NFL Owners Eyeing NBA’s Adam Silver?

Could Adam Silver go from the pages of Hoops Rumors to Pro Football Rumors? NFL owners have asked Silver if he would be willing to switch leagues and replace Roger Goodell as commissioner, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com. For what it’s worth, Silver claims he has given no thought to the possibility.

I’ll just say I have not given it any thought,” Silver said. “I feel very fortunate to be in this position. As a longtime fan, as a longtime league employee, the opportunity to become the commissioner of this league was beyond anything I even ever dreamed of as a kid. I’ve loved every day I’ve been in this job, and I think there’s nothing but enormous opportunity ahead for this league. And ultimately, I realize I’m just passing through like every player who’s gone through this league and ultimately like every owner, and I feel an enormous obligation to the fans and to this greater NBA family to do my best and try my hardest every day. But that’s where 100 percent of my focus is.

The NBA has gained serious traction under Silver, but the NFL still reigns supreme in American sports. A move to football would represent a major step up for the young exec and would likely mean a larger salary.

In Silver’s five years as the NBA’s head honcho, league revenues have increased from $4.8 billion to roughly $9.1 billion. Meanwhile, team valuations have shot up 267%. Those results have some NFL owners salivating and there are some owners who would like to move on from the bad PR associated with Goodell.

Of course, the NFL has also seen enormous growth under Goodell, so it’s far from certain that they’ll give him the hook before his contract runs out after the end of the 2024 season. Instead, Silver could be a potential successor for Goodell – his own deal with the NBA expires after the 2023-24 campaign.

Never gonna happen. Nba is better and less controversial than the nfl

    • jawn

It’s “never gonna happen” because your opinion is that the NBA is better than the NFL?

      A+ analysis there, Alex.

      • sidewinder11

Same can be said for the Patriots in the NFL. Baseball is the only sport where any team can realistically win any given game.

        • kenleyfornia2

Pats only win it in even years and lets be real this very well could have been the last time.

          • TheTruth12

“Pats only win it in even years” but 4 of the six Super Bowls have been odd years… let’s be real there’s a much better chance that this wasn’t the last time, as long as Brady is on the field and BB on the sidelines they’re the easy favorite. In fact they have the best Super Bowl odds. Football just isn’t your thing kid

            • kenleyfornia2

Lol your telling me football isn’t my thing, but you think 4 of 6 Pats titles are in odd years. I have news for you. This was the 2018 NFL season they just won in. The 2019 leauge year doesn’t start until march. And who tf bring up titles from 10 years ago when discussing parity today. You clearly have no clue what your talking about.

              • TheTruth12

Yes holy crap you google Patriots Super Bowl wins it doesn’t say “2018, 2016, 2014” it says 2019, 2017, 2015. You said they win even years, the year and season are 2 different things really not that f*cking hard. I would say go back to baseball but you don’t know what you’re talking about there either most incompetent person on here.

                • kenleyfornia2

Your life must suck so much to be triggered by someone on an online sports forum and be such a stickler for the difference between year and season. Pull that stick out of your behind. Look at the Patriots super bowl banners they hang up in their won stadium. Look at what the Eagles banner says. The fact you are so triggered by this is comical.

                    • qbass187

I think we can all just agree that the Patriots are amazing and we’re all damn lucky to be here to see their reign of dominance.

                • Afk711

The Broncos are the 2015 super bowl champions. The Eagles are the 2017 super bowl champions. Thats a fact. Only little kids on Madden time think New England are the 2019 champions.

Sidewinder, that’s the stupidest comment I’ve ever heard. The Warriors are just bad for any fan. The Patriots now, this league is set up for parity, throughout the year they are never an overwhelming team, other than 2007. It is pure coaching that wins there. Take Brady and Gronk, all you have is a bunch of good players with heart.

Goodwill makes between 30-50 million dollars a year. Silver makes about 10. I’m sure Adam is thrilled to see this rumor floating around, but he just signed a 5 year extension in 2018

      • HubcapDiamondStarHalo

If Silver is legitimately interested, he’ll find a way to break a contract to at least triple his salary…

        • crosseyedlemon

Placing a guy who breached his contract in charge is a good idea? Owners and players could renege on contract agreements with impunity then…claiming they are only doing what the commissioner did.

    • whynot101

Everyone loves LBJ manipulating the refs, getting coaches fired, and unable to win without forming super rosters . Without MJ nba is for lemmings, look at sorry ass bulls now

Compare their salaries, money talks. That’s it that’s all.

In the immortal words of Dr. Evil, “Riiiiiiiight.”

Silver isn’t leaving that gig to work for the horrible NFL owners.

    • connfyoozed

Silver does look just a little bit like Dr. Evil, now that you mention it.

  4. em650r

The NFL needs to take the political stuff out of the game. Clean out the garbage of these holdouts and contract stalls and get better refs

    • Stillers12
      Stillers12

Political stuff has always been “in the game”, whether it be the NFL or any other sporting event. Holdouts will continue, just like trade demands and everything else. People deserve to be paid what they are worth to the league. No one ever complains about the owners, when they are the real greedy ones.

I do agree that the NFL needs full-time Referees.

      • jb19

Refs will still suck. There will be missed calls all of the time. Remember the “replacement refs” and Mike Tirico explains the GD rules every 5 minutes on MNF a couple years back? Well, I bet the replacement refs would have thrown a flag on Nickel Robby-Coleman’s PI/personal foul. Being full time compared to “part time” won’t make a difference. They will still suck/get things wrong.

  5. goldenmisfit

Why? So he can add this absolutely ridiculous tampering roll into the NFL? In the end BA you cannot even mention a Nother player from another team without the NBA wanting to investigate and find you a crap load of money.

  6. forwhomjoshbelltolls

One of the best things about the greater Pittsburgh area is the NBA literally doesn’t exist here.

As I obviously don’t like or follow the NBA, I have no idea, what has Silver done (if anything) to increase the league’s popularity.

Or does he just run the league LeBron plays in and reaps the benefits?

    • connfyoozed

Yeah, I grew up in Pittsburgh and was a big basketball fan, but I couldn’t have cared less that Pittsburgh didn’t have a team. Pittsburgh and Cleveland will both always be cities where only 3 pro sports are going to survive; Pittsburgh tried pro hoops a few times and it never worked, same for Cleveland and pro hockey. Not having to constantly read or hear about NBA drama was for me a good thing.

  7. Guest617

goofdell’s a clown – paul tagliabue was good for the league, owners, players, fans, etc

  8. Phattey

Anyone is better than the commissioner who constantly gets booed every time he steps foot anywhere

  9. jb19

Adam Silver’s face makes him non-hirable… also, won’t be able to replicate the NBAs success internationally with the NFL. Where a lot of the growth has come from.

  10. HubcapDiamondStarHalo

I can only think of one high profile human in America who would do a worse job than Goodell…

      • cka2nd

Condoleezza Rice? She’s a huge football fan, and I think there’s occasionally been speculation linking her to Goddell’s job.

Wait, are you talking about Hilary?
