In the wake of their Week 6 game, the Giants have been the subject of an investigation over their handling of the league’s concussion protocol. That process has now concluded with discipline being handed down.
The organization has been fined $200K, per a joint NFL-NFLPA announcement. In addition, head coach Brian Daboll has been issued a $100K fine. Running back Cam Skattebo has also received a financial penalty; the fourth-round rookie has been fined $15K.
During the Giants’ Thursday night contest against the Eagles, quarterback Jaxson Dart was taken to the medical tent to be evaluated for a potential concussion. Daboll and Skattebo entered the tent to check on Dart, with Daboll also engaging in a heated discussion with the team’s medical staff. In the immediate aftermath of the game, it was widely believed discipline of some kind would be forthcoming. Today’s news thus comes as little surprise.
“While the parties agreed that Coach Daboll’s and Mr. Skattebo’s actions had no actual impact on the exam or the care that Mr. Dart received, their conduct was inconsistent with and demonstrated a disregard for the concussion protocol’s requirements and therefore constituted a violation,” the announcement reads in part.
Dart was able to return to the game and then played every snap last week against the Broncos. He is in line to remain the Giants’ starter moving forward barring any missed time due to injury. Both Daboll and Skattebo issued apologies for their actions following the incident, and the announcement notes “immediate remedial steps” have been taken to ensure a repeat of this situation will not take place moving forward.
They need to take some draft picks
Daboll should have been fined and suspended. But fining a rookie who was checking on his bud or offering him well wishes? Stupid.
He was violating clear rules. Just because Cam is dumber than a bag of rocks, as attested to by his teammates, doesn’t mean he gets a free pass.
Dumb as a bag of rocks. – – yet got a 1220 on his SAT. Just think what he would have scored if he wasn’t so dumb. Remind me – – what was your score? Although I do agree with your no free pass for violating rules
He violated clear cut rules. His rookie status has no bearing on that.
I agree, Daboll absolutely should have been suspended, too.
It’s a slippery slope with Skattebo. I also think he was probably just concerned about Dart and wanted to check on him, which doesn’t deserve a fine, but it’s a slippery slope. The rule is there for a reason. When you start trying to judge intent, you open a box that’s hard to close.
I think Skattebo and his $1.07m signing bonus and $840k rookie salary will be fine.
Heh..fine..I made a funny.
Edit: but I agree with others, Daboll is desperate to keep his job and doesn’t care if his players get hurt. A suspension was justified and he got away with it.
“Never Remember” is one of the worst commenters on TradeRumors, bar none.
He’s a troll. I almost never mute people but he’s earned it.
So skirting the concussion rules brings less of a penalty than yelling at a referee after a game and hurting his feelings.
Pretty said that Daboll was more concerned about his job than the long term well being of young man. Should be fired.
Mr. Mara..
Write the check to cover the fines from Petty Cash..
And..
Let’s move on..
Damn that’s a grown man’s salary
Being able to fine someone whose actions have “no impact” basically gives Goodell and his minions free license to rob players and coaches at will. This is even more absurd than when Goodell fined Frank Gore for wearing his socks too low in a playoff game.
I don’t like the fine to Skattebo, but I get it. Teammates can disguise a “come on man, get back on the field” visit as a simple checkup pretty easily. I’m not saying that’s what Skattebo was doing, but it could be done. Besides, the doctor needs to be able to conduct his/her tests without interruptions. Still, doesn’t feel good to see a rookie get a $15,000 fine.
I’m actually surprised that Daboll only received a fine. That seemed like something the NFL would want to make an example of.
The message Goodell seems to be sending is “We don’t care about the players health and we don’t want coaches or teammates caring either”. If the league is so concerned about test interruptions why aren’t these tests being conducted in a locker room area away from the field?
The NFL has mastered the art of missing opportunities to “make an example of” situations. They simply don’t care and act with autonomy.
Why absorb? Rules in place. I get the concern issue but rules are there so medical staff can perform job.
