As uncertainty looms over the Trey Hendrickson situation, the Bengals have added to their edge rush in the first round. Cincinnati has selected Texas A&M defensive end Shemar Stewart with the 17th pick. Stewart will be the latest experiment we see of a player with more potential than production at the collegiate level, and the Bengals need that potential to pan out.
A 25th-ranked defense in Cincinnati, highlighted by a pass rush that finished with the eighth-fewest sacks in the league last year, was a huge reason that the team missed the playoffs while players like Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase has all-time great seasons. As Hendrickson’s future remains up in the air, Stewart’s development becomes a crucial component of the team’s success in the future.
Stewart, a former five-star recruit, failed to ever live up to his recruiting status in College Station. Over his three years at Texas A&M, Stewart didn’t become a full-time starter until 2024. Despite leading the Aggies in pressures (39) last year, he struggled to finish throughout his career, staying off the stat sheet for the most part. He totaled only 4.5 sacks in his three seasons of play, adding only 11.0 tackles for loss over that time.
New defensive coordinator Al Golden will need to tap into the potential Stewart has stored and will need to so quickly. Stewart will be expected to line up across from Hendrickson, for now. Should Hendrickson depart in any sort of fashion, Stewart will be expected to lead the edge rushing group. He’ll need to display that five-star, first-round potential as soon as possible in Cincinnati.

Nice to see his dad is a thug idiot. Clown show with that family.
What do you mean
The Thanos necklace thing was weird, but what makes him a thug?
That’s what I want to know lol
I just can’t. I don’t get this pick with everybody else that was still there.
Bengals could have a A+ Defensive line if Stewart, Murphy play up to their upsides and the Bengals work something out with Hendrickson. So far Murphy hasn’t done much and Stewart is not graded well by scouts. Not sure why the Bengals picked him, but they’re the ones paying him, not me
Radio draftnicks are laughing at this pick … 4.5 sacks in three seasons?
If these draftniks were “experts” wouldn’t they be coaches or football executives instead of being radio show hosts? As a coach and player for 50+ years I have watched quite a few kids who had immense talent be put in a system that does not play to their individual talent. So many coaches try to force their system on a kid instead of adapting to fit the player they have at the moment. The excuse of,”That’s the way I’ve always done it,” is stupid and short sided. Imagine if the coach at the time had passed on giving Kurt Warner a chance because he’s just an arena player, or had written Brock Purdy off as just a camp arm. This kid is crazy fast, has long arms and immense strength. Maybe his job was to rattle the QB so he would make mistakes and let the other guys get the sacks. Granted he has to learn to wrap a guy up when tackling him, but that’s something you can teach, but you can’t teach quickness and strength. This will be a new defense and we won’t have to suffer through Lou’s keeping veterans in the game because he didn’t like using rookies , even though the rookie might be a better player.I would hate to be lined up across from Hendrickson, Stewart, Murphy and Slaton this fall, but this is just my opinion.
I agree with your sentiments but Bugler did have him as his 9th best player overall so not everyone was as negative.
