APRIL 19: ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler confirms there is a belief around the league that Arizona is indeed open to moving down from No. 3. Adding capital for a potential move up the board to land Ty Simpson late in the first round could prove to be a particularly attractive approach for the Cardinals.
APRIL 16: The Cardinals hold the No. 3 pick in next week’s draft, the same slot as their original position in the 2023 draft. That year, they traded down to the 12th pick — before coming back to No. 6 overall for Paris Johnson Jr.
The Cardinals may make a similar move this year. They are considered a strong candidate to move down from the No. 3 pick, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. It could be an especially valuable selection in a draft class that is viewed as thin on elite talent that drops sharply by the middle of the first round and plateaus into the second round.
The Raiders are expected to take Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza first with the Jets deciding between Ohio State’s Arvell Reese and Texas Tech’s David Bailey for No. 2. Whomever does not end up in New York could be a target for teams trading up to Arizona’s pick.
The Cardinals also have holes to fill all over their roster, so they may prefer trading back and targeting the strong Day 2 depth of this class. Their wide variety of needs is one of the reasons they are seen as a wild card in this year’s draft, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
“Arizona Cardinals GM Monti Ossenfort is known to be willing to make a draft-day deal,” Jones writes. “You’ll hear plenty about teams being willing to trade down in this year’s draft, and I think the Cardinals are serious contenders to do just that. Looking around the league, folks believe the draft begins at No. 3 and no one seems to have a very good sense of what Arizona will do.”
Ossenfort could conceivable target any position except for cornerback and tight end with his premium picks, and the Cardinals still need some depth at the latter position. That will allow him to take a true ‘best player available’ approach as he attempts to rebuild the roster for new head coach Mike LaFleur.

This is shaping up to be one of those drafts where you could gain by doing something weird. In other words the guy the Bears probably want the Safety Theinemen will be gone by 25. So you trade up to like 12 by offering one of their seconds. Then trade back down and add another second that was higher than one of theirs and end up with 2 higher picks and your guy. I could see something like that happening with a lot of teams. Lot’s of unease about this draft might make for a bunch of moving around. There isn’t a lot of sure fire stuff to be found in this round.
You think a team is going to trade up in the first round during the draft and then trade back down in that same window before picking?
I said it would be weird but doable. If you did it right and ended up with 2 higher picks than you had why not? Is it the word ” Weird” That’s throwing you? LOL I think this is going to be a strange draft and round 1 might take 2 days to finish. It might last until midnight.
Hey Unclemike I understand and appreciate your comment but why would a team take the Bears offer when another team is offering higher picks like you said?
Well for one I never said that another team was offering more and they should take the Bears offer? Where did I say that? Uh nowhere right? That would be dumb. But the Bears have other things to offer like Kmet, Kyler Gordon, and Dexter to name a few. The Bears have to reduce Cap, Are expected to draft a DT and a S and have to clear out around 10 million of Cap space just to sign who they draft. The Bears will be active because they have to be. They have Turner, Dexter, Jarret and Street for DT and are supposed to draft one. Jarrett is unmovable and Turner is coming off an ACL and probably is too. You can’t trade guys you just signed so that makes the only guy to go would be Dexter.Bears have JJ, Bryant, Stevenson, Gordon, Cam Lewis, Blackwell, Terrell Smith, Zah Frazier? so it’s over crowded to say the least. They need money and more picks because they don’t have a 5th or 6th. Pretty sure Poles and Johnson will be active and busy.
The Bears managed to fleece the Panthers in a recent draft but I pray they don’t let it go to their head and try to impress everyone with some hocus pocus like you’re describing. Rebuilding their defense is all they should be focused on.
I’m just saying that this draft really has nobody you can honestly say this guy is can’t miss and that includes Mendoza on down. I think there is going to be a lot going on. Early an often.
Contrastly, the lack of sure fire, can’t miss prospects makes me wonder how much teams really want to move up. I can’t help but feel that players like Bailey and Reese would go 10-15 in other drafts.
Actually, Arizona traded the 3rd overall pick to Houston, who took Will Anderson, and received their pick (12th overall), and a ‘24 1st rd pick. Then Arizona traded with Detroit back up to 6th overall to take Paris Johnson, and Detroit moved to 12th overall taking J Gibbs.
I havent watched football in a while, trying to get up to speed. Does Aneas Williams still play?
Yes. On Madden 2020.
Well, as God told Homer Simpson …. the Cardinals moved from St Louis….toi Arizona!!
Yes Williams still plays at the Canton Ohio retirement castle
Also Andre wadsworth is considered the greatest player of all time
Cardinals acquire:
– Tanner McKee QB
– Eagles 1st round pick (#23)
– Eagles 3rd round pick (#98)
Eagles acquire:
– Budda Baker SS
– Cardinals 1st round pick (#3)
Eagles select: Avril Reese, DE
Cardinals select: Kaydn Proctor, RT
We know Howie is gonna make a move, he always does. This one is not too far fetched.
Stick to baseball bud
I don’t think the Cardonals would do that deal even if you took Budda out.
It’s pretty far fetched.
Only from philthy would you get something asinine as this..
It’s a swing, and I could see Howie trying it…if the Eagles had a player that they really needed at #3. Who would be his trade be for? Tate, to make up for a Brown trade? Love, to overlap with Barkley after a down year? Bailey/Reese, to try to solidify an uneven edge rush? I can’t see who Philly needs this badly to do it. As it stands, they’re giving up a few coveted assets, but it’s still a good deal to jump up that high. I’m just not sure that they’re that desperate.
As far as Arizona goes, they’re going to probably want at least one more good pick, here. Could that be next year’s first from Philly? That could do it in what is expected to be a better class. The thing is, the Eagles’ picks are going to be lower if all goes as expected. This year’s is 28th, next year’s is probably similar. If the Eagles sweetened the pot by adding that, and probably one more good pick or player, it might work. The Cardinals are also losing Baker. By itself, it isn’t a deal breaker, because he’s older now and no longer cheap, but that’s still a valuable player that will need to be replaced. He definitely has more value comparatively to a win now team at his age than he does to Arizona, but that’s still doesn’t mean that the Cards are desperate to move him for the sake of moving him.
I think that it’s just short of being a good way for the Eagles to get to #3, I’m just not sure who they would need so badly to do it, and I’m not sure that Arizona gets the best value back for what they’re giving up. Still, it’s not as far off to me as it is to others. It just doesn’t seem quite there in its current state.
Correction-I wrote “28th” instead of “23rd”. My mistake.
AZ needs to trade back and get picks for next year’s class & then try for a QB again. Horrible roster.
Poor Ty Simpson. A lot of people here aren’t sold on him, of course, but going to Arizona pretty much ensures that he’s going to have a much more difficult time trying to develop in a defensively stacked division…starting for by far its worst team (a team that has lacked a winning culture for years to go along with that).
who is going to buy season tickets in AZ to watch Brissett or Minshew and a washed up John Conner?
