As a result of Aidan O’Connell‘s wrist fracture, the Raiders will be shorthanded at the quarterback position to begin the season. Acquiring depth represents a priority over the coming days.

“All possibilities are available right now,” head coach Pete Carroll said on Sunday when asked about the team’s QB plans (via ESPN’s Ryan McFadden). ” I mean, wherever they come from, and we’re looking everywhere to see [if] we find the best guy that fits us.”
With teams beginning the process of reaching 53 on their respective rosters, plenty of players have become available recently. That includes a few quarterbacks. Earlier today, the Vikings released Brett Rypien as part of their shake-ups at the position. Since then, the Browns have made the expected move of cutting Tyler Huntley. Both veterans will immediately reach free agency (without needing to clear waivers first).
The Raiders have Geno Smith atop the depth chart for 2025, and undrafted rookie Cam Miller is in the fold as a depth option. Fellow UDFA Tommy Mellott played quarterback in college, but as expected he has worked as a receiver upon entering the NFL. For at least as long as O’Connell is unavailable, the team could benefit from having a veteran presence behind Smith.
Indeed, Carroll noted experience is a factor which will play an important role in the team’s search process. For that reason, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal names Ryan Tannehill as a potential target. Tannehill did not play last year, but with 151 starts to his name the 37-year-old would certainly qualify as a veteran QB2 option.
With nearly $35MM in cap space, the Raiders will not have a problem affording any short-term addition which winds up being made in time for Week 1. Free agency (amongst the signal-callers already cut) and/or trades represent avenues for a new passer to be brought in. The waiver wire will also be busy over the coming days, and Vegas could elect to take that route instead.
Who’s even left? CJ Beathard?
There has been some QBs released and as article says Tannejill possibly?
Maybe he will, but I’m not holding my breath for Tannehill to ever sign with an NFL team again.
Tannehill is done. Any mobility he had left is gone by now.
You’ve got him and the other one the Jets tried out, Nathan Peterman. As for the Jets, I could see them giving Hendon Hooker a shot at QB3 if the Lions waive him since he’d be familiar with Engstrand’s system.
Three years in the Lions don’t even trust him to be backup in it.

Ryan Tannehill maybe? Make calls for Mike white or case keenum?
White I could see. I suspect Chicago wants Keenum around as a veteran presence. I think Tannehill is done.
Tannehill went out with a whimper. I don’t even think he tried to get signed to another team
Skylar Thompson and a 7th for a 6th will be read soon enough (be is LV or elsewhere)
Giving up a 3030 (yes, 3030) seventh round pick is too much for Skylar Thompson.
Have Colin Kaepernick and Shedeur Sanders (after the Browns cut him) battle it out for the backup position.
Adrian Martinez
Bring back Derek Carr!

If the Chargers keep only two quarterbacks, Taylor Heinicke will become available. Also, Tommy DeVito from the Giants is as good as gone. Case Keenum has been mentioned since the Bears extended Tyson Bagent recently. There’s a decent chance the Bills will cut Mike White & keep Mitchell Trubisky. I think that’s probably their best remaining options unless they seriously consider Peterman, but they have had him as a reserve before under a different head coach.
@dangard75. You can probably add Kenny Pickett, and hendon hooker.
I don’t think Hooker has developed enough for anyone to see him as a serviceable #2 quarterback, I think he’s just gonna end up on someone’s practice squad. Pickett isn’t going anywhere, Cleveland likes him enough that if he wasn’t hurt, he’d probably be the starter over Flacco.
@dangard75. Yeah but flacco getting named the starter sealed Pickett’s fate browns aren’t keeping 4 QBs. Hooker would most likely be the backup. he’s what Carroll likes. I would take a shot on him. Raiders probably are finishing in last place so might as well see if you have a backup for next year.
It seems telling that the team that actually has Hooker has repeatedly not trusted him to be their backup.
@Oooof. Just seems like he would be a Carroll guy. It’s pretty much like geno Smith he hasn’t moved around yet. But it sounds like he isn’t grasping the system and Campbell pretty said sometimes to develop you need a change of scenery. Maybe Carroll will tailor the offense to his skill set some coaches dont budge. Idk I prefer a mobile quarterback for the backup spot
Rexhudler86 did you not read the story on August 24th, 2025 at 10:52pm CST by Adam La Rose which was one story before this one?

@bwood. Berry always does that. So im not buying that’s how it ends. Even keeping three QBs on the roster is a waste. But he forced that hand.
Do not be so quick to underestimate the imbecilic nature of the Browns.
Tom Brady: “There’s got to be a loophole somewhere that will allow me to be an owner, broadcaster and a QB” 🙂
A Hooker in Vegas?
Keenum pushed down to 3rd string after the Bagent extension and the Bears have some interesting bubble players at WR and OL that might be available.
@mswboxer. Chargers have some interesting dl, linebackers, and corners they could trade for OL.
