49ers Fear Jimmy Garoppolo Has Torn ACL

The 49ers fear starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a serious knee injury in Week 3’s contest against the Chiefs, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted following the game that an ACL tear is the fear for Garoppolo, and an MRI could confirm the news by Monday.

Garoppolo took a hit while running along the sideline in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game and looked to have injured his left knee. Trainers escorted him off the field via cart, and he was quickly ruled out for the remainder of Week action.

Losing Garoppolo would be a devastating blow for a 49ers team that had playoff aspirations entering the 2018 campaign. San Francisco has already lost one if its projected offensive focal points — free agent addition Jerick McKinnon — for the year after he suffered a torn ACL during training camp. Another knee injury, this time to Garoppolo, could further derail San Francisco’s postseason hopes.

With Garoppolo sidelined, the 49ers turned to backup C.J. Beathard for the remainder of their loss to the Chiefs. Beathard, a third-round pick in the 2017 draft, started five games for San Francisco before it acquired Garoppolo near last year’s trade deadline. The Iowa product completed 55% of his passes for 1,430 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions, and posted the second-lowest passer rating among NFL quarterbacks with at least 200 attempts.

The 49ers picked up Garoppolo from the Patriots in exchange for a second-round pick last November, and subsequently inked him to a five-year, $137.5MM extension after he won all five of his starts in the Bay Area. Through two starts this season, Garoppolo had managed 467 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Trying to find a video of the injury, heard it was non contact injury. Those are never good and usually an acl. I know that from experience.

I’ve never seen anything like what’s going on with this team. So many injuries every week, insane! For a team that couldn’t tackle, dropping passes, got ripped off by the refs and dealt with more injuries again they still were able get back in the game which says a lot but it Jimmy G really does have a serious knees injury they might as well wave the white flag because their back up is garbage.

If they still think they can make a playoff push, Foles, and probably Tyrod Taylor are available.

I thought if I saw a headline “Jimmy Goes Down” it would be a movie with his girlfriend.

The Bethard era starts now….tough break for the 9ers….in my opinion they have to try and trade for a qb, CJ Bethard is not even a stop gap….

The problem there is that the Niners have allocated 16.21% of their cap to the QB position already. That is the highest allocation % of any team. The league average for the position this season is 9.77%.

Maybe the Bucs want to trade high on Fitzpatrick.

Let’s be real, they won’t stay on top in that division. What else, they need to see what Winston is and whether or not they want him next year. Trade high on Fitz, get something good maybe.

I agree they won’t stay on top the division but we already know what Winston is, a QB who peaked in college.

Any team that finds itself in a division with 3 teams that are attempting a rebuild should dominate. The real test will come in the playoffs when they have to face more formidable opponents.

They are passing the formidable team test today and will get another shot thursday

Those meaningless wins at the end of last season appear to have raised expectations too high. I still like the young talent the Niners are adding to the defensive side of the ball. Better days are ahead but you’ll have to be patient a bit longer.
