Once Mike Tomlin resigned as head coach of the Steelers, the possibility of widespread coaching changes emerged. Pittsburgh now has Mike McCarthy in place, and one of his first priorities will be filling the offensive coordinator position.
It was learned over the weekend that Arthur Smith has agreed to join Ohio State as the school’s new OC. That marks an end to his two-year tenure in Pittsburgh. Smith was connected to other NFL coordinator opportunities as well as some of the league’s head coaching vacancies. In any case, his departure did not come as a surprise and it created the need for a new Steelers OC.
A target on that front has now emerged. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Pittsburgh is expected to interview Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells this week. Wells has been in his current position since 2020, the year McCarthy arrived as Dallas’ head coach. The two worked together for five years on the Cowboys’ staff.
Wells began his NFL coaching career in 2012 with the Giants. The 47-year-old remained in New York for eight years before joining McCarthy in Dallas. Wells has a background as an offensive line coach, but his final two years with the Giants saw him coach the team’s tight ends. He has continued doing so throughout his Cowboys tenure, including the 2025 campaign after head coach Brian Schottenheimer retained him last winter. Wells interviewed with the Commanders for their OC gig earlier this month before Washington ultimately promoted David Blough to the position.
Wells has drawn praise for his role in developing the likes of Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson during his Cowboys tenure. He is currently occupied with preparations for tonight’s East-West Shrine Bowl, where he will coach the West team. After that commitment is finished, though, another OC interview will likely be arranged.

Patrick Graham rumored for DC. That’s certainly a choice to take on the Raider defensive coordinator. Like I’ve said, Steeler fans are about to learn some hard lessons about where the real problems lie, and it wasn’t with Mike Tomlin.
The possibility of being bad or gosh, having a losing season, was always a possible outcome in the scenario he left/got fired. The two loudest parts of the bell curve are the ones who were fine with elite mediocrity and CAN’T WAIT for their “I told you so parade” and the ones who did not have the foresight to recognize we could be a bad team for a period of time. If she dies, she dies, but gee whiz we had to break the wheel of perpetually similar outcomes (that always fell short of anything but a playoff blowout recently) and any fan that lacks the fortitude for whatever happens next can kick rocks.
First of all, I’m not a fan. I’m just telling you your franchise is the Bengals with better promo. That’s not a told you so moment. It’s the truth.
The Bengals have like 2 playoff appearances in the past 50 years
Okay. Silly take.
Once a model franchise, now mediocre football at best. Thanks Art II
Lunda Wells is a very good position coach. Coached te’s and the offensive line. Good communicator, teacher and players love him. He was with MM for all his tenure in Dallas. Whomever gets this job will not call plays and thats a shame..MM play-calling days are well behind him.
I like the idea that McCarthy will hopefully bring in guys who aren’t solely yes-men but rather, competent in the idea of building a better all-around team. I like the idea of fresh viewpoints and approaches rather than one that entails just working to further the one strategy of the guy in charge
This absolutely seems like a yes-man who won’t even be calling plays
That said, im intruiged by MM and want to see how he runs the this broken offense
That he believes there is a “good team” in place here sure gives you that impression. I have to believe that played well with Art whereas a new, young coach would seek to burn it all down. Guess we shall see
They have good roster (Assuming ARodg comes back), just some glaring holes that need addressed
“Good” is a relative term. They’re in the mushy middle. They have an aging defense with some huge salaries. You’re right, they have some glaring holes
I guess my problem with Art is the idea that he believes they are close to competing for the Super Bowl. That’s hard to see
They were just poorly schemed on both sides of the ball
The pass rush is insane and Harmon made a dramatic difference in stopping the run.
Secondary needs a piece or 2.
Obviously need a young go-to receiver, but other than that i think MM has a lot to work with.
I hate to be brash, but they had an incompetent coaching staff
