Sources have told NBC Sports’ Chris Simms that the 49ers are not going to sign quarterback Tom Brady. The Patriots legend, obviously, is entering free agency for the first time in his career and has been tied to San Francisco for some time. Brady grew up in the Bay Area and following Jimmy Garoppolo‘s struggles in the Super Bowl, many people were connecting the two.
While Simms noted he was unclear if anything had changed over the past few days, he stated that the 49ers were Brady’s preferred destination, but the organization plans to stick with Garoppolo. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports added in the aftermath of Simms’ report that the Titans and 49ers interest was “always more smoke than fire.”
Simms is a longtime friend of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and this may be the most public way San Francisco chooses to rebuke the rumors that have tied Brady to the Niners. Reading between the lines, if the 49ers were indeed Brady’s favorite destination, the rumors could have been entirely driven by his camp, while San Francisco never necessarily considered a change at quarterback.
Assuming Simms’ report is accurate after the Titans extended Ryan Tannehill earlier this afternoon, two of Brady’s most appealing options seem to be off the table. At this point, a return to New England seems like the only avenue available to Brady if he wants to be a contender, otherwise, teams like the Chargers, Buccaneers, or Raiders pose the largest threat to sign him away.
This has gotten really outta hand ppl thinking the 49ers would toss Jimmy aside for the GOAT 2 yr player. That would be a really dumb move by them, besides the negative pressure brought to Jimmy when all he has done is win his entire career in SF.
As a Pats fan n Brady fan I want them to make it happen but this has become a crazy situation. I just wish it was over.
Basically that is San Francisco saying “we would rather have Jimmy at 20-24 a year then Tom Brady at 30-35 a year“.

He is going back to New England. Always was. They just needed the CBA to be sorted out. Now that the pats can free up cap space, they will surround Brady with what he wants/needs. All the speculation and comments from the Brady camp were just posturing.
Exactly! There has been only two legitimate options for Brady in all this; Retire or Reunion.

They were talking that way cuz the talk sports shows have been brutal to Jimmy, whose done nothing but win for them.
Rct that was why Tom n crazy man AB did so well together, along with being batty he’s a terrific player, n had it worked out we wouldn’t have this drama now.

Jimmy is a rookie, just about. He made mistakes but nothing to deserve the abuse post Super Bowl. This is almost as bad as Bill Buckner got post WS loss yo the Mets. I think most of the blame should go to coaches who changed their game plans for the game. Jimmy has no nothing but win for the team. Personally wish he was back with the Pats, but he’s a good guy, everyone needs to cut him some slack.

Garoppolo was markedly better than Brady, is (again) 14 years younger, is already under contract, and will be cheaper than Brady. Absolutely no one in the 49ers organization wanted or wants Brady. Stop with this clickbait.
Ext be fair about it, TB had NO one to support him n Jimmy had n has a terrific team. Tom did great for what he had to support him. He had one receiver worth anything, frustration during the season for fans n for TB.
pasha2k this was the same thing jimmy g went through when he became he 49ers starter but also add in it was a brand new team and no preseason to acclimate to the team. He went 5-0 with a top receiver of Goodwin. You could say Kittle was there but he was a rookie at the time and just started playing more towards end of the season.
Ill give you Tom basically lost his safety net and what gave their team their biggest advantage in Gronk and couldnt replace his production. With that though they probably had the best ground game with depth the team has had with 4 rbs that would at min be 3rd down backs on most teams. Instead of utilizing that, tom threw more this year than ever the prior. Not sure if he was trying to prove himself without gronk but he is not the tom brady that can carry a team anymore. he is more the peyton manning that went to broncos at this point that should manage the game. He will need a really good defense to help him win and the only two teams i see that fits that mold is the chargers and the patriots.
