FEBRUARY 10: 49ers owner Jed York confirmed (via Josh Dubow of the Associated Press) the team has recently been in contact with Purdy’s agent regarding extension negotiations. He confirmed a deal remains the organization’s goal, so it will be interesting to see if talks progress in the near future or if this situation drags out deep into the offseason.
FEBRUARY 9: In the past, we may have mentioned 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy as an extension “candidate,” but according to Diana Russini of The Athletic, an “extension is inevitable.” While there was initially some intrigue around the situation due to the team’s earlier than expected elimination for the postseason, Russini assures everyone that the team has always planned on extending Purdy, never wavering on him as their franchise quarterback. Here’s how they got here and what an extension may look like.
Purdy has been the best bargain deal of the past three years. As Mr. Irrelevant of the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy has been letting the Niners off easy with his four-year, $3.74MM rookie contract. Now that Purdy is finally eligible for an extension, he’ll be a bargain no more. There are varying opinions, though, on just what an extension could look like for the 25-year-old.
Since taking over as the team’s starting quarterback in Week 13 of his rookie season, Purdy has secured a 23-13 regular season record and a 4-2 postseason record en route to two berths in the conference championship and a Super Bowl appearance. In the time since his first start, Purdy ranks fourth among all quarterbacks in QBR (70.2), third in passing yards (9,452), first in yards per attempt (8.9), and seventh in touchdown passes (64). He’s also recorded the most games with a 120-plus passer rating (13) and 130-plus passer rating (10) of any quarterback in NFL history through his first three seasons.
The only thing that could limit Purdy’s income potential is a down 2024 season. While still putting forth a strong performance, Purdy, like the rest of his team, took a step back this year. He completed a career-worst 65.9 percent of his passes, failed to reach 4,000 passing yards, and only threw 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. Additionally, Purdy understands that the more he makes, the fewer good players can surround him. With offensive stars like tight end George Kittle, left tackle Trent Williams, and wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, as well as defensive playmakers like linebacker Fred Warner and defensive end Nick Bosa, taking up the top portions of the salary cap, Purdy may need to be mindful of just how much his salary could affect that.
According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, some league sources believe that his contract could be built around that of Daniel Jones from two years ago (four years, $160MM). Adjusted for inflation, Graziano predicted a four-year, $196MM deal with $112MM guaranteed at the end of January, which would slot Purdy at 10th in average annual salary for quarterbacks. A week later, Graziano’s sources were making the case that Purdy’s deal should be able to rival the likes of those for players like Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in salary. While Lawrence doesn’t have the supporting cast Purdy does, Purdy has achieved much more in the regular and postseason. Still, Lawrence signed an extension last year that made him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL at the time with $275MM over five years with $142MM guaranteed.
Now, are the 49ers going to give Purdy $55MM per year, too, or even match or top Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott at the top of the pay scale with $60MM per year? Probably not. But these projections give us the basis for where negotiations could start. Both sides have cards they could play during those discussions, as well. Purdy has seen plenty of examples from his teammates on how to holdout for a new contract, something he mentioned may be a possibility, per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. The 49ers, on the other hand, have the ability to apply the franchise tag to him; they could even threaten to do it twice in a row for cheaper than the possible average salary he could eventually make.
Regardless, the consensus seems to be that, at some point soon, Purdy will be able to secure his future in the Bay Area. We’ll soon see just how well-financed that future will be, but regardless, Purdy won’t likely be the bargain he has been over the past three years for long.
Lmao his paycheck is going to piss so many people off can’t wait X-}
and that they are still going to have weapons around him because lynch has done a great job at pinching pennies. Aiyuk, Pearsall and Jennings along with CMC and Kittle are going to have a big year……just have to stay on the field.
Adjusted for inflation from a few years ago 160 millions equivalent now is 196 million?!
Have you not noticed your dollar buys a lot less??
Salary cap inflation. If the cap goes up to $275 million this year, that’s roughly a 22% inflation since Jones signed his contract. 122% of $160 million is a hair under $196 million.
Can we just wait until he signs an extension until the next article ? Or are going to get extensions speculation every three or four days for the next month?
Going to be plenty of articles because he is the next qb for a large extension.
Well his extension impacts their finances which could affect guys like Samuel aiyuk Jennings far as how they maneuver their cap situation. So his extension is pretty interesting cause guys could be on the move to make it happen.
Deebo is already getting booted. He wants out.
Aiyuk’s deal is going to get re-done after 2025 or he is getting booted also. Thats just how is structured.
As long as you, I and others continue to click on stories about it, they will continue to publish stories about it. That’s how it works.
As a 49er fan I would tag him one year and see what he can do with a healthy team. The team has too many glaring holes at key positions and we have a plethora of picks (11) and have the ability to trade up to get an impact player or two. A lot of the Free Agency talks this year for Lynch should be around DL/OL/CB. As we saw yesterday in the SB, those three positions were ultimately the reason Eagles dog walked the Chiefs in New Orleans last night.
Tag him and see if he can duplicate his 2023 season and then you have the ability to extend him.
Except you can’t apply the tag before the season… zero chance Brock is playing this season if that is the approach you are selling. He could get hurt again and then they won’t apply the tag. He is not playing with security.
Oh I know you cannot, but I think giving him $40M AAV is also a little far fetched. Probably $35M with some incentives kicked in totaling up to $40M.
The AAV is always overblown … it’s all about the guarantees and how the escalators smooths out the year over year. His first 2-3 years won’t be that bad at all and as long as he plays all 3 years (last year on his rookie contract + 2 extended), they can always restructure/move/etc.
Example that’s on one of the local SF sites, a 5/305 means his cap hit is 15M 23M, 29M with 70M guaranteed. It balloons up in 2028 where they probably restructure or waive/cut/trade based on how he’s done.
Similar to Love in GB, this overrated clown is about to put SF in cap hell. We all saw how mid he was when he didn’t have his full arsenal of weapons. Now Deebo will be gone, looks like CMC may never be the same, Ayuk’s contract is an albatross. It’s safe to say the SF championship window has closed. It’s a shame that Shanahan wet himself (AGAIN) when it mattered most, he might not get another crack at it.
Wish I can screenshot this and use it for next year.
Enjoy 5 more years of Poles!
Congrats, you just described about 95% of the quarterbacks in the league. See how awesome Mahomes was the first 7 games of the season without any weapons? That 82.3 qb rating wasn’t very sexy. The difference was he had a great defense stopping teams and Purdy didn’t. Their window is still wide open.
Purdy will get a huge extension for mediocre play. That’s what QBs are value now. Dak Prescott is getting how much for how little playoff success?
Same for Lawrence.
Yes, the same QB who led a comeback to beat Detroit for the NFC Championship. He will finally get paid …
I would think a non-cost adjusted Jones salary of 4 for 160 at best but I would say no. I just dont know if you want to pay a guy too much at all if you feel its not going to work without an incredible team around him. Those guys certainly are not worth 50 to 60 but probably not 40 and if so maybe just 1 or 2 years which Purdy wont accept. There are a lot of capable QBs who can perform on an excellent team with a great offensive mind running the team. SF does not have to pay a premium.
I mean they taught the whole league a lesson about succeeding without paying the QB a lot or spending draft capital to get one. They should understand it better than anybody. I assume CMC cant be relied on after that type of injury and getting to this stage of his career. He could be back to usual but cant bank on it. Deebo could be traded. Their record with him on the field is so much better than off it. Him gone and maybe CMC not 100%, I dont see Purdy shining. I mean he is capable. He should be a starting QB. Maybe a team like the Giants or Raiders feels he moves the needle for them over what they have had in recent years and they can justify the salary. For the 49ers dont think it makes sense.
Think it makes sense for SF to do Russell Wilson for 1 year 25 to 30M, draft a Dart or Ewers or Milroe and see if they can replicate what they had with Purdy in 2026, a capable cheap QB that allows them to add or keep expensive talent around him. The value in Purdy was he was productive and cheap. I dont think he is very valuable to SF as 40M or higher QB.
