A report from earlier this month indicated “serious” extension talks have yet to begin in the case of C.J. Stroud. Predictions from outside the Texans’ building also point to no deal being worked out this summer.
There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding this situation, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports. He adds, though, that some observers around the NFL “loosely expect” Stroud to play out the 2026 season before any potential Houston deal is finalized. The Texans recently exercised Stroud’s $25.9MM fifth-year option.
That decision came as no surprise, and it ensured the former No. 2 pick would remain under team control through 2027. A commitment beyond that point would make Stroud one of the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks, but it remains to be seen if Houston will be comfortable proceeding on that front. After a sensational rookie season, Stroud’s production has taken a step back despite the Texans continuing to reach the divisional round of the playoffs.
The team’s elite defense has played a central role in that success, and a pair of big-money extensions on that side of the ball were recently worked out. Stroud’s 2023 draft classmate Will Anderson Jr. now leads the way in terms of edge rush compensation with an average annual value of $50MM on his new deal. Any second Stroud contract would surpass that figure given the nature of the QB market (which is currently topped by Dak Prescott at $60MM annually). The salary cap has continued to rise since Prescott’s 2024 deal was signed, while Stroud is eight years younger than the Cowboys’ QB1.
Those factors will no doubt weigh heavily once negotiations begin to ramp up. However, it is yet to be seen when that will be the case. The Texans have previously been linked to waiting out the 2026 campaign before hammering out a monster extension. If that stance holds, Stroud’s performance next season will be worth watching closely as his value will be determined in no small part by his output. A return to his previous form could allow the Texans to break through in the AFC playoffs.
On the other hand, poor showings by team and/or player in this case could justify a patient approach on Houston’s part. A commitment of some kind to Stroud should still be expected, but the matter of timing continues to loom as an interesting storyline.

I think they’re doing it for the most obvious reason. Tough end of the season last year with the performance in the playoffs and they want to see more before they make a big commitment
But they are also doing it because they can. CJ is the kind of person that is not going to take this personally. Is not going to throw a fit and hold out or make threats and not come into camp. He will continue to show up and do the best job he possibly can. His character and attitude are the key to this decision
I think you’re first point started to touch on the real reason. Stroud had a good rookie season and has regressed every year since. I don’t think the Texans think about how nice a guy he is when deciding to wait and see if he can actually read NFL defenses at game speed and demonstrate in-game growth before committing >$50M/yr.
Stroud (like most players) is going to follow the negotiating script that his agent thinks will be most effective. If he’s told to throw a fit…he’ll throw a fit. If he’s told to threaten a hold out…he’ll threaten a hold out. There’s no point in even hiring an agent if you just plan to ignore his advice.
He hasn’t proven that he is worth that mega-extension yet and has one more shot to do it. Outside of his rookie year, he’s been an average to slightly above-average QB and should not be breaking any contractual records for his next deal. The defense has been carrying the overall team production
Why did they fire the OC from his rookie year? He’s never been the same since.
They fired him because of Stroud’s regression in his sophomore year. Players were not happy with his inability to adjust his offensive schemes. So he didn’t just lose the faith of the coaching staff/ownership, he also lost the players
Traded Stroud & Waddle (plus Rico Dowdle & Kaleb Johnson) for the 1.02 and some 2027 mid rnd picks in my Dynasty League Rookie Draft this past week, Stroud’s regression each season and especially the 2025 Playoffs showed me enough to move on. His awful, selfish, reckless turnover plays in both the Steeler & Pats games were enough…
Bye bye C.J. and always gimpy Waddle, hello to my Dynasty Squad FERNANDO MENDOZA RAIIIIIDDEERRSSSS!!!
Waiting to see if he’s actually good
Yea, let’s hold off on that big contract, I think we’ve saw that scenario play out horribly for a few other teams that pulled the trigger a little too hastily, he’d better have a big year…..and that’s probably unlikely
Would be the Tua situation if they paid him now. Just bc your a starting qb doesn’t mean you’re worth the 50 plus million a year contract
