the age of 30, and I wrote that the Redskins should aim to get younger along their defensive line when assessing the team’s top offseason needs.
