With an uptick in in-person interviews set to take place over the coming days, plenty of movement could be imminent on the coaching front. The Steelers are among the eight teams in need of a head coach.
Pittsburgh has spoken with a number of candidates already, and that includes Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. A follow-up is now being arranged. Weaver is expected to interview in person with Miami this week, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
In addition to his first meeting with Pittsburgh, Weaver interviewed with the Cardinals, Falcons and Ravens as part of the initial round of their respective searches. The 45-year-old has never been a head coach at the college or NFL levels, but he did hold the title of associate head coach during the final two seasons of his three-year Ravens tenure. This will mark the first in-person interview for Weaver during the 2026 cycle.
A number of similarities existed with respect to each of the Steelers’ past three HC hires. Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin were each 30-something staffers with a defensive background and a lack of prior head coaching experience when they arrived in Pittsburgh. Replicating the success from all members of that trio is the goal as the Steelers move forward following Tomlin’s resignation. Weaver’s background is on the defensive side of the ball, and he has worked as a D-coordinator on two occasions (Texans in 2020, Dolphins in 2024-25).
Miami’s coaching staff is set to undergo a number of changes once Mike McDaniel‘s replacement is brought in. Weaver’s fate remains uncertain at this time, with the Steelers looking into other HC options as well this week. It will be interesting to see if he emerges as a finalist for the position or if Pittsburgh heads elsewhere in the process of hiring Tomlin’s successor.
Here is an updated look at where things stand for the Steelers:
- Ejiro Evero, defensive coordinator (Panthers): Interview requested
- Brian Flores, defensive coordinator (Vikings): To conduct in-person interview
- Marcus Freeman, head coach (Notre Dame): Rumored candidate; staying at Notre Dame
- Jeff Hafley, defensive coordinator (Packers): Interviewed 1/17
- Klay Kubiak, offensive coordinator (49ers): Interviewed 1/18
- Mike McCarthy, former head coach (Cowboys): To interview
- Jesse Minter, defensive coordinator (Chargers): Interviewed 1/17
- Nate Scheelhaase, pass game coordinator (Rams): Interviewed 1/16
- Chris Shula, defensive coordinator (Rams): Interviewed 1/16
- Anthony Weaver, defensive coordinator (Dolphins): Interviewed; second interview expected

Could this be the guy? He did a good job as defensive coordinator despite not much talent.
I was hoping Dallas would have brought him in for a interview for their defense coordinator opening
They haven’t had an offense since Roethlisberger was here and Haley was OC. It would be nice to see them come into the modern style of football at some point
IK agree, but I don’t think that the is means they should just exclude coaching candidates with a defensive background, including Weaver. If the coach is innovative enough and is comfortable with letting someone with some new ideas in offense to run his own offense, that might be OK.
You’re right, of course.
Considering theyre likely to draft a WR & QB this year , it’d be insane to not hire an offense HC like Klint
They seriously need to hire a offensive oriented coach. Then let thst coach hire a competent DC
This ^^^^^^^. Let’s move into the 21st century of the NFL.
I have very little faith in the Rooneys anymore
Art II is an embarrassment to his family
Easiest choice ever Klint Kubiak or Chris Shula.
Hiring ayone else is just overthinking it
I think that Rooney is obsessed by the idea this group is closer to being a real threat than it actually is. And consumed with winning a playoff game. That’s kind of problematic in dictating what kind of coach they’re going to hire, as you have to think that there are numerous candidates who likely would wish to tear the team down to its studs and get rid of a lot of old guys whose better years have passed
I agree with you here. Pittsburgh has no QB. Their options of finding one this year look beyond very slim. Who know’s what the season after this next one will bring in terms of finding one, but, even in most best case scenarios, you are most likely looking at a rookie QB, and how much can be expected in his first year? Their OL is awful, despite efforts thru the draft to improve it. They have only one decent WR, who has had his share of issues on and off the field. The defense finished 26th this season, despite it being BY FAR the highest paid unit in the NFL, and their 3 best players are 37(Heyward), and turning 32 in October(Ramsey and Watt). Rooney needs to wake up to reality. This has tear down written all over it.
They’ve traded up in the recent past to get a linebacker and offensive lineman. They’ve shown the willingness to do such things
They really need to get rid of a lot of aging, high price tag players to add a few more picks, clear some cap space and open up positions
I have the feeling a new younger coach would move in that direction
But as I said above, the owner here seems to be delusional
Dan and art Sr must be turning over in their graves seeing what little artie has done to one of the greatest organizations in sports. Hes delusional to think this team has a chance. They need a total commitment to youth. Starting with the defense. And bringing back old man Rodgers is a mistake thst will send the team back 5 years. They need a Shula or an offensive minded young coach who can develope a young qb. Tomlin couldn’t do that. It was borderline obscene what happened to Rudolph as a young qb. Big Ben didn’t help him. And Pickett was given a grade school OC. So his development was stymied.
