Week 17 saw the Jets’ disappointing end to the season continue. Attention will soon turn to free agency and the draft for first-year general manager Darren Mougey, but it remains to be seen if Aaron Glenn will be retained for 2026.
Glenn’s first season as a head coach has not gone according to plan, especially in recent weeks. The Jets are in the midst of a four-game losing streak. Their margin of defeat in those contests has been 24, 28, 23 and 32 points. New York currents sits 30th in the NFL in points allowed despite Glenn’s background as a defensive coordinator.
Of course, the decision to trade away cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams led to a decrease in expectations on that side of the ball for the second half of the campaign. Nevertheless, the Jets’ struggles in that regard led to DC Steve Wilks being fired. Glenn’s job security was viewed as being uncertain at that point, although a more recent report indicated he will remain in place for next season.
The 53-year-old’s job security is still a talking point at this time, however. Outkick’s Armando Salguero writes Glenn is not safe in the wake of his team’s underwhelming finish to the season. Glenn joined New York on a five-year deal following his tenure leading the Lions’ defense. Moving on after just one campaign would thus come as a surprise even with the team sitting at 3-13. Glenn’s latest comments on the matter point to continued support coming from owner Woody Johnson.
“I do know there’s a belief in me,” Glenn said of Johnson (via Salguero). “I do know I believe in him. That’s why I’m glad I took this job, is because of ownership and what he’s about… I’m disappointed. I know he’s disappointed. So, now we’ve got to figure out what we do to make sure that we get over that hump and move forward.”
Improved play in many respects will be required for the Jets to bounce back in 2026. At least one change will take place on the sidelines when Wilks’ full-time replacement is named. Other moves affecting the coaching staff could be made soon, and Glenn’s standing in the organization will remain something to watch closely through the final week of the campaign.

I didn’t see an impressive D when he was in Detroit. The O carried the Lions.
His defenses sucked when he was in Detroit
the d wasn’t bad, but it benefitted from a great O. A game script where they were facing the pass more often than not, and a top draft pick in AH.
anyone who watched football closely could have told you this hire was awful and not work out.
he needs to go back to being a DC or college coach and get that experience leading a full team as its voice.
To me, a winless season would warrant this kind of discussion. I’d give AG another season.
Fans of other AFC teams would like to see him get an even longer-term guarantee.
OK so explain to me how this mess is Glenn’s fault? You trade your 2 All Pro Defensive guys for draft picks. You sign a QB for 40 million bucks and decide after like 5 games you want to eat that money and get rid of him. Especially when you knew the warts he had and the need for a specialized offense to make him effective when you had none of those parts on the roster. An owner who makes stupid statements and throws people under the bus at will when he’s responsible for hiring them. Look I have no idea whether Glenn can be an NFL HC or not but neither do they and to blame him for this is just another case of this team being perpetually confused and lost. It’s a ship on the ocean with no rudder. And has been for quite some time now. Wow. No wonder people make jokes about them.
Well, Glenn picked that QB, so that would be on him, right? He really hasn’t shown much, even in respect to Johnson’s meddling. Glenn’s also out on his backup QB, and is now starting a rookie to “evaluate”, but hasn’t done anything to maximize that rookie’s chances to succeed (especially important considering that rookie has not been very good overall-you’d think that’s if that were the case, they should have just started Taylor, or cut Taylor altogether). The defense wasn’t good before the Gardner and Williams trades, either, so it’s not like there was this Saleh-esque collapse after five weeks of good defense.
Still, you do wonder if Glenn just hasn’t had enough time. It has only been one season of a rebuild, after all, and it’s doubtful that he’s had enough time to even implement most of what he wants. The question that you remain with, though, is what his end product looks like. After, say, three or four years of building and then fine-tuning the Glenn roster and scheme, what do the Jets look like? If you believe in that, you have to keep him, because no coach is going to have it the way they want it after one year.
For me personally, I just don’t see much to suggest that this will be a top ten type of team under Glenn. I could be mistaken, but he just seems too inflexible to ever be an adaptive coach. I have no real inclination on Mougey; some of his trades seem good, but it’s easier to trade away gems that you already have than it is to turn those returns into your own gems. It seems like they’re reworking the culture, but I wonder how much of it is building a winning culture and how much of it is just “their way” (if that makes sense). Everyone knows that there will be-should be-struggles on the way, but players need to see wins to buy in. Good effort in losses (which we haven’t seen) can keep players hopeful, but they need to see follow through with wins. On a loss and upheaval weary team like the Jets, it only gets harder to change that.
That’s why some of the veterans were mad with how Glenn treated Rodgers-it wasn’t just disrespect to a veteran player, it was a sign of resignation to another rebuild. Glenn really needed to follow up on that with some positive momentum, and he hasn’t; firing Wilks didn’t help with that, either. It was a tough assignment, and it just seems to me that Glenn wasn’t ready to foresee the importance of immediate returns in that process. Will he able to get results later, either in New York or elsewhere, as a HC? I don’t know. I’d love to see a former player rise in the ranks to be a successful coach, but it seems like he’s unprepared too often in my sideline view.
Id like to see what Aaron Glenn can do not having Fields as his Qb
Personally
I’d call the Texans about Davis Mills and give him a shot. He’s shown flashes. Also ask for Christian Kirk in the trade
At # 3 – Francis Mauigoa OT Miami
At # 18 – Kaedyn Proctor OT Alabama
I’d double up on tackles to protect Mills. If he succeeds great if he doesn’t you’re in line for a QB in 2027 and have tackles in place
2nd round I’d double up on DL
Carl Banks from Florida
Christian Miller Georgia
Wilson, Mitchell, Kirk, Taylor
In the 4th round id take a chance on Carson Beck QB Miami
You might be overthinking this
I really wanna see the jets be good in my life time
The Jets already have tackles in place, especially on the right side. It’s one of the few things they *don’t* need.
Not to mention that Proctor is frequently projected at G and the fact that they already had a 370 Lb. failure in Becton that they’re still trying to live down. Plus from what I’ve heard he won’t be there at 18 anyway. If somebody can slim him down he might turn into something but I’ve seen a few busts on Alabama OL in the past.
Jets are projected to lose John Simpson and Vera Tucker to free agency opening G spot for Prcotor. He’s listed as a tackle which is why I put OT
Myers wasn’t very good at C this year so moving Tippman back to center and putting Mauigoa at LG would also be a a choice they have.
However you line your guys up you need to protect the QB and open up the running game
I personally think taking a tackle makes more sense than a guard at times cause you can always shift them inside to G if they don’t make it as tackles. Course if you have a Quentin Nelson or Zach Martin prospect take the G.
Tippman to C
Proctor replaces Simpson who’s set to hit FA along with Vera Tucker
Mauigoa replaces Tippman at LG
They’ll have choices how they wanna line guys up on the oline but protecting your QB and opening up the running game should be the goal however they choose to address it.
I think he deserves another few seasons, im not saying this because im a patriots fan
Another few seasons?? Are you high!!! He’ll be lucky to survive through next season if he doesn’t get the ax this season
If he doesn’t last the first season then the guy who hired him has to go with him for making an obvious mistake.
Jets should retain Glenn for at least one more season. Their QB situation was so bad that even Vince Lombardi wouldn’t have turned a winning record for Jets this year. Heck, Andy Reid just had double digit loss season this year with Patrick Mahomes as his QB because the Chiefs had terrible supporting cast for Mahomes for this year.
Jets also will have to compete with Raiders in hiring a quality head coach who is willing to coach a rebuilding team should they fire Glenn. And frankly Raiders are more desirable destination than the Jets. They don’t have Woody Johnson as owner, and they have more building block players on the team.
And Glenn has shown that he’s a fiery coach who’s not afraid to chew out players and coaches whom he deemed as not giving max effort. Rebuilding team like Jets needs a passionate coach like Glenn. Plus Glenn is former Jets player who actually loves the team. Give Glenn Year 2 minimum.
sbmcintosh36@gmail.com Exactly how are the Raiders more desirable?
They have 2 good players and that’s it, Jets have good young OL, Wilson and million picks the next 2 years with lots of cap space. The owners are basically dumb and dumber so that’s a wash .
They traded away two of their three best players and lost the third to injury, then had an undrafted rookie starting at QB. Was he supposed to wave a magic wand?
Pete Carroll will be fired from the Raiders shortly so a potential reunion with the Jets might be causing Glenn some concerns 🙂
Yes, Sauce and Q were traded but they wouldn’t have made big difference in 30 point losses. They were bad before Sauce and Q left. Just another excuse. Then there is the “we have a plan” nonsense. Cut your losses.
