Extra Points: Packers, Cobb, Matthews, Buccaneers, Beckwith, Jets, McGuire

Randall Cobb and Clay Matthews are two of the longest tenured members of the Packers, but their time in Green Bay could be coming to an end. There’s been a drop in production for both in recent years and both are heading into the final year of their contracts. Both have non-guaranteed salaries for 2018, and could be cap-casualties this summer.

When asked which big names could be on the chopping block this summer, Jason Fitzgerald of Overthecap.com listed both Cobb and Matthews (Twitter link). Cobb has been held to less than 700 receiving yards in back to back seasons and was recently spotted in a walking boot. If the Packers do decide to move on from either player, it would be the end of a very successful era for the fan favorites.

Here’s more from around the NFL:

I always forget, if they cut them and they remove the salary from the books do they get to roll it over to next offseason? Or will it simply be $20M+ in savings to use to for another stadium upgrade?

If the pack decide to stadium upgrade they will sell stock like they did last time. No need to hate. End of the day it’s a business and that means even fan favorites aren’t immune to getting cut. The packers are more than 1 player. Even the legend #4 learned that one the hard way.

No wasnt hating, it was legit question. Its not like the savings goes back into the Owners pocket, so it would go back into the team for other business purposes (i.e. stadium upgrade)
dont care about the players being cut, i get that part..Wondering if the money saved can be used towards next years cap or not.

We sort of have to sign this QB and will need all the cap room we can spare to do it. Any money we save on clay and Cobb will be used on extensions for 12 and Ha Ha.

A healthy Rodgers and Cobb will remind everyone that Cobb is worth every penny owed.
