Things did not go according to plan for Bryce Huff in 2024. The high-priced free agent addition was present for only year with the Eagles, spending time in and out of the lineup before being among the team’s healthy scratches for the Super Bowl.
In all, Huff managed just 2.5 sacks in 12 games as an Eagle. Despite having two years left on his $17MM-per-year contract, it came as little surprise when a trade was worked out to send him to the 49ers. The 27-year-old will reunite with Robert Saleh as a result of the swap, something he anticipated last summer.
“If I’m being 100% honest with you, I wanted a trade like fairly early on,” Huff said during an appearance on The SFNiners podcast (video link). “And just ’cause of how things went in Philly, I knew pretty early on it wasn’t a fit.
“There’s a plethora of things that went down. I don’t wanna get into specifics. Being in the league for five years, I kinda knew what it felt like to be in a good situation… I kind of knew where it was headed fairly early on into the season, probably even training camp if I’m being honest.”
Scheme fit was seen as a potential issue for Huff in Philadelphia, although he handled a similar workload with his second career team as he did during his final year with the Jets. Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio noted the wrist injury which required surgery and led to missed time as a key factor in Huff’s underwhelming production. He predicted a return to form will take place in San Francisco, where Huff will again work with Saleh (who took his former 49ers DC gig after the two were together during his Jets head coaching stint).
In San Francisco, Huff will be used as a third-down specialist, a role he thrived in with New York. The former UDFA will look to earn snaps as part of a rotation including Nick Bosa, Yetur Gross-Matos and first-round rookie Mykel Williams. If things play out as team and player hope, the 49ers’ decision to take on the remainder of Huff’s pact will prove to be an effective one and a repeat of his situation from last summer will be avoided.
“Plethora of issues”…on the best defense in the league and Super Bowl champions, no thanks to you.
Maybe look in the mirror, Bryce.
A great team can still be a bad fit.
This is certainly true but if you watch his tape for the first 5 games, saying he is “giving 0 effort” is actually doing him a favor. It got so bad that other teams wouldn’t even bother using a lineman on him. Back up tight ends were making him look like he was in highschool, and that has absolutely nothing to do with scheme. This dude has no mental fortitude if you ask me.
Well, a team whose defensive coordinator coached him for four years thought he was worth bringing in. As a Jets fan, I thought it was too much money to give a guy who’s really only a designated pass rusher, but he was a very good player for the Jets. I’d be surprised if that’s just gone.
I’m not disagreeing with that either. It was definitely too much money and it was a big swing and miss for Howie, but I could see why he went for it. It was just disappointing to see such a lack of effort in the early parts of the season. He actually did come close to kind of turning it around and then got hurt, but that first 5-6 games before he got hurt he genuinely looked like he would struggle in a highschool game. It was so awful I was actually worried maybe he had some serious personal issues no one knew about.
Fangio alluded to most of that in his comments, KC33, so I think that you’re right. Huff didn’t say anything egregious here, don’t get me wrong, but I think that Fangio was more gracious in comparison. It does seem right to say that Huff did improve, but that injury closed the door on any real return on investment for Philly.
As for Huff himself…Oof is right in that he can certainly contribute in a specific role. Philly tried to expand beyond that, which didn’t work, but Huff gave a good pass rush presence to a needy Jets front that built on his strengths individually. Being back with Saleh is a boon to his future prospects this year, but given how far he fell last season, he’s got prove a lot of his worth all over again in San Fran.
Howie did it so he wouldn’t have to pay Reddick.
I watch games where his name wasn’t even entered into any statistical category and he was on the field. It was like they had 10 guys out there when he played.
He picked the right number in Philly 0 because he was one.
HE HAD A CAST ON HIS HAND.
Come on dude be looked AWFUL before the cast. Those first couple games he was DREADFUL. Now I admit the 2 games before he did get hurt he was slowly turning a corner but the first I think 3-4 games his effort level looked like one of the coaches might have slept with his wife and he was being spiteful. Backup tight ends were pushing him 5 yards down field with ease.
He literally had a cast on his hand. Just stop it already.
He was hurt and learning a new position that was a bad fit. I wonder if uncertainty and hesitation looked like poor effort.
Uncertainty or hesitation does not affect being a backside player chasing down the ball. The second he realized it either wasn’t a pass, or the QB had gotten rid of the ball he just quit. It was especially obvious on running plays. There were countless times you saw him just simply give up on a play that he could have been needed for. I’m all for giving someone the benefit of doubt due to this very reason, but his “lazy” plays were clearly just a lack of effort they were not from hesitancy. The game or 2 before he got hurt he looked like he realized he needed to pretend to give a crap for the 2025 season and whoever his new team would be, and then he did look much better. But it was pure effort issues when it came to whether he played well or poorly.
Yeah success roots out mediocrity so maybe he learned something about himself. He was a typical good player on a bad team with the Jets and when he got to a great team he was exposed as a fraud.
He was a good player on a great defense.
Stop embarrassing yourself with these takes, libertybell.
I watch all the games cuz. You’ll comment back at me bc you live for these chats. Bro I could care less what you think about my takes. The guy was a bum. Should have had a whole body cast on as a bigger excuse. And the 2023 eagles were a mess and made many teams look like world beaters and opposing defenses look like killers.
This take shows you don’t even watch football. New York’s defense embarrassed us in 2023 so what’s your excuse there, guy?
The Jets were likely a playoff team that year if Rodgers doesn’t get hurt. Just stop talking already. You’re making real Eagles fans like me look bad.
If Rodger…if my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle. Whatever real Eagles fan! Lol.
Yup, he knew right away that he was going coast and not put in the effort…
Bryce: “Fans in Philly will drink Duff beer but have no interest in Huff beer so I had no choice but to leave town”.
It was a bad signing/fit but he certainly didn’t help his own cause.
So glad he’s gone. Give that ring back.
Kirby Smart deserves it more than he does
God just stop it already.
Bryce left in a HUFF !!
Checked out as soon as the bonus check cleared. Why admit that is wasnt working out FROM TRAINING CAMP?
Wanting to make it work on a team that believed in you enough to pay you, maybe?
The dude played in a CAST the whole season. Just stop it already.
And just stop with the CAST already, a lot of guys had played hurt and/or with casts on their hands over the years and still produced. He gave little effort…good riddance.
He only has himself to blame. The opportunity was there and the investment was made into him. He flat out under performed and it was more glaring because the guys who were younger, more hungry and less paid took his spot from him and they helped the team win a Super Bowl. There’s no turning back after that regardless of not being 100% at times etc. that’s how good the Eagles D was. It could healthy scratch their top free agent on D that was supposed to make people forget about Hassan Reddick and still win. Hassan Reddick is kicking himself in the a$$ now too.
God you’re so insufferable.
Reddick isn’t kicking anything. The Eagles weren’t going to pay him after he got double digit sacks both years with us.
Bryce Huff is to the 2024/2025 Eagles Super Bowl Championship as Adam Eaton was to the 2008 World Series winning Phillies. Both on the roster, made no positive impact and got rings in the face of their mediocrity. And they got paid. Not bad for underperforming.
Stick to talking Phillies if you’re gonna make comparisons like that.
You are actually the insufferable creep. What do you speak for all of us Eagles fans. He was a bum, a bust and a bad signing for many reason and his effort and attitude and what we saw him do on the field, cast or not sealed his fate. As a real Eagles fan, you know all of what he didn’t do is a recipe for disaster for any player in Philly since the Eagles became a franchise. But I get it, you’re a fan boy and booing and criticizing millionaires is something that is beneath you. Sorry to offend you. Huff made Mike Mamula (do you know who that is?) look like a star.
“Being in the league 5 years, I knew what it felt like to be in a good situation”
How? You played for the jets. Even their owner knows thats not a good situation. Sounds like dude is 100% about his own stats, and thinks the team should bend their gameplan to suit him getting his, not the other way around. Good riddance. Should of traded him to Miami to play with the other primadonnas that were more interested in doing it their way than winning football games…..but nobody except SF was dumb enough to trade fir him
Clown take.
Really sick of people who make the rest of us Eagles fans look bad by not ever being able to show grace and doing nothing but ignorantly dumping on players who are not longer with the team.
Wah wah wahhhh.
Ok dad
This is a perfect example of a player talking too much. This doesn’t help him. He just basically admitted he “checked-out” in training camp, then the Eagles went on and won the Superbowl while ignoring him…
He could have went in low profile, to the 49ers, and rebuilt his stock for when his guaranteed money runs out this year. But no, he has to let the public know he’s weak minded and a quitter, and if he gets off to a slow start, the 49ers are going to start looking at him sideways. And if that happens he can forget getting anymore money out of the rest of the league, next year.
Thats the problem, while youre spouting off to all the commenters. The Eagles should have kept and paid Reddick instead of bringing in Huff. Yes, he got hurt but still played below standard. My take was that you dont talk about having issues while in training camp. You do whatever the team asks you to do after giving you a fat contract. Those comments could blow up in his face but hopefully Salad will get his best for at least 500 snaps.
I was feeling the same way about Reddick this time last year, but now I have a feeling he was one of the locker room cancers in 23 that made things worse when the wheels fell off. He apparently just made things much worse and ruined his standing with upper management. I don’t think they had any intention of bringing him back once locker room clean out hit, even if he’d had offered a discount
Yeah, Reddick probably wishes he could have done things differently going back to 2023, but we will see if he gets back to being a great pass rusher this year. He deserved a ring in 2022 but shenanigans happened with that slick SB field.
He was so lights out in 22. I still got love for the guy, but it was unfortunate how he behaved at times in 23. I still think he’s one of the most underrated edge players in the league, cuz when he is truly on he’s insane. But his attitude apparently sucks which is a bummer
