The Jets missed out on their biggest free-agent target in quarterback Kirk Cousins, who signed with the Vikings. The team entered the offseason with an NFL-best $89.8MM in cap space and could have $90MM in cap space for next offseason, with the possibility of that number moving closer to $100MM.
The 2019 free-agent class is loaded, with the likes of Todd Gurley, Le’Veon Bell, Odell Beckham, Jadeveon Clowney, Aaron Donald, Khalil Mack and Demarcus Lawrence all possibly becoming free agents. If they’re unable to solve their quarterback dilemma this season, the Titans’ Marcus Mariota, the Buccaneers’ Jameis Winston and the Falcons’ Matt Ryan are also due to become free agents.
“The list is impressive,” said Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan to Calvin Watkins of Newsday. “What you tend to do is you go through and try and look at teams and who they anticipate they’re franchising and, of course, if they have that ability. A lot of things can happen between now and then.”
The Jets were still busy in free agency this offseason, signing quarterbacks Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, defensive back Trumaine Johnson, wide receiver Terrelle Pryor and linebacker Avery Williamson. They also have two key players due to reach free agency themselves next offseason in defensive tackle Leonard Williams and guard James Carpenter.
New York holds the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft after trading up with the Colts. It’s held private workouts for Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen and UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen.
“We feel pretty good how we positioned ourselves and how it’s going to play out,” Maccagnan continued to Watkins. “I’m very confident from that standpoint, that doesn’t faze me. [In] the [upcoming] college draft, [there are] guys you will [try] and guys that don’t pan out. That’s part of the process. We feel pretty good about this year’s group and where we’re situated.”
I can tell you now that all of those big name players will now be available. The only ones i see as possibly available would be Bell and Beckham the others will get contacts from their teams. Jets just need to draft a QB.
Agree
Gurley will also be available because they’ll tag Donald unless they can get one of them to an extension but I still see both of them definitely returning to LA
What are you trying to say? You stated they’ll all be available, then switched to “the only ones I see as possibly available…”
But how do you Jets fans feel about 2018?
Personally, I am optimistic. Team went 5-11 after projecting to go 0-16 and they only got blown out once or twice with McCown under center. They were in a lot of the games they lost. They have made key upgrades and although I was looking forward to the two 2nd round picks being used to bolster the OL and DL I still think the Jets can plug a lot of holes with the draft. Considering they beat both the Jags and the Bills last season and now that they have had significant upgrades I project them to be good. Great if Bridgewater lives up to his potential and the Jets O-Line does a better job than last year. But we’ll see.
Im hopeful they can at least be a .500 team
When you see that an organization would rather discuss the free agent market that is a year in the future rather than their current situation it’s a red flag that all is not well. I’d be concerned if I were a Jets fan.
Idk man, every MLB team is talking about the big FA class next year and are saving money for next years FA but it doesnt mean you should be concerned about your team. If its a star studded FA class next year then its worth talking about. They have addressed many needs. They still have more, sure, but they are a way better team than last year. Im not expecting a Super Bowl but im expecting serious improvements and maybe a WC berth. I mean, if the BILLS got a WC berth last year then the Jets certainly can this year.
unlikely any of them hit real FA, all franchise tagged except maybe Lawrence of his production drops off. Same with Bell.
I think it’s likely that Gurley reaches FA just because unless he or Donald sign an extension one won’t get tagged.
One of them will sign an extension. They seem to have something great going. Wouldn’t make sense to bail for the Jets unless they throw a stupid offer?
Bell is out of tags. FA after this year.
The Jets might have themselves a home run offseason in 2019, but here’s the thing: none of those players listed are going to be available on the open market. If any of those guys don’t have a long-term deal, they’ll get tagged.
Clearly $$ isn’t the object when the big FA’s of 2018 don’t go to NYJ. The team is a toilet bowl.
Seems to me the Jets are becoming the new Browns in the sense that no one wants to play there and I don’t blame them.
Very true seems the Jets are carrying the Browns curse.
That’s the Jets. Looking forward to next season as early as possible.
