Titans Place Jadeveon Clowney On IR

Jadeveon Clowney‘s bid at a long-term free agency deal did not go as expected this offseason, and his latest contract year has not unfolded especially well.

The Titans placed their big-ticket free agent pass rusher on IR Saturday. They had ruled Clowney out of Sunday’s game against the Ravens because of a knee injury, but he will now be out until at least Week 14.

Clowney missed Tennessee’s Week 8 tilt but returned to play in the team’s past two games. The former No. 1 overall pick, who signed a one-year deal worth $13MM in August, remains without a sack. He has not recorded a sack since November 2019, illustrating a Titans pass-rushing plan gone awry. The team cut free agency addition Vic Beasley earlier this month. Beasley joined Clowney in failing to register a sack as a Titan.

Although Clowney dealt with extensive knee trouble with the Texans — highlighted by microfracture surgery — he rebounded to make three Pro Bowls. But over the past two seasons, the well-rounded pass rusher’s stock has dropped thanks in large part to multiple injuries. Clowney considered meniscus surgery earlier this month but opted to return to Tennessee’s lineup. In light of Saturday’s news, it seems that operation has not been fully ruled out.

Clowney underwent surgery ahead of his 2018 season with Houston and missed time because of a core muscle injury with Seattle last year. However, this IR stay will result in Clowney entering Week 14 having missed at least five games. The 27-year-old defender has not been sidelined for that many contests since his 2014 rookie season. This will make Clowney’s pursuit of an elusive long-term deal more difficult.

The Titans promoted linebackers William Compton and Tuzar Skipper, along with cornerback Greg Mabin, and placed corner Kareem Orr on IR.

Titans Cut Will Compton

Will Compton‘s return to Tennessee didn’t last too long. The Titans have cut the veteran linebacker, Jim Wyatt of the team’s official site tweets.

Compton is somewhat of a fan favorite and co-hosts a popular podcast with (now former) teammate Taylor Lewan, but he hadn’t been contributing much on the field. Signed in late August, Compton played a big role on defense in Week 1 but has since been limited to special teams work. A full-time starter with Washington from 2015-16, Compton missed half of the 2017 season due to injury.

He then signed with Tennessee and played in 12 games in 2018, starting two. He appeared in nine games with the Raiders last year, starting four. He spent this whole offseason as a free agent and didn’t draw a ton of known interest. Now 31 and mostly a special teamer the past few years, he won’t have teams beating down his door now that he’s back on the market.

Titans Expected To Sign LB Will Compton

Will Compton is on track to return to the Titans. The veteran linebacker is expected to re-sign with the team he played for in 2018, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets.

The Titans brought in Compton for a workout earlier this week. He has spent the offseason as a free agent, following a nine-game stay with the Raiders last season.

Best known for his five-year run with Washington from 2013-17, Compton passed through Tennessee next. The Titans used him mostly as a depth player in 12 games during the 2018 season, following the sides’ one-year agreement. It should be expected the forthcoming Titans-Compton pact will also be a one-year agreement. Compton made two starts with the 2018 Titans and was a Raiders first-stringer four times last season.

Tennessee did not re-sign longtime starter Wesley Woodyard but returns Rashaan Evans and Jayon Brown. Compton, who will turn 31 in three weeks, would represent a proven veteran backup at this stage of his career.

South Rumors: Saints, Kelly, Titans, Jaguars

The Saints are currently without one of their starting offensive linemen. That may be the case for a bit. Andrus Peat suffered a broken thumb, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Recently re-signed to a lucrative deal, Peat is set to be out up to three weeks, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com notes. While the sixth-year guard could be ready for Week 1, the Saints have an experienced interior-line swing man ready to fill in. Former Vikings starter Nick Easton is now working in Peat’s place at left guard. Easton replaced an injured Peat as a starter in six games last season.

Here is the latest from the South divisions:

  • Alvin Kamara and the Saints began extension talks last week, but the sides may be far apart on terms. A deal is not particularly close at this juncture, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.football tweets. Kamara is going into the final year of his third-round rookie contract. The three-time Pro Bowler will make just $2.13MM this season. Kamara joins Dalvin Cook, Aaron Jones and Joe Mixon among 2017 running back draftees in negotiations. This group will battle a few hurdles — short running back primes, the position’s low value, poor returns on a few recent high-end running back deals and a likely 2021 cap reduction — as they attempt to secure long-term deals.
  • Jameis Winston has hired a new agent. The new Saints QB2 has selected Reggie Johnson of Stellar Group to represent him, Greg Auman of The Athletic tweets. Johnson will be Winston’s third agent since 2018. The former Buccaneers starter may be a long-term option for the Saints, but unlike Drew Brees and Taysom Hill, Winston is signed only through 2020. He could also be set to test the market again next year.
  • Ryan Kelly said in May he and the Colts were discussing an extension. With a contract season looming, the Pro Bowl center insists he would like to stay in Indianapolis long-term, Joel Erickson of the Indianapolis Star notes. Given Kelly’s age (27) and importance to a Colts O-line that ranks as one of the NFL’s best, he is in line to become the NFL’s highest-paid center — perhaps by a notable margin. Rodney Hudson‘s second Raiders deal currently resides atop the center list, at $11.25MM per year. This AAV figure sits more than $3MM below the top guard salary and nearly $11MM south of the leading tackle contract.
  • The Titans worked out one of their former linebackers Monday. Will Compton auditioned for the team, Field Yates of ESPN.com tweets. Compton, 30, played 12 games for the 2018 Titans, starting two. He last played for the Raiders, suiting up for nine Oakland contests in 2019.
  • An assault case against Jaguars fullback Bruce Miller has been dismissed, according to Miller’s attorney (via Matt Barrows of The Athletic, on Twitter). Miller, 33, has not played since 2015. After allegedly assaulting a man and his son in 2016 in San Francisco, Miller was charged with aggravated assault and elder abuse.

Raiders To Sign Will Compton

The Raiders are set to sign linebacker Will Compton, according to Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area (on Twitter). They’ll also add offensive lineman/center Erik Magnuson from the Bills’ practice squad to round out their roster. 

Unfortunately for Compton and Magnuson, their Oakland arrivals are overshadowed by the addition of linebacker Brandon Marshall, who rejoined the squad earlier on Tuesday. Still, both players will provide the Raiders with veteran experience on either side of the ball.

The Raiders didn’t get the big fish they wanted on Tuesday but, then again, that was the story for just about every team in the NFL. Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson remained in New York and the Raiders, at 3-4, will have to work with what they have, more or less.

Compton & Co. – as they’re now known – will face the Lions on Sunday.

Saints To Sign LB Will Compton

The Saints have agreed to sign free agent linebacker Will Compton (Twitter link via John Keim of ESPN.com). Terms of the deal are not yet known.

Compton played for the Redskins from 2013-17 and was a full-time starter as recently as 2016. However, his 2017 was marred by injury and he played only 79 defensive snaps for the Titans last year in his first and only season in Tennessee.

With the Saints, he may be able to provide depth, experience, and special teams help. However, he has limited time to make his case before 53-man roster cuts in early September.

NFC Notes: Cowboys, Compton, Fales

When announcing the new extension for linebacker Jaylon Smith at a press conference today, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sent a clear message to a few other high-profile players who are eligible for extensions. Jones said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic, “[t]he team takes precedent at a point over the opinion or the demand of the individual. The team takes precedent. This was a team move we are talking about today. The team takes precedent. And I’ve got the backbone to keep it that way” (Twitter link).

Obviously, that statement suggests that Jones is going to hold firm on the offers that have been extended to Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, and Amari Cooper, and as we detailed earlier today, Smith’s extension looks relatively team-friendly. Jones did say that there is “enough pie left” to get deals done with all of them, though he did not have an update on negotiations with the trio.

  • Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press examines the Lions‘ backup QB situation, noting that presumptive QB2 Tom Savage missed his seventh straight practice on Tuesday (Savage is in the concussion protocol). That has meant more reps for David Fales and Josh Johnson, but Birkett says the Lions are unlikely to carry three QBs. So if Savage cannot be medically cleared by next Saturday, he could be cut. Fales looked sharp in the team’s last preseason game while Johnson struggled, so Fales may have a leg up if Savage can’t get healthy.
  • The 49ers fear that rookie wide receiver Shawn Poindexter suffered a torn ACL in Monday’s preseason win, as Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area writes. Poindexter, a UDFA from Arizona, appeared to be a prime practice squad candidate, and the club has already signed WR/KR Chris Thompson to take Poindexter’s place on the 90-man roster.
