The Giants are among the NFL teams looking into the sale of a minority ownership stake. Eli Manning showed early interest in a bid, but he has since backed out of that endeavor.
During an interview with CNBC Sport (video link), the two-time Super Bowl winner said he is no longer pursuing an ownership stake. Costs were cited as a key reason, to no surprise. Manning also noted the potential conflict of interest concerns which would have been raised had he joined the Giants’ ownership group while remaining a broadcaster with ESPN (among his other post-playing pursuits).
“Basically, it’s too expensive for me,” Manning said. “These numbers are getting very big… A one percent stake of something valued at $10 billion — it turns into a very big number.”
Forbes valued the Giants at $7.3 billion last August, but recent ownership sales have demonstrated the upward movement in the market since then. The Eagles were valued at over $8 billion when they moved forward with the sale of a non-controlling stake, and figures on that front – even as it pertains to shares no larger than 10% in many cases – are set to continue rising in years to come.
The approval of Tom Brady‘s Raiders ownership stake came at a cost tied to a deflated franchise valuation (along with similar conflict of interest concerns, of course). While his bid was ultimately approved following a lengthy review process by the league’s controlling owners, Manning will not wind up in the same situation with the Giants.
Maybe include the source where he said that part of the reason was for broadcasting. With how much of a hot button topic it is to bring up Brady and his Raiders and broadcasting connections, it’s worth including. Not a huge deal, but these things get wayyyyy too blown out of proportion
I disagree, I don’t think that it’s blown out of proportion at all. Any risk, no matter if it is under or over rated, is still present, and given that none of us are there to see what information or observances are apparent to broadcast team members, we can’t verify which it may be.
No matter what, though, why even bother taking the chance? Why is Brady or Manning or anyone entitled to being a broadcaster? Make him pick, just like Manning did. It’s not like Brady needs this to keep the lights on.
Jerry Jones, Jeffrey Lurie and Josh Harris would probably love to see Manning with an ownership stake in the Giants as it would ensure the G-men stay inept. They should start a GO FUND ME campaign for Eli.
Idk why anyone would buy these franchises at these numbers – NBA is going nuts too. Idk how you make a ROI on that.
NFL franchise values are going to keep going up. They’re going to add an 18th game sooner than later and more importantly, the new TV deals in 2029 are going to be ridiculous. Sports are one of the only things people watch live instead of streaming now, so advertisers pay a fortune, and the NFL’s ratings are incomparable. I think it was 2023 when 93 of the top 100 rated broadcasts that calendar year were the NFL. The franchise value numbers are insanely high, but for good reasons.
Ever seen the value of a sports franchise go down? Nope. It’s the best investment rich guys can make.
Oh, ok.
He doesn’t have that kind of money to actually buy his way into power.
He would have been just like Magic Johnson is with the Dodgers. Nothing more than a notable face.
The Dodgers were also a lot cheaper and Johnson has a lot more money than Manning.
He does now since he had/has stakes in the Lakers, Dodgers and Redskins. He smart.
No pro teams are going down in value. Good investments if you can get in and let it marinate for a few years.
He made a ton of money between his playing days and having any stake in any teams.
