Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was formally charged on Sunday for his role in an incident which took place in Indianapolis. Sanchez was initially charged with three misdemeanors, but his case will now include at least one felony count.
Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears announced Monday morning that Sanchez now faces a felony battery charge involving serious bodily injury (h/t Fox 59’s Angela Ganote). That Level 5 charge carries a prison sentence of one to five years. Mears added the case is still being investigated, so further charges could be forthcoming.
A $300 bond was posted yesterday, as detailed by Mark Maske and Ben Strauss of the Washington Post. An initial court hearing had been scheduled for tomorrow, but Ganote notes Sanchez’s attorneys have now filed a motion to waive that proceeding. Instead, they are seeking a pre-trial conference. The judge overseeing this case has granted the motion, per Ganote. As a result, the first proceeding in this case will be a conference on November 4.
Sanchez – whose NFL career lasted from 2009-18 and included time spent with six different franchises – is alleged to have instigated an altercation with a 69-year-old man this past weekend. The alleged victim was sent to hospital with “serious injuries.” Sanchez was stabbed multiple times and also hospitalized. As of Monday morning, the 38-year-old is in stable condition but still in hospital (h/t Ganote).
Sanchez was in Indianapolis to work as FOX’s color analyst for the Raiders-Colts Week 5 game. The network has yet to comment on the situation aside from its statement issued Saturday afternoon following Sanchez’s hospitalization and arrest. Per Maske, Sanchez’s attorneys have no comment at this time.
How to kill a career with just a few beers. Sanchize has always been a dumbass.
Yeah? What else has he done to make him a “dumbass”?
The Butt Fumble
That makes someone clumsy.
If running into someone makes you a “dumbass” then every time you bump into someone you’re a “dumbass” yourself.
Well maybe Sanchez is Dumas from Shawshank Redemption
The Butt Fumble doesn’t make him a “dumbass.” That was an inadvertent and unfortunate moment on a football field. Making jokes about someone who foolishly makes their life dramatically worse, does.
I mean, it was a long time ago (2006) but he was accused of SA and suspended for it. Details even at the time were scant, though, and Sanchez until now hasn’t really done anything that anyone would consider “dumbass” behavior since.
You mean besides the Butt Fumble, the streaking stories and the awkward off-field stuff?
He can still do his podcast if people consider that a job.
Can he do that from Jail?
Probably heard people in jail still do TikTok so he can get a phone.
Not only that but that victims family are going to sue him for a boat load of money.
The more facts leak daily the more bizarre it gets.
His wife is free game now lmao
Shoot your shot, young man.
Lol
Wait, the altercation was with a senior citizen? When 350 pound Ben Cleveland got charged with DUI I wondered how much he must have had to drink for that to happen, but I think Mark Sanchez may have had even more.
The whole “69 year old man” thing sounds like the beginning of one of those “You can’t make this $hit up” stories.
Sucked as a player. Sucked as a commentator. Now we’ll see how he does as the “victim”.
Victim? Maybe once he goes to prison he will be a victim.
You know, I actually liked him on commentary. I definitely did not expect to.
Way to butt fumble another career.
Look on the bright side Raiders, it could have been worse.
I get not wanting to sit thru three hours of the Raiders, but seems like there were other ways to get out of it.
From Butt Fumble to fumble butt. 😕
This is stunning…really he was an awful quarterback…but got a second chance for a successful career and now he throws it away for no apparent reason
I hope he and the other individual recover and fix their ills. All are welcome to give themselves to Christ and find forgiveness.
Thanks for putting up the photo of him in an Eagles uniform. Kick us when we’re down.
That photo represents the Jets’ kit from when Sanchez was playing.
The Jets have wings on their helmets?
The picture is clearly of him in a Jets uniform.
There’s two different pictures for me. On the PFR homepage, he’s in an Eagles uniform but once you click on the article, the picture is of him in a Jets uniform.
[Insert butt fumble joke here]
The 69 year old who Sanchez violently assaulted has filed a lawsuit against him
and Fox sports. Sanchez will probably serve a few years in prison. Fox will probably fine him too, Throw your career away for a few beers
Do as we say, not what we do…… It’s still another morality example. They plaster their message in end zones, commercials, hats, hoodies, and helmets. too bad when it means something, this is how they conduct themselves?
Maybe I’m confused, did Fox Sports stab this guy? What the heck are they being sued for?
I found this in another article:
“The man that Sanchez allegedly attacked has since filed a lawsuit against both him and Fox, according to both TMZ and CBS4 Indy’s Max Lewis. He is suing Sanchez for assault and battery, and Fox for negligent hiring, retention and supervision. He is seeking an unspecified amount of damages.”
Good luck with the “suing Fox” part. Can you imagine the mayhem if everybody could successfully sue every criminal’s employers for “negligent hiring?” I mean… maybe he can prove that Fox hired him even though Sanchez specifically said he intended to get drunk and assault an old man sometime in the future…
Yea lol I was gonna say… you can literally sue every employer then if this stuff sticks
You kind of already can, almost. Companies get sued for actions of their employees all the time, even those that explicitly violate their rules or codes of conduct. Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn’t, but it has led to this idea that people are somewhat responsible for the actions of others in legal sense.
In a practical sense, companies are the only ones with enough assets to pay out these lawsuits, so they become the only real targets when they happen.
Or potentially Fox Sports will settle the case before it goes to trial for significantly less than what they are being sued for just to avoid the bad publicity and sweep it under the rug. Whether it’s dismissed or settled this will probably be the last time the general public is aware Fox sports is involved but maybe he gets an extra check.
