Questions about Breece Hall‘s Jets future arose leading up to the draft. The fourth-year running back was not traded and received assurances from new head coach Aaron Glenn that he would remain in place for 2025.
In spite of that, it remains to be seen if a commitment beyond the coming campaign will be made. 2022 draftees Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson have both received monster extensions, but other members of the class are in position to wait for new deals. That includes Hall, who is entering the final year of his rookie pact and recently confirmed he does not expect an extension to take place any time soon.
As a result, questions about the former second-rounder’s future could continue depending on how he and the Jets perform to begin the 2025 campaign. According to Sportkeeda’s Tony Pauline, some close to the matter “speculate” Hall could still wind up being dealt before this season’s trade deadline. Such a move would lead to 2024 Day 3 selections Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis taking on larger roles in the backfield. Glenn has indicated a desire for a backfield committee approach, meaning a true workhorse gig in Hall’s case would come as a surprise.
The Iowa State product’s encouraging rookie season was cut short by an ACL tear. Expectations were high for Hall upon returning to the lineup in 2023, but his 4.5 yards per carry average marked a notable decline. Averaging 4.2 yards per attempt last season, Hall once again topped 1,300 scrimmage yards but struggled to regain his former efficiency. The 2025 campaign will be critical in his case given the potential of a free agent departure next spring.
The Jets’ new regime did not select a running back in April’s draft, an indication Hall will have a run atop the depth chart to at least begin the coming season. The team’s success through the first two months of the campaign will of course be critical in determining how the trade deadline is approached for New York. In the absence of a investment for 2026 and beyond in Hall’s case, it will be interesting to see if the prospect of a trade gains steam over time or if an encouraging start to the campaign quells speculation about such a move.
He will be a Cowboy at the Deadline!!!!
I like that idea, but what is the trade value for him right now?
His contract negotiations are coming up – which is probably another factor in the openness to a trade.
A mid round pick is the absolute ceiling imo, but is that enough for the Jets to pull the trigger?
But assuming the price is fair – makes sense.
What good would it do the jets to move him at all? If he plays amazingly the ceiling the McCaffrey deal a few years back, I don’t see that happening. If he plays to what his averages are what would he bring back, a mid round pick and some salary relief? Let him play it out and walk then take the comp pick instead maybe?
I can’t imagine a positive scenario for a team trading a RB where they get anything of actual value in return.
If he’s playing well and can land them half the McCaffrey deal, and they don’t want to sign him to big money after the season, why not?
Hall fumbles the ball every 74 touches on average so if the Jets could get a ham sandwich for this guy they should jump at the deal. Addition by subtraction.
Hall had a total of three fumbles his first two seasons combined, then had six last year in a dysfunctional offense. He’s only 24, he’s a big play threat as a rusher or receiver, and he’s consistently outgained what the line has given him. Saying he’s not worth a ham sandwich because of what looks like an outlier season in one stat is stupid.
I feel like Hall is going to be a breakthrough player once he leaves that organization. As long as he doesn’t land on a similarly dysfunctional team.
He will have a good year if the blocking is there. Can he stay healthy though?
If it does happen great fits are Cowboys Cardinals Broncos or Steelers
Cowboys I could see. Broncos have a pretty full room with a highly drafted rookie. Mostly same for the Steelers. Cardinals should be set with Conner and Benson. Chiefs could make sense.
Broncos have very young unproven RBs. Dobbins and Breece could be a nice Lions style one two RB punch imo.
They took Harvey in the second round. By the time we’re near midseason, you’d think he would be part of any one-two punch. As for Dobbins, he signed for peanuts and he has slightly more touches in his whole career than Montgomery has in the last two years, even though Montgomery has missed half a dozen games in that time. I like Dobbins, but any time he spends actually healthy and playing is gravy at this point.
Breece could fit somewhere though. Hmmm….Vikings?
Cowboys and Chiefs make the most sense to me right now. Both have playoff aspirations. Both lack a big play alpha out of the backfield. Neither has very big investments at running back. As for other teams, I think we might need to see who’s contending and who’s got injuries, since Hall is only a rental.
Interesting
He had half a good season three years ago. He hasn’t been the same since his knee injury his rookie year.
