Another day, another update on Julio Jones. This time, we’re learning more about what Jones is seeking from a potential suitor. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports (via Twitter) that while the wideout naturally wants to play with a contender, he also wants to play with a “big-armed QB that can deliver the deep ball.”
Jones has established himself as one of the most prolific deep threats in recent history, finishing with more than 1,300 receiving yards for six-straight seasons between 2014 and 2019. The wideout was limited to only nine games and 771 receiving yards in 2020, but his yards per reception were still on par with his career marks.
We learned this past week that the Ravens and Rams are probably out of the Jones sweepstakes, leaving the Seahawks, Titans, Patriots, and 49ers among the (reported) remaining suitors. Would the likes of Russell Wilson, Ryan Tannehill, Cam Newton/Mac Jones, and/or Trey Lance/Jimmy Garoppolo qualify as “big-armed” QBs? It’s definitely hard to make an argument for some of those guys.
One of the Falcons’ main reasons for considering a Jones trade is because of the wideout’s hefty salary (paired with the team’s current cap issues). The team still hasn’t inked any of their rookies (including fourth-overall pick Kyle Pitts) to contracts, but Fowler tweets that several of the agents of these rookies are aware that the team is in a bit of a holding pattern. The team is currently sitting with only $446K in cap space.
Jones has lost some of his downfield speed, thus it doesn’t matter how strong the QB’s arm is, as he won’t be seeing any deep throws.

It’s not a false narrative if it’s been reported. Most of his guaranteed money is gone, if not all of it. He’s playing on incentives which is why he wants a new deal. And Atlanta certainly can’t give it to him.

Jones is not saying that Ryan cannot throw deep. He is saying that he wants his new QB to do so as well. But Jones also knows that he will not by default get his choice of where to go with his salary being what it is. He’s just going to have to wait until Atlanta agrees to an offer.
Well stated. Ryan can still throw plenty deep enough and accurate enough .. when he gets time. Problem is, the Falcons O-Line has been in the bottom half of the league for most of the last ten years. The only year I remember then ranking in the top half was the last year they had a bunch of aging vets before they had to retool with youth to save cap space .. AKA – the year they lost to the Pats in the Super Bowl.
So Julio, get down the field more quickly, and take a pay cut to bring in some NFL starting caliber OL .. then maybe you will get those deep balls. There is a big reason they are rare in the NFL these days.
I get so tired of the excuses from falcons fans…Russell Wilson’s line was atrocious last year and he still got the ball down field. Falcons fans love to make excuses, like JJ being double covered is why he had a down year…every good receiver gets double covered! Every good quarterback deals with pressure! They just aren’t good enough. Period. Time to move on from both those guys.
He played 9 games, so that would be the only reason he had a down year, averaged the same as he always has, Atlanta just doesn’t have enough talent anymore and their defense is so unbelievably horrible they let Nick Foles throw 3 fourth quarter touchdowns to beat them…Nick Foles is not better than you at quarterback
Good for Wilson, but his receivers also had 4.3 speed. That does help with go routes a good bit.

It should’ve happened in Atlanta! No way WFT or the Pats wouldn’t have jumped at the chance to get Matt Ryan. The falcons are trying to walk the line and be competitive and rebuild and it’s just not going to work. They don’t draft well enough.

I’m wondering if this has any reference with Chase Claypool saying he would welcome him in Pittsburgh, and Ben is Notoriously good at throwing the deep ball. However, they don’t have Cap by any means, not to mention he wants a new contract. Just FYI they have lead leading space in 2021 offseason, or they’re stacked at WR (not that including Johnson/Washington) cold brew in the mix, or last but not least it is not typical Steeler fashion to make such a high profile move, more so at a Postion they’re already stacked at. But would be fun would JuJu,Julio,Claypool,Ebron and hopefully a good healthy a Ben
You know what’s really messed up? There is one big arm QB THAT Ben Levine AND EVERYONE of you majorly forgot. He is the Best QB in Arizona. Kyler Murray who can toss that pig skin as far as any QB in the league and also is accurate. So why wouldn’t Julio Jones not want a young accurate Murray who can throw da bomb. Murray is right now and in the Future one of the best Quarterbacks in the NFL!
