Last month, Giants owner John Mara acknowledged the team’s need for a quarterback and said the front office could target the position either via free agency or the draft. With more time to reflect, it sounds like the organization is considering adding players from both of those buckets.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler expects the Giants to sign a veteran quarterback and select a rookie at that position in the draft. Fowler notes there’s urgency for coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen to get this right, as the duo’s job status could be tied to their handling of the QBs room in 2025.
It’s obviously not a profound concept to pair a bridge QB with a young signal caller, but it sounds like the Giants have their eye on someone more significant than a one-year veteran stopgap. Fowler believes that free agent Russell Wilson and trade option Matthew Stafford could be targets for the Giants, and there are plenty of additional options that will or could be available (including Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, Aaron Rodgers, and Kirk Cousins).
None of those options will truly change the long-term trajectory of the franchise, but they should still command a pretty penny. Fortunately for the Giants, they have some financial wiggle room to compete in a bidding war. The team is projected to have more than $44MM in cap space, and they could easily carve out additional breathing room by releasing players or restructuring contracts.
Armed with the third-overall pick, the Giants should also be in prime position to take one of the draft’s top QB prospects. While neither Shedeur Sanders nor Cameron Ward are considered blue-chip prospects, the Giants wouldn’t have to be entirely reliant on their rookie if they add a veteran atop the depth chart.
Interestingly, the Giants are turning to one of their offensive stars for opinions on draft options. Wideout Malik Nabers told Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post that the Giants have reached out to him about his thoughts on the quarterback prospects.
“I’m paying attention to it with the eyes of a hawk,” Nabers said. “[The Giants] have been keeping me in the loop, whether it’s who I like. They always ask me questions like that. When I watch [Sanders and Ward], I pick the things I like about both of them and go back and tell them.”
So…They think they can copy the Vikings and win the NFC E next year?
I’m sure in Mara’s deluded mind he thinks exactly this.
Just get Jameis Winston and tank. Use the #3 pick on the best player available or trade back for extra picks. They have holes at almost every position on the field aside from maybe RB (Tracy is young and good enough), NT (Lawrence), and EDGE (Burns and Thibodeaux). No need to force a QB pick on Ward or Sanders.
Trading back seems like the best move at this point.
Grab a couple extra picks, and take the best OL/CB available. Maybe a WR and safety with later picks. As you said, so many needs but in particular the OL and secondary needs a lot of work. And hope to hit on a #2 or 3 WR to start complimenting Nabers.
One of Graham…..who would be the most efficient pick given their lousy interior defense and habitat of giving up 5 yds+ a carry, Hunter who would be a hawk at corner and a gadget player on offense for 10-15 plays a game, or Carter who on the edge would allow us to discard some of the pretender edges we currently have and give Burns a player to pair with that could wreak havoc on offenses…..neither QB’s are worth the #3 pick…..
I wouldn’t pick Carter unless you wanna see another great player leave and go to the Eagles after his rookie contract
If Carter is actually that good, watching him perform for 5 years on the Giants and helping them back to relevance would be worth it…but point well taken….many commenters feel as we do that the Giants must retain their home grown players who perform and prevent them from defecting to other teams when its time to pay up…..but….Howie is playing a dangerous game with all this deferred contract money and who’s to say the Eagles will be relevant in 5 years……
I honestly was slightly worried about the cap myself cuz they eventually have to pay a bill. But the cap keeps climbing so drastically that I don’t think it’s gonna matter honestly. Eventually every team does some kind of retool so it’ll catch them eventually. But they have a wide open window. As for Carter I’m mainly poking fun but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a college player entering the draft be so outspoken and such an open cheerleader of their favorite NFL team before. It seems like a lot of guys actually avoid it. He’s already been interviewed saying his dream is to one day play for Philly. I just think no matter who gets him he’s eventually going to leave. But you’re right, 5 years is a long time. A lot of football in there.
This is not a great draft for trading back because there will be multiple teams trying to do that. In Nashville, where they’re in dire need of a QB, the thinking is that neither Ward or Sanders is worth the first pick and that trading back is the best course- IF they could find a willing partner. The return gets smaller the more teams that want to do the same thing… There’s gonna be a number of them.
rct…that’s a strategy that would lose you.your job. and I’m pretty sure that Schoen and Daboll would probably both like to hang onto their jobs that pay them millions of dollars. I know I would. the Eagles just won the title and the Commanders are ascending…it’s not the time to act like a bunch of chumps. the Giants only move is to add Hunter or Carter at 3, bring in a veteran QB and try to be competitive or risk losing your job. Schoenfeld and Daboll have no other choice.
I mean, I’m a fan. I don’t care about Daboll’s job or Schoen’s job. I want what’s best for the team. I don’t want to try to be “competitive” in 2025. They’ve been trying that for a decade now. Third-worst team in the league but one of the highest cap numbers. Awful. They NEED to tank. They have like four or five good players on the entire roster. Trade back and tank for Arch.
I say give fields a shot and draft cam Ward. Fields will win you more games than Drew lock and Daniel jones combined especially if you address run game and blocking
Can Ward sounds like an immature kid (punk) with his threat to punish teams for passing on him in the draft…..from a guy who hasn’t played a down in the NFL…..character does matter at QB….anyone notice that a QB like Hurts just doesn’t say a lot but obviously leads on his team……
I think cam is saying that as a chip on his shoulder. His play style won a lot of games in college I think he has talent for sure and could mesh well with Nabers
Just don’t think that a “chippy attitude” is going to go over well with Marra and Tisch the owners…..as much as they want to win, they also don’t want to be on the front page of tabloids all across the NY metro area every day with a kid who talks too much about the wrong stuff to the press……attitude and leadership does matter and as much as Nabors wants to win, the Giants need a leader not a kid who hasn’t played a down in the NFL making off the cuff threats….and Cam, wouldn’t have been a first round pick in last years draft when comparing tools and probably would be a day 2 pick from a QB needy team…..there are other needs that Carter, Graham, or Hunter solves for this team other than a big mouthed kid….
New York market they always in news pages. Just mainly for losing haha
Tabloids are what your grandfather read. Social media is how people follow the NFL these days. And the Giants’ form makes it clear they’re the joke team in New York’s NFL world.
Both jets and giants are a joke. If cam or sanders goes the pressure to perform will be immediate
I would take Fields but not draft Ward. No reason to spend that draft capital on a guy you’re not 100% sold on.
Develop him BEHIND fields or maybe draft Abdul carter?
Aaron Rodgers with no trade compensation sounds like the only win-now option on an uninspiring list (Sam Darnold, Justin Fields, Aaron Rodgers, and Kirk Cousins). The Giants are not ready for a Justin Fields project (the right destination could be fine for Fields, say Harbaugh’s Ravens were something to happen to Lamar Jackson).
What an awful mess in which for the Giants to find themselves. They don’t have the offensive line to take on Sam Darnold and Darnold may not want to come back to New York.
Gardner Minshew has just become available, he’s serviceable. Tyrod Taylor is lurking about somewhere, not starting.
Minshew is not a QB1 and better suited as a QB2/supersub. Taylor is under contract to the Jets for 2025.
Let the Giants sign Rodgers — they’re so entitled they’ll think he’s the next Eli.
Team has ZERO direction…since 2017, the year they benched Eli for no reason, they have an almost identical record to the Jets. Daboll and Schoen are dead men walking. They can buy themselves one more year if they go with a rookie QB but 5-12ish (or worse) season is inevitable next year and I don’t know if Daboll is back after that regardless of who is behind center. This team is not just a QB away. They’re 3 years from contending and that’s if they find a QB. I would put money on Daboll calling plays on a different sideline elsewhere in 3 years…
The good new is baseball spring training camps are now active so we can ignore the Giants cluster@#$ until Mara realizes Schoen and Daboll are useless and replaces them.
Daboll and Schoen should’ve been sacked right after last season. They were kept on cos the Giants are the most entitled team in the NFL.
Look for Daboll to be an offensive coordinator somewhere in 2026.
The Giants offensive line issues are so bad that I don’t see how adding Matthew Stafford would be a good idea at all. You better have a mobile QB cuz whoever it is won’t have any time to throw
Any player in the upcoming draft that has to tell teams how great he is has a problem.
Absolutely…..let your skills do your talking and accept the $$$millions you’ll make be being drafted by a QB needy team……even Shadeur doesn’t threaten like this dolt.
“If you don’t draft me, that’s your fault. You’ve got to remember—you’re the same team that’s got to play me for the rest of my career, and I’ll remember that.”
I doubt that teams are all a quiver about that comment considering his career may not get past holding a clip board and then having his 5th year option declined if he even makes it to 5 years. Coming out of that football powerhouse Incarnate Word and then playing the NIL money game to Washington State then Miami doesn’t inspire confidence in anyone as to his long term success…he is a project at best and if this wasn’t such a god awful weak QB draft class he would be a third day pick at best.
This is the guy that QUIT on his team at half time after he set a record for TD passes in the first half and his Miami team lost 42-41 to Iowa State in the Pop Tart Bowl. His comments about that would be a huge red flag in my opinion. It’s all about him…
“I just think we all got what we needed out of it. They seen things that they think they need to work on … for this season coming up. And they also knew, you know, what I had on the line,” Ward said. “We feel like we’re doing what’s best for the program and myself. I mean, it was a hard decision, especially when, you know, some guys on our team didn’t play who I thought should have played. It was also, you know, those guys thought about their future the same way I thought about mine.”
If he actually got to play he would probably “Tap Out” like Anthony Richardson because he was tired and he has to think about his future.
Great story, I hadn’t hear the details. Cam Ward should go down in infamy as a quitter. Either he refuses to play the bowl game completely, or he plays the whole thing. Playing one half established Ward for this life and the hereafter as a class A jerk and a quitter.
Tenn – Shedeur Sanders
Cle – Cam Ward
NYG – Will Howard
NE – Travis Hunter
JAX – Tetoritoa McMillin
As long as Mara is involved in the running of the team we will never have a winner !!!
Under Mara, the Giants have won two Super Bowls, each time defeating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in their prime (including after the undefeated season).
