SEPTEMBER 8: No decision has been made yet regarding supplemental discipline for Carter at this point, Mark Maske of the Washington Post notes. He adds the league’s evaluation process is expected to conclude early this week, so clarity in the case case should emerge shortly.
SEPTEMBER 7: Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter did not play a single snap during his club’s win over the Cowboys in the NFL’s regular season opener on Thursday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Carter may also miss at least Philadelphia’s Week 2 matchup with the Chiefs, as the league could suspend the 2024 Pro Bowler.
Following an injury to Philadelphia fullback Ben VanSumeren on the opening kickoff, Carter spit on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott while the two teams were waiting on the field during the ensuing injury delay (it later became clear that Prescott spit in the direction of Carter and the Eagles’ defense before Carter’s retaliation). Carter was promptly ejected, and a decision from the NFL as to whether the Georgia product will miss any additional games is expected on Monday.
He will at least receive a substantial fine, per Schefter, who says a speech given by NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent during the spring owner’s meetings could be instructive in this matter. In his speech, Vincent said sportsmanship posed one of the biggest threats to the NFL’s brand, and that there would be “zero tolerance for acts that demean the game.”
The Eagles survived the Cowboys contest and hung on for a 24-20 victory, but Carter’s absence was noticeable, particularly in the early stages of the game. The team would obviously love to have him on the field for the upcoming Super Bowl rematch.
Carter, the ninth overall pick of the 2023 draft, finished second to Texans defensive end Will Anderson in Defensive Player of the Year voting in his rookie season and earned Second Team All-Pro acclaim last year, in addition to his first Pro Bowl nod. He has compiled 10.5 sacks, 25 quarterback hits, and 20 tackles for loss over his first two years in the league.
“It was a mistake that happened on my side, and it just won’t happen again,” Carter said after the game. “I feel bad for my teammates and the fans out there. … It won’t happen again. I can make that promise.”
Technically, a suspension of any length would automatically void the remaining guarantees on Carter’s rookie contract, as Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports confirms. However, Jones says the club would not try to claw back any money, so the ascending player will likely earn every dollar due to him under his deal. He will be extension-eligible after the 2025 season.
Head coach Nick Sirianni did not indicate whether Carter would receive any internal discipline.

I think that would be incredibly stupid seeing as he missed effectively the whole game already.
A Philly fan sticking up for a terrible person. WOW haven’t seen that before.
I’m not a Philly fan, and I think the ejection was penalty enough. He missed pretty much the entirety of week one.
If you want more, we also need to look harder at what Dak said to him then, too. It wasn’t nothing. A guy doesn’t walk five yards to confront someone over nothing.
My opinion, you just let it go, as is.
I like the new “pretty much” one week suspension. Similar to the “close to 53” man roster size. New rules committee considering “it was basically in” field goals for next year.
It was close enough to a game, for me. Sorry, not sorry.
I’m just being fun. No issue with your opinion at all.
Prescott was in his own team’s huddle when Carter approached several yards on the wrong side of the ball. There wasn’t another Eagles player anywhere near him. Carter came over to cause a problem and Prescott stood up to him.
Carter wanted to start something and he did. It was a dumb move. An additional game will send the message that Carter and Nolan Smith (?) clearly didn’t get the first time.
Trash talking adds nothing to the game.
I have an extremely hard time believing Carter came over to the Dallas huddle, unprovoked, to start something. Dak said something to Carter. You could see Dak’s mouth moving. Carter, foolishly, took the bait and got ejected- which he deserved.
I see no reason not to leave it. If people want a harsher punishment though, it’s only fair we know what Dak said. If it crossed a line, then Dak shouldn’t just get away free.
What could you say to me that would justify me spitting on you?
So it had to become thing Dak said. Not the immaturity of a player who’s already part of a group that caused permanent human damage in college. The guy deserves maybe a 1 game suspension. Would not be upset if he didn’t get suspended. It’s not out of line though.
Maybe this player is just an immature A hole.
The Nolan Smith penalty was ridiculous.
You do realize Dak spat in the Eagles direction and said something before Carter approached.
Athletes are always spitting, in every sport. I’m not a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Bears fan here, but Prescott did spit toward the ground. Carter thought that was enough for him to spit a hocker directly at Prescott, hitting him in his upper chest. If the NFL is serious about cracking down on bad actors, the NFL should make Carter the example and suspend him for at least two more games, effectively making it a three day suspension. Football is a violent sport but it must be contained to football activity alone.
So how far into the game would you not consider it “pretty much the entirety” of the game? Suspensions shouldn’t change based on timing within a game.
Are you kidding 123 kid he’s a kid 123 kid . You must be kidding.
Jaylen Carter is 24 years old. He cannot be considered a kid in any culture on this planet.
Too many excuses being made for him. This is the same “kid” who fled the scene of an accident in college where one person was killed. He’s an irresponsible, entitled young man who will only learn from a meaningful suspension.
123 kid is that you
Agreed. Suspending him for another game in a 16 game season is like missing 15% of the season.
I’m not a fan of either team but I don’t think that punishment fits the crime. Yes, it was vile but Missing 2 games for spitting sounds excessive.
Carter was correctly disqualified for spitting AT an opposing player in full view of the umpire.
A fine by itself for a DQ is not sufficient. You get thrown out of a game, you have to sit out the next match. Just like in soccer where if you’re shown the red card you’re suspended for at least the next game.
You’re citing a rule that does not exist.
Then the NFL should make it the rule!
Carter didn’t spit at him he spat ON him. Dak spat at the Eagles before Carter confronted.
If Dak spat on him where is the Zapruder film verifying this? It would have been all over the Sports news. It would haven demanded that Dak be suspended. Not even Carter has said this. Making stuff up on the internet. What’s the works coming to.
I didn’t say Dak spat on him I said he spat towards the Eagles and said something which prompted Carter to confront. During the weather delay this was shown.

Here you go. Maybe do some research before spouting off.
Jalen spat at him ,dak just happened to be there.
17 game season
dougdeb Well Rashee Rice missed most of last season shouldn’t his suspension been served then? That’s what you’re saying!!!
Wasn’t Jalen Carter involved in a murder case before he got to the NFL. Money > human lives when it comes sports.
link to sportingnews.com
He’s the Draymond Green of the NFL.
It wasn’t a murder case.
street racing that lead to murders. Not a murder case a murder investigation. Better?
Not every death is a murder. No one was going to face murder charges in that case.
I’ll bet the families that lost someone consider it murder. And from a moral perspective it does feel like murder.
No it doesn’t. Reckless endangerment exists. Vehicular manslaughter exists. A bunch of people all doing the same stupid thing and only one of them dying from it happens.
Two people died…but who’s counting? There were only two people driving, not a bunch of people. I get it that it wasn’t premeditated, but put one of your relatives in there and let me know what you think.
Wanting someone to be punished for the grief you’re feeling isn’t the same as objective justice. He could have faced criminal charges, but murder would not have been fitting.
If it was my relative I’d be wondering why they were driving around intoxicated with another passenger street racing. I wouldn’t blame Carter one bit for for my relatives poor life choices.
It’s weird you’re trying to blame Carter for others choices in life.
If you rob someone, and shoot someone to death, those accompanying or assisting in the shooting, these people are also charged as if they shot the victim .
Street racing that led to unfortunate deaths*
Carter didn’t force the other driver to participate
Carter didn’t cause the other driver to lose control and crash
Carter didn’t make the other driver get intoxicated before street racing
Murder: the unlawful, intentional killing of one human being by another, characterized by malice or premeditation
The reason he wasn’t charged with murder is cause there was no malice or no pre plan intent to kill them.
I do understand why he wasn’t charged with murder. I’m just saying it kind of feels like it to me.
So if im driving drunk and crash into you and die should you be charged with attempted murder? Cause thats the argument you’re making.
That’s a bad comparison. If you crash into me drunk, that’s on you. Carter wasn’t just some bystander. He was the other half of the race. No Carter, no race. Nobody’s saying it legally fits “murder,” but when your reckless choices play a direct role in two people dying, don’t be shocked if the families see it that way.
Not a bad comparison at all.
You were also driving on the road with me much like Carter was driving on the road with them.
My poor actions led to an accident and I died crashing into your car that was in my way. If your car wasn’t in my way, much like you seem to think Carter not being there would have prevented this tragedy (it wouldnt have the person was driving drunk regardless of street race or no street race), id probaby still be alive (no id probably crash into something or someone else and die much like the other car most likely would have cause they were drunk).
By your logic since youre involved in my poor choices and i died cause you were involved you should be charged with attempted murder.
So either you agree you should be charged or you disagree which means your whole blame carter stance is based on feeling not logic or rational thought.
Carter didnt make them get behind the wheel
Carter didnt make them drive drunk
Carter didnt make them lose control of the vehicle
Carter didnt make them die
Their choices did
In some states, if you are doing something considered to be illegal, it’s considered homicide by vehicle.
Murder? You got to be kidding
I kinda feel like missing the whole first game and having something stupid you did replayed dozens of times in one of the most watched games of the season is pretty decent punishment.
I don’t think that Dak was trying to spit on Carter, but I could see how Carter could take that poorly. It does not justify his response, of course, but the initial capture looked worse without the accompanying circumstances alongside it. If Carter gets suspended, it will probably be in large part for acting in violation of the NFL’s warning (good sportsmanship is of course a good development for the sport).
Dak should get some kind of small fine simply for principle if there really is a zero tolerance. Spitting toward a group of people on purpose is somewhere between baiting and taunting, if not simply unsportsmanlike by itself. Yes that’s on Carter if he’s dumb enough to get baited, but if you really want none of this on any level then you hit the baiting one too. It’s about Vincent’s little speech and if they really mean absolute zero with any of this stuff.
Eagles play the Chiefs next week so the NFL will probably suspend him for that game. 😏
Carter straight up spit on Dak…
Dak if anything spit Toward Carter but not even close to what Carter did…
Carters was intentional no doubt…
Give him a game or two and let’s move on…
Get back to talking Football Boys!!!
If you don’t think Dak did that intentionally your a fool.
The Fool is Carter and urself…
Even if Dak did it intentionally he spit on the ground as Carter was moving backwards with ZERO intent to hit him with the spit…
FOOL!!!
He should be suspended. And Dak should be too.
Love how yes Carter spit on him, Dak help yo instigate and gets let off the hook. I agree his ejection was needed for a vile act this was not a singular unprovoked act. Dak should be fined as well . But either way next time Dallas and Philly meet dak will see Carter so best of luck to ya dak lol
Dak baited a fool who had ventured towards his team’s huddle. He should not be punished because said fool took the bait.
If you’re making a statement on unsportsmanlike behavior whether baited or not Dak clearly spit at him too, he just didn’t spit on him. I don’t know many people who’s feet get spit on that walk away from that let alone a pro football player
Incredibly a Florida Gator spat on a guy yesterday, smh
Even as a Cowboy fan, a suspension makes no sense? The league has far more issues with players than this.
Soft. Dak spat at him also! So soft!
Goodell and the owners wouldn’t care a lick about spitting if it resulted in a company like Kleenex signing on as a league sponsor 🙂
Shouldn’t Prescott get suspended as well since he spit first? But wait he’s a super star so the NFL will treat him differently 🤔 both players need disciplined under the NFL policy in place …..
I don’t have any issue with him being suspended a game (while missing the entire game against Dallas as well). This would likely be an argument for the Eagles to make for an appeal.
Carter’s reaction to the incident is what I expected. Childish, immature. “I made a mistake. I let down me teammates and the fans”…blah blah.
He was acting like fake tough guy and wanted to Dak to know he was “a man”.
Tons of talent. And peanut for a brain. I hope this is the last time he does this.
This is easily resolved by the NFL. He missed the entire game and any like occurrence by anyone else the punishment should be the same. If a player get ejected for the second time in a season, then 3 games suspension and any subsequent playoff games.
I’m not a fan of either team, but on the replay you can clearly see Dak spit first, then after the lightning delay Dak is seen walking up to Carter, who is in street clothes, and spit at his feet.
Why no talk of that? Why no suspension talk for Dak?
Rocky, I think you got your facts wrong. Everything happened in and around the Cowboys huddle at the start of the game.
You mean that spit Dak did on the ground by his own huddle when Carter was 5 yards away?
Then after Carter walked up to Carter and spit on Dak?
That spit that Dak landed on the ground just outside his own huddle? That one?
Heck, I was just questioning Rock Hauler’s contention that Prescott spit twice in Carter’s direction including once when he was in street clothes (?). I saw no such reporting.
If Carter does this on a noon game against the Panther’s he probably gets fined and end of the story. Have to believe doing this on national TV, 1st game of the year with so many eyes watching the NFL is going to want to make an example of him.
Okay, I’m a Cowboy fan and can’t stand the Eagles, but any more than him missing a whole game would be ridiculous. I was just expecting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Yes he should!
He should be fined 1/18 of his salary. That’s a pretty good hit.
Suspend him
Just announced , no suspension $57k+ fine. Move forward.
Whether it’s provoked or not spitting on someone is one of the nastiest, despicable, disrespectful acts a person can do to another. The NFL punishing him with a 1 game suspension & forfeit pay for that game is an insult to Dak Prescott and the values of good sportsmanship. The NFL is sending out a message that money rules and any mean, disrespectful, despicable act is not really a big deal. FYI: In some states spitting on someone is legally considered battery and can be charged as assault.
