Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is expecting to recover from a shoulder injury suffered during OTAs in time for training camp in July, per CBS Sports’ Zach Goodall.
Richardson said that he is “all good” and downplayed his recent injury as “not really even a bump in the road. However, it is a worrying sign for a former top-five pick who only played 15 games in his first two seasons. Richardson was already considered a raw prospect coming out of college, and his struggles to stay on the field have stunted his development in the pros.
Even when Richardson has been healthy, he has not been a starting-caliber quarterback. In 2024, he completed less than 50% of his passes and threw more interceptions (12) than touchdowns (eight). That caused the Colts to bring in Daniel Jones for $14MM this offseason as legitimate competition for the starting quarterback job.
Missing minicamp may not have put Richardson behind Jones, who had to learn a new offense, but an extended absence could put him at a disadvantage against the former Giant. Jones may have lost his starting job in New York, but he has still performed better than his new teammate in the last two years.
Richardson is determined, however, to not let his latest setback sideline him for training camp.
“I feel like I tripped, I fell,” continued Richardson (via Goodall). “Just got back up and hit the ground running again.”
How does the GM still have his job? Boring roster and an embarrassing QB room full of busts.
Only because of Irsay.
I’ll be quite shocked if Carlie doesn’t clean house after this season. Fans in Indianapolis aren’t going to be satisfied with the Colts mediocrity after seeing how well the Pacers played.
He’ll be back. Just a little tired is all.
Not knowing the offense isn’t going to put Jones behind Richardson, as Richardson doesn’t seem to know it yet either.
A bust is a bust. Maybe next year.
Name an NFL player with more pressure to perform than AR.
He will win the job (let’s be honest), but he has to show out. Mediocrity wont cut it. This year will decide if he is an NFL starter or a backup.
Im not convinced he is a backup either. Could playing in Canada.
Id still let him have his shot. Colts need invested alot in him, but the confidence level is low.
Im also not surprised if they end up in the running for Archies kid.
Sorry – Cooper kid Arch.
As someone who had to watch and endure 6 years of Daniel ‘checkdown’ Jones, if he beats you out for the QB job you should just start looking for a job at Home Depot.
The Colts should switch Richardson’s position. Try him like a Taysom Hill type. RB/QB/TE. He has great rushing ability and can come in make a thrownwoth his strong arm at times. Just a thought.
He can’t stay healthy at QB. No way he survives a position switch
Richardson got a bad shoulder. But don’t get down on jones because he’s not that bad, when he was at nag he did’nt have a cast of receivers that will be with Indy this year. He going to be comeback player of the year. AND HE GOT PROFESSOR STEICHEN at the controls. INDY record this coming year 11-6 maybe 12-5 Indy blew a lot of heartbreakers last year.
Hoping for the best for Richardson. The Colts have to be kidding re: Daniel Jones.
