In the wake of the Jets’ latest loss and their highly ineffective performance on offense, head coach Aaron Glenn was asked about the possibility of a quarterback change. Justin Fields remains atop the depth chart for now, but there is not a consensus in the organization that is the right move.
SNY’s Connor Hughes reports “several” people within the locker room have expressed a position that Tyrod Taylor would be a better option at the quarterback spot than Fields. This sentiment dates back to training camp, per Hughes. No competition for the QB1 spot took place during the summer, with Fields landing the QB1 gig upon signing a two-year free agent deal.
That $40MM pact contains $30MM fully guaranteed. Considering that level of commitment, it comes as little surprise Fields has received a vote of confidence on more than one occasion despite New York’s 0-6 start. When speaking to the media on Monday, Glenn said (via ESPN’s Rich Cimini) he did not give thought to replacing Fields with Taylor during the team’s loss to the Broncos yesterday. Doing so could have helped create a quarterback controversy, something Glenn seeks to avoid.
Moving forward, it will be interesting to monitor how the Jets’ quarterback setup is handled. A continuation of the team’s losing streak – especially if Fields is unable to bounce back from his 45-yard, nine-sack showing on Sunday – will no doubt lead to an increase in calls for Taylor to take over. Pressure on that front could come from within the organization given the contingent which would have preferred Taylor begin the year atop the depth chart.
Fields, 26, offers upside with his rushing ability and has posted 204 yards and three touchdowns on the ground so far in his debut Jets campaign. The former first-rounder has also set new personal bests in a number of passing categories, albeit in a way which has not lent itself to much in the way of overall production on offense. New York ranks last in the NFL with an average of 175 passing yards per game, and the team sits 25th in scoring.
While Fields is under contract through 2026, Taylor is a pending free agent. The 36-year-old has made just one start so far in his Jets career (filling in for an injured Fields in Week 3), which dates back to last season. If at least some in the organization had their way, though, that figure would increase.
Justin Fields is so bad…
How bad is he??
2003 Jessica Alba
Well thats a good bad lol
*starts writing answer on dry erase board a la *Match Game” panel*
HOW BAD IS HE??? *’70s guitar wank*
I know Richard Dawson was everyone’s favorite but I loved Brett and Charles, and Gene was such a great host!
Cue Ed McMahon.
When she sits around the house she sits around the house
Nobody in Pro Sports has more support than Justin Fields backup.
Granted, it was against a very tough Broncos defense, but yesterday was rough. It would be easier for Fields if they had a single receiver other than Wilson that defenses had to worry about, but his decision making and holding the ball are rough, and he’s making what’s actually a pretty decent offensive line look worse than it is.
Even when he gets WRs open hes late, throws behind, or simply doesnt see it. Not having a great WR hurts, but Fields is bad no matter the team
They need to make phone calls for Shaheed or Jakob’s Meyers. Maybe even Legette
The only winless team in the NFL should not be trading draft capital for a veteran rental.
The most mind boggling thing with Fields, is why he stays in the pocket when it collapses. He’s extremely athletic and fast. Get out of the pocket and make a play! Maybe watch some early Russ Wilson tape?
His internal clock is bad, i dont think he realizes just how long hes been standing there so his pocket awareness also takes a hit.
The Jets thing to do would be to trade for Geno Smith or ask Mark Sanchez to come in for a workout 🙂
Fun fact: Mark Sanchez had more net passing yards this week than Justin Fields (0 to -10).
That’s… technically correct, Technically Correct.
The best kind of correct.
Hahahhaha
Plus a much higher catch rating when it comes to charges.
Remember they wanted to pair this QB with Marvin Harrison Jr with the “Haul”… Instead of CW and Odunze
Nothing breeds good team chemistry like divided support for different QBs in the locker room. Juuust beautiful.
Has anyone heard what the grandkids have to say about this? Are they dropping Fields Madden rating?
Brick is still figuring it out with his brothers Cinder and Mortar.
Hiding, in the shadows, waiting for a game ball to steal
Fields remaining the starter is better for the tank. Taylor might be able to win a couple games for them. With Fields the Jets are capable of losing every game
Not just Fields. That entire coaching staff is incompetent. Glenn has no business being an HC.
I’m not letting the coaching staff off the hook. I’m saying that Fields is so bad that the Jets should be considered definitive underdogs against anyone. Taylor might be able to pull out a couple wins, including yesterday’s game
Early lines from Vegas have the Jets favored at home vs. Carolina. Maybe the sharps think Taylor will be named QB1 once the Jets return from England.
That has to be the only explanation. If Fields is starting I’d hammer the Panthers
Jets D kept them in that game until the very end. Tyrod may be the boost the team needs to lift morale. I’ll bet the players can’t support Fields in the locker room anymore.
Well we knew Fields was bad. He can look great out there at rare times, but yesterday was no shocker. I wouldn’t be mad at him for playing like we all knew he is. Nevermind the fanboys that always blamed the OL, HC, OC, weather, ghost of Papa Bear Halas or Chinese people for Fields bad play. He just never evolved into an NFL QB. Can’t process a play in 2.5 seconds and hasn’t figured out when to scramble or throw the ball away. Since he hasn’t done that by now, 3 teams and 5 years later, he never will.
The team could get that pick, but you have to think that the losing and hopelessness is only going to hurt a team already adrift after not having much success for a long time. For all of the attitude that this year was going to be a return to business, the team has gotten much worse. As some of our Jets fan friends here have said, it would be tolerable if there was some sort of improvement, but things seem bleaker now than they did last year, despite the dysfunction then. The culture really does matter, and having another bad-not just bad, but hopeless-season with Fields starting every game (provided he doesn’t improve) is going to dig yet a deeper hole from which to navigate.
Even with a first overall pick, establishing a culture is no guarantee, as Tennessee can show us. The Jets will need to be careful to not make that hole too deep for their franchise savior to climb out of, if they do end up finding the right guy with that pick to begin with. It’s still early, though. There could be some improvement ahead.
I was surprised to see Glenn get so many looks for HC jobs last off season. Why? What was so dynamic about him that he should get consideration? Other than he’s been in the league for awhile, what made him special? His defenses were ok, but that’s about it. On the flip side, you can’t really predict which coordinators will make good HCs until they’re in the position. No one knew who Andy Reid was when he got HC. So for the Jets, having decades of bad teams means their reset should be building a culture. Hire someone you think will be there for a while, who’s your guy. Like Denver, Chicago, and the Chargers did. It looked like hiring Glenn was just another merry go round of HCs hires there. That’s what I don’t like about owners like Johnson; coaches and players just come and go to them. They’re just employees. That rich guy philosophy of rule #1 is protect the bureaucracy, who cares about the product on the field. Fans will keep buying tickets and the value of my franchise will continue to go up.
As for a rookie HC in Glenn, you’d expect the D to be very good. He inherited a good D. He’s a DC. Their D sucked up to the Denver game. Only Dallas was worse. They finally showed up last week and played to their potential. At a minimum, you expect a rookie HC team to show up ready to play, minimizing penalties, executing the game plan. I haven’t seen any of that in the Jets. The end to the first half vs DEN was mind boggling. You saw it in the players faces. WTF were they doing? Even a WR confronted Glenn and yelled at him at the end of the half. No surprise there. That coaching staff was clueless. Glenn is coming across as a happy go lucky guy that backs his players, but doesn’t have a spine. If he loses that team we can point to that series before halftime last week as the reason why. These are grown competitive men that play a violent game to win.
Now feels like a good time to have had Jordan Travis…oh wait.
Fields is a RB playing QB – just like Anthony Richardson. Both need to be playing RB or TE if they want to stay in the NFL.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a QB only pass for 45 yards and be sacked almost 10 times EVER in my 25-30 year history of watching nfl football. It’s actually impressive
Not really … whats worse is Glenn letting the clock run down before halftime rather than trying to score. Lack of faith in Fields?
Worst of all, the Jets brain-faded big-time on 4th-and-8 from the Denver 44 inside the 2:00 warning. Jets could’ve lined up for a 62-yard field goal that would’ve won the game. They go for it, Fields is sacked for the 9th time, Broncos go to victory formation.
What was more bizarre was that you know your passing game sucks. Why not try to pop a draw or QB draw to make the FG shorter? Your passing game literally had no yards all day.
I’m not a gambling man, but I would wager that he has support outside the Jets’ building.
Remember when some Steeler fans were on here lamenting losing him for that ridiculous contract the Jets gave him?
Remember after week 1 when those bums on here were applauding fields and hating on Caleb?
Pepperridge Farm remembers
The Jets should change their name to the Tanks.
