Bruce Arians Won’t Commit To Jameis Winston Beyond 2019

While Bruce Arians said in November that Jameis Winston had a “really good chance” of landing a Buccaneers extension, if he played well down the stretch, the first-year Tampa Bay HC will not fully commit to it.

Asked Wednesday if Winston is in the franchise’s post-2019 plans, Arians said (via Jenna Laine of he will push that response until the end of the season. Winston’s contract expires at season’s end. Tampa Bay’s front office has not made a decision on Winston yet, Laine notes. Though it certainly helps that the GM who drafted Winston, Jason Licht, recently signed a contract extension.

I’m gonna pass on that one,” Arians said. “I’m gonna wait until the end of December. … There’s been really, really, really good and there’s been some really, really bad. I’m gonna pass until it’s over and then we’ll make a decision.”

Turnover-prone throughout his career, Winston has thrown a career-high 20 interceptions this season. A former Heisman Trophy recipient, Winston has committed an NFL-most 101 turnovers since 2015 but has also thrown 22 touchdown passes this season.

By not extending the 25-year-old quarterback, the Bucs would obviously be set to start over at the game’s premier position. If the season ended today, Tampa Bay would hold the 13th overall pick in next year’s draft.

too low to get the next franchise type QB, worst case scenario is transition tag him and give it one more year

it all luck but russell 3rd round, jimmy g 2nd round, kirk not the greatest but 4th round so on. the best QB in history tom brady 6th round.all sign you dont always need a first round QB.

Too low? There’s a thing called trading up. Mahomes went 10 and Watson 12 two years ago…you act like they don’t have a first lol

Might not be too low for Tua since injured but is he gonna be good and/or stay healthy

They should offer him a lower tier pillow contract. If he takes it, cool. Stop gap. If not, oh well. They weren’t going to compete next year anyway

Is it really a question on if they’re going to extend a rapist. Sorry “alleged” rapist. It’s one thing that he’s terrible at football but he’s also a terrible human being.

  5. Arians needs a QB with a good deep ball. That means no to Teddy Bridgewater, Tannehill and Tyrod… Winston won’t win a super bowl, but he will string together a couple good games a year. Maybe Fitzpatrick?

I thought Tannehill was being praised for taking and completing shots down field

Got to respect a guy who picks a look and sticks with it.

Arians is like the Slash of the NFL.

What if they traded for gardner minshew…hook him up with cam Newton’s scarf and fancy hat guy… and go back to the old swashbuckler logo?

Anyone who has crossed the state line into Florida is probably guilty of making a dumb decision.

Go get Cam if he’s healthy. Or talk Luck out of retirement and trade for him and we all know loved playing for Ariana and they connected well, had a nice run there when he was the interim coach.
