2:40pm CT: Joseph is not expected to be the 49ers’ next kicker, according to NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco. Though the veteran spent the offseason in San Francisco, the team will be looking for another option to succeed Moody.
11:50am CT: With two of his three field goals failing to split the uprights on Sunday, Jake Moody‘s 2024 struggles appear to have carried over into the 2025 season. As a result, the 49ers are moving on from the 2023 third-round pick, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Moody impressed as a rookie by converting 84.0% of his field goals and a league-high 60 extra points on 61 attempts. In 2024, he got off to a hot start with six field goals in Week 1 and a 93.9% conversion rate through five weeks before an ankle injury sidelined him for three games. The 25-year-old struggled from distance for the rest of the season, making just five of his 14 attempts from over 40 yards.
The 49ers explored other kicker options this offseason and signed six-year veteran Greg Joseph as potential competition, but new special teams coordinator Brant Boyer still expressed confidence in Moody. Joseph was cut before the preseason and Moody went six-for-seven on field goals and five-for-six on extra points to stave off any chance of a last-minute signing.
However, Moody underperformed in the 49ers’ regular season opener against the Seahawks with a 27-yard field goal clanging off the left upright and another attempt from 36 yards getting blocked. That kept the game close and forced San Francisco to score a touchdown with 1:34 remaining to win the game.
The 49ers don’t have another kicker on their active roster or practice squad, so they will need to make an addition before Week 2. Re-signing Joseph would be the team’s most obvious option. He worked out for the Bills and the Dolphins in late August but neither visit resulted in a deal. Several teams have kickers that could be poached from their practice squads – including Matt Prater in Buffalo and Riley Patterson in Miami – and a number of veteran free agents are also available.
About time
One less football terrorist in the league
lol what?
He must be a Michigan State fan.
For the millionth time, don’t bother drafting kickers at all, especially not before the last two rounds, let alone on day two.
unless its janikowski
I mean, he was worth drafting I guess, but not nearly where he was taken.
If you could draft a kicker that you knew would be nails for you and hit from distance for a decade would you do it w the 17th pick? Idk if I would either but there been a lotta top 20 busts
No, I’d rather have a coin flip chance at a good starter at a much more valuable position than definitely have a solid kicker.
Never draft a K, especially that high.
He never should have been on this roster if his leash was one missed kick
It seems like he was somehow to blame for the blocked kick too which seems odd to me. Kind of joking, but this article and others I’ve read tilts the blocked FG or PAA as someh w on the kicker. Unless he is slow to make the kick, that part seems silly.
I thought about 99.9% of the time, a blocked kick is due to a missed block along the line.
He was slow on that kick and it looked like a Seahawks player vaulted themselves
Man, so many teams stressing out about kickers…
—-Steelers fan
These guys will probably decide the outcome of 3 games each week so the stressing out by coaches is understandable. The best kickers are still criminally underpaid.
Great kickers are worth their weight in gold if you’re lucky enough to find one. If Boswell wanted to be the highest paid player on the Steelers, I wouldn’t even complain. And the Steelers found him in a mid-season free agent tryout way back when.
I would love to hear from a stealers fan about the Boswell experience, I thought of him with the moody stuff. He had 2 AWFUL years sandwiched between great years. Did Steelers fans ever turn on him, and if so how long till he won them back?
It was more like 1 bad year. Fans didn’t turn on him really. At least in my corner of the internet. I think there weren’t any big kicks missed that clearly cost them games, which was a big part of it
As a Steelers fan myself, I agree…haha
Actually, the Niners should give Ben Sauls a look as he kicked pretty well for the Steelers this preseason.
Any Robbie Gould sightings lately? 🙂
You NEVER draft a kicker. Wait until one gets good and then sign in FA. PERIOD.
I generally agree. However with the increased distance on the extra point, if you get a generational kicker, they’d be invaluable. But if they are just a very good kicker, they’d UDFA
How many drafted kickers have turned out to be the best ones? One of the reasons I say not to draft kickers is that they aren’t predictable to evaluate.
We don’t even have a replacement signed yet. Just reported that it won’t be Greg Joseph, and no other candidates have been brought in yet.
You know his time needed to come to an end when there’s a possibility that the punter handles kickoffs and we only go for 2 against the Saints this week
They’re bringing in Eddie Pineiro for a workout, hopefully they sign him
He was so good in college at Michigan my hometown team. It’s mind boggling why he hasn’t fixed his issues in the offseason. Chicago will pick him up.lmao
