The Giants will be starting rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in Week 4, but their move toward the future is not expected to drive Russell Wilson out of New York.
Head coach Brian Daboll saidthat he expects Wilson to be the backup quarterback for the rest of the season, per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. A parting of ways via a release or a trade is not under consideration. Wilson also shut down any talk of such a move.
“I’m focused on helping this team win. I’m focused on helping Jaxson,” he said on Wednesday (via Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic). “I want to be here. I love this organization.”
The Giants’ quarterback switch will naturally lead to trade speculation regarding Wilson, especially with quarterback injuries piling up around the league. But if neither side is interested in parting ways, it would take some significant interest to pry the 36-year-old out of New York. Given that his 78.5 passer rating is eighth-worst among QBs with at least 40 passing attempts to start the year, such an aggressive suitor is unlikely to come calling.
Wilson has also been in the NFL long enough to know that his early-season benching does not necessarily mean that he’ll be riding the pine for the rest of the year. The Giants originally planned to bring Dart along slowly but accelerated their timeline due to his progression and Wilson’s regression. If he struggles to get settled on the field, a coaching staff that’s rumored to be on the hot seat could get antsy and go back to their proven veteran.
In other words, there’s always a place for a quarterback with Wilson’s experience and pedigree on a team desperate for a solution under center.
Given how many times they’ve gone back and forth on who would call plays, they need to leave room to backtrack this decision too.
Get him out of there. You don’t want his negativity with being benched for a rookie around that locker room as you try to develop a young QB. You have a backup in Winston. Cut bait with a guy that’s going to be a huge headache in that QB room if he’s not playing.
And if Dart or Winston get injured then what? They bring in Nathan Peterman?
Either way, the season is lost. Then it just becomes a matter of how good the draft pick will be.
Every team can say that my man. If it gets to that point, 1. Do you think they’ll be in the playoff hunt for it to even matter and 2. you think Russell Wilson going out there after being benched is a positive thing? The answer is no to both. So yes, they probably would bring in someone such as Peterman or Tim Boyle
@crosseyedlemon: If Dart and Winston got injured, they could throw a 7th at New England and get Tommy Cutlets back. I mean, he already knows the offense!
Do you seriously think that Kraft, and even Brady giving his two cents, would ever help out the NY Giants…..if you do, I have a bridge to sell you….
Im not sure why youre just assuming Russ is some lockerroom cancer when nothing really suggests that. He seems to get along with his teammates just fine outside of when Denver blamed him for everything
Benjamin did you not pay attention to how glad us Seahawks Fans were glad to get rid of him. He is very passive aggressive caused a huge rift between the O and D.
Did you see the D players reaction to the int he threw? Because the announcers said it was a bad play call everyone just bought it. The one call that was bad was splitting Lynch out to basically telling everyone it was a pass. It was the pass that was bad. Too high and led him too much. The pass was a bit over waist high and led him enough to let the DB get in front of the WR. Ball should have pinned him down and been knees to waist high but closer to the knees. A well placed pass would have been at worst incomplete at best a TD. They needed to throw a pass at least once. So if they kept Lynch in the backfield and Wilson made a good pass we would have won and the hated Patriots would have 1 less rings. The team probably would have stayed together for a few more years. Wilson is a team cancer and not well liked by many. His Christian faith is also a crock. What good Christian man would marry Ciera? More so let her dress like she does. My Niece went to the same church as him. He walked in and out with the preacher and had 2 rows blocked off to separate him from the lower life forms. This was the same church most of the players would go to from all sports teams in Seattle went to. They were all treated with respect and never bothered to give out autos and if they didn’t have time or any reasons not to give them that was respected. Russ will say the right things but most will have some truth and some passive aggressive attitude behind them. We can only hope another NFCW team will trade for him or the Patriots or any team we play will trade for him. Give us another win or two.
It’s nice for both player and team to appear on the same page, but if a QB needy team comes calling, I’m sure NYG will entertain moving Russ with Jameis on the roster too.
“I’m focused on helping this team win. I’m focused on helping Jaxson, I want to be here. I love this organization.” — the verbal diarrhea was too much with this one.
Wanna Bet on that??
I will bet you. Foolish bet on your part. Us Hawk fans lived it all from hero to a pain in the butt. Look up Lynches interview about him a couple years ago. He tired of the BS. Look up most of the Ds feelings. I have no love for Bennet but he hardly says bad about anyone. He had no love for Him. Give me your Venmo acct and and how much you want to bet. You have already lost.
Seahawks fan here. We have very different perspectives on Wilson’s tenure in Seattle. I’ll just leave it at that.
Tell me Mr Copperpot did the D fall apart after the SB loss? Was the pass in the SB poorly thrown? Have you looked up any of the interviews after the SB loss? Russ had some good years here no doubt but Pete had to bow to his fragile ego. There is a ton of proof Pete lost the team after the SB loss you just need to look. Seattle traded him away at the right time to get the most value out of him.
I agree with your last sentence.
Guess the Giants haven’t learned that sitting a rookie QB and letting him learn vs throwing him out too soon, breeds success 🤔
Coaching staff seems more concerned with their jobs then long term success for Dart … play Winston, let Dart sit and learn! Geez
Oh Russ, come on… We know you don’t mean that. I hope he’s had his fill of humble pie after the diva he was in Seattle. Prove me wrong. I hope he helps that young QB. Show me that I’m wrong Russ.
I honestly was expecting Russell to play great in New York. Maybe he’s washed up, or maybe he’s still 0-3 even if he played great. Giants’ schedule is very difficult. No Giants fan expecting 3-0 to start the season.
