Eagles To Add UDFA QB Jamie Newman

The Eagles did not use one of their 2021 draft picks on a quarterback, but they will add at least one via undrafted free agency. Former Wake Forest and Georgia passer Jamie Newman will sign with Philadelphia, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.

Newman transferred from Wake Forest to Georgia but did not end up playing for the Bulldogs, opting out of last season. He worked a the Demon Deacons’ starter in 2019, throwing 26 touchdown passes and averaging 7.9 yards per attempt. The 6-foot-4 passer did participate in the Senior Bowl, however. Scouts Inc. graded Newman 184th among this year’s prospects.

Philly not selecting a quarterback clears the way for Jalen Hurts. While ownership was believed to be behind Hurts receiving a true opportunity this season — rather than being pushed in a quarterback competition — it was somewhat surprising the Eagles did not select a QB. Newman will join Hurts and Joe Flacco, whom the Eagles signed this offseason, on the team’s depth chart.

Although five quarterbacks went in this draft’s top 15 picks, only 10 were selected in total. Of the Senior Bowl participants, Newman joined Arkansas’ Feleipe Franks in not being drafted.
