Jordan Travis will not end up continuing as a Jets reserve quarterback into a second season. He has informed the team of an intention to retire.
The former Florida State quarterback, who suffered a gruesome ankle injury in November 2023, will land on the Jets’ reserve/retired list. Chosen in last year’s fifth round, Travis said medical personnel have advised he leave the game.
“On November 18, 2023, my life took an unexpected turn,” Travis said in a statement. “I gave everything I had to the rehab process but despite all my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer and consultation with the doctors, medical experts and my agent, I’ve been medically advised to retire from the game I love so deeply.”
Multiple updates coming out of New York indicated Travis’ rehab route had not advanced as the team hoped. Then-interim HC Jeff Ulbrich said Travis had endured multiple setbacks during his rehab, and a pre-draft offering added that the team’s former coaching staff may have played a role in the effort not going smoothly. Travis’ agent said the pressure on last year’s coaching staff led to the team rushing the rookie, and the former high-end college passer’s ankle did not respond well.
Regardless of the timeline, it certainly appears Travis suffered a career-ending injury nearly 18 months ago. That injury kept Florida State out of the 2023 College Football Playoff field, which remained a four-team bracket that year, and hurt the QB’s draft stock. While Hendon Hooker rebounded to become the Lions’ backup QB last year, after a November 2022 ACL tear affected his draft stock, Travis will not be as fortunate. Travis sustained a fractured and dislocated ankle early in a game against Division I-FCS North Alabama, and extensive fallout emerged.
Travis, who transferred from Louisville to Florida State during a six-year college stay, spent last season on the Jets’ reserve/NFI list. He ended his Seminoles career No. 1 in school history in total offense (10,655 yards) and touchdowns (99), breaking former Heisman winner Chris Weinke‘s career records. Florida State had started 10-0 on the back of its veteran starter. When Travis went down, he was sitting on a 20-2 TD:INT ratio. The Jets believed he could have been a Day 2 pick had the injury not occurred, SNY’s Connor Hughes tweets.
The Jets have Tyrod Taylor positioned as Justin Fields‘ backup. While rumors persisted the team could use a Day 2 or Day 3 pick on a passer, no move materialized. One season remains on Taylor’s contract. Second-year UDFA Adrian Martinez is also on the team’s roster at quarterback.
That sucks. Hope he’s successful in his next career.
The pressure on the staff lead to them rushing a 5th round QB coming off a horrific injury? Man things must have been really bizarre in that facility
Are you really blaming the Jets for Jordan Travis’ injury??
Woah I’m not blaming the Jets at all for the injury. I should have used quotation marks but in the article it states that the agent believes there was pressure
Oh it came across as you took the Jets “pressuring” (per his agent, AKA wanting him to play football) as the reason this injury is unrecoverable
No sir, just astonishing that an agent would think such a thing
Yeahh, agent speak is something you kind of have to take with a grain of salt. Its their job to sell their guy and paint them in the best light, even at the expense of their own team. Its likely Jets wanted him to at some point be able to return since they drafted him, but if the injury is so bad he has to retire, i dont think any amount of patience can fix his ankle. Sucks, but is what it is
Not the injury, the recovery.
What are you imagining the Jets did wrong here other than draft a meh prospect coming off a catastrophic injury?
I don’t think that was what tjeck was implying. The article states the agent said this
Correct, should have used quotation marks. Article states the agents beliefs
Ah, gotcha. I feel bad for Travis, who seems like a lovable guy. But at the same time, he had to put his whole body into passes more than like ten yards already. Spending a fifth round pick on that guy coming off a terrible injury always struck me as odd.
It’s the Jets….
Ulrich has other issues on his plate now.
Bro relax. Dude was quoting the article.
The only fate worse than being drafted by the jets is having to retire early. Jokes aside, he should be proud of the way he faced adversity while rehabbing and just being drafted in general despite his grave leg injury. God speed Jordan. I wish you luck sir on a prosperous career outside of the only thing you’ve known
Well, sadly, it seems more like now being drafted by the Jets is the kiss of death for any hopes at an extended stay in the NFL.
Man, just like the Bears, the Jets can not find themselves a QB to save their lives.
When your most recent success stories are Vinny Testaverde, a senile Brett Farve 5-6 years past his prime, and Mark Sanchez “leading” your team to the playoffs, geezus…Come on Jets, even you all are better than this…
No, they aren’t….
Do the New York Jets need to be dissolved, as an entity?
The New England Patriots deserved the equivalent of the NCAA death penalty for all their cheating.
28-3
Aaron Hernandez.
Fitzpatrick to Gesicki.
4-13 Forever.
Atleast you still have joe Namath and the butt fumble
link to youtube.com The butt fumble pretty much sums up the Jets over my 52 years of living!
Makes the decision to not take a flier on Sanders or not take a QB at all baffling
They let a much more talented but albeit equally distracting QB go in Rodgers, and youre baffled they didnt get the QB who went 1-7 against ranked teams in college? Really?
Yeah cause Fields wasn’t a distraction in Chicago constantly at odds with the coaching staff blaming them for him playing poorly and wasn’t a distraction in PIT once he was benched for Wilson after Pickens became vocally frustrated with Fields to the point he on camera celebrated Wilson being his QB. You totally right. Jets avoided a drama QB signing Fields.
Wanna guess whats gonna happen when Fields plays poorly? History tells us him and Aaron Glenn are gonna be at odds.
You probably had no problem with Baker Mayfield running around the side line grabbing his crotch telling the other team to suck his D before going #1 overall, but sure Sanders needed to humbled.
Fields is not someone the media will clammer at you for sitting or moving on from if it doesnt work out, which it likely will. Sanders would undoubedtly create more of a giant media circus than he already has.
Baker also went 18-10 against ranked teams in college and was a way better prospect btw so what are you even getting it?
LMAO what? Fields isnt someone the media will clammer at you for sitting or moving? Were you in a coma since he was drafted? Thats ALL the media did regarding Justin Fields is advocate for him constantly first demanding Chicago trade him and stop wasting his talents and then questioning Pittsburgh if they made the right decision to bench him for Wilson.
Your ranked teams argument is pretty weak btw. Its the NFL not college.
Mahomes went 0-6 vs ranked teams in college
Jackson was 1-7 vs ranked teams in college
Pick a better argument.
LMAO what?
Yeah dude a QB whos shown hes a bust on a 2 year prove it deal isnt gonna draw as much attention as Sanders. I dont even like the Fields move but hes not a headache compared to what the media would create with Sanders in NY. Thats a move that gets people fired and they just got their jobs.
Cope harder i guess, its ok no one wanted your boy
“What the media would create” is red meat for those who breathe through their mouth. Tabloids are barely hanging on, talk radio is losing listeners, and both are bleeding revenue.
And it still influenced the Jets decisions at QB, the draft, free agency, etc. Ulbrich begged a reporter to put Sauce at the top of mock drafts so they could convince Woody to draft a CB that high for example. Not to mention the amount of people it got to vehemently reject the HoF QB that is Rodgers after a he put up the best statistical QB season the Jets have seen since 2015
Although traditional sports media outlets like ESPN are losing its luster with the public, NY media is still vicious and influences more than people are willing to admit, they just do it through clips and headlines rather than quality content.
God the jets have been inept that long that their last “great” qb season was Ryan fking Fitzpatrick in 2015?
Jesus knew it was bad but holy fk.
You also seem to forget Rodgers cost the jets
Draft picks
Money to sign his friends
Got a decent HC in Robert Saleh fired which made the defense worse which made Rodgers have to throw more to catch up
Cost the jets more picks to bring in Adams as a nail marry attempt to save their bad season
And ultimately gained nothing from Rodgers except headaches and empty promises broken dreams
Look at you ignoring facts that fields was a drama queen in Chicago in headlines for all the wrong reasons and Pittsburgh was constantly in the media over their decision to bench fields.
Maybe pay attention better? Spend less time on only fans
Jets suck. Deal with it. They’re an inept franchise and will always be inept. They ruined Travis career and literally did nothing to address their qb situation should have taken a qb or least taken a flier on sanders do something instead of over paying for a monumental draft bust in fields.
Least you stopped citing that dumb college record va ranked teams once I showed you show dumb it was
Youre insufferable and so salty no one but the Browns drafted Sanders lmao
If every team in the league skipped out on a player except the browns that should tell you everything, but youre not that bright. Keep moving the goal posts tho lil bro
The “inept franchise” in New York is the one whose color is blue.
For those with Short Attention Span Syndrome, people in Greater New York were paying to have planes flying over the stadium towing a banner that read “Mr Mara Enough”.
‘The “inept franchise” in New York is the one whose color is blue.’
The Giants are inept but acting like the Jets aren’t one of the biggest clown shows in professional sports is crazy. No Super Bowls in 55 years. No playoffs in a decade. The owner’s grandson, named Brick, is affecting player personnel decisions and is doing so based on Madden ratings. Woody Johnson. Come on, Chucky. The Jets aren’t any better than the Giants.
Who tipped off the Giants drafting Jaxson Dart? The general manager’s son on his personal Instagram! And Dart went to the same college as Eli Manning.
Jets Derangement Syndrome is alive and well in Sportsworld.
Literally said the Giants are inept. Not denying that. But the GM’s son tipping the Giants pick on Instagram is way better than the owner’s grandson actually affecting personnel decisions.
Also “Jets Derangement Syndrome”? You comment on literally every Giants article or bring them up whenever you can. What are you talking about? You’re a Jets fan, Chuckster. Embrace the suck.
I mean, unless you live in the Bears target audience area, I don’t believe Fields was nearly the distraction you’re making him out to be.
Almost everyone gave Fields a pass, because they knew the situation he was put into was dog crap. Even with their personnel Caleb Williams got to walk into a locker room full of talented weapons, and look what they did for him this off season re-making the entire OL with a mixture of All-Pro, reliable vets and talented and hungry younger studs.
Robinson, Byrd, Mooney, Miller, Goodwin, and Wims…Then, Cole Kmet and a washed Jimmy Graham. Montgomery and Cohen was probably their best grouping, but they were running behind a rookie in Teven Jenkins, and the rest weren’t e a try household names either with Whitehair, Daniels, Bars, and Ifedi..
For Fields’ sophomore season, you’d think they would give him better weapons, and an improved OL, right?? Nope, not these geniuses. They kept Montgomery as their primary weapon, but your top two WRs were Mooney and Equanimeous St. Brown, and then Kmet at TE again. The OL their talented LT of the future was moved inside for yet another rookie to start at LT in Braxton Jones. Then, you had Whitehair, Mustipher, and Reiff.
First, Fields had Nagy his rookie season, and then he gets fired. And who better to help groom their sophomore QB other than Matt Eberflus?? A career long Linebackers coach and defensive coordinator with zero head coaching experience…Seemed like a match made in football heaven right!?! I mean how could this not work wonderfully…lol
Caleb Williams first year already started off strong with Eberflus a sitting duck and not making it through the first year, and then Thomas Brown taking over. Clearly, they knew they needed to clean house if they really wanted to give this young QB even a chance at success.
Even with all of that, his first year options seemed pretty dang good on paper at least. He was already given significantly more talent around him than Fiekds ever dreamed of having. D’Andre Swift at RB with Roschon Johnson as his back-up, and then a very veteran led WR room with DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, and their star, first round rookie Romeo Odunze. Then, in the TE room they had Kmet AND Gerald Everett.
Let’s take a look at the OL Teven Jenkins, Braxton Jones, Darnell Wright, Matt Pryor, and Coleman Shelton as the Center…
We all know what Caleb Williams is getting now Ben Johnson, and one of the craziest OL remodeling jobs we have ever seen. I actually think the Bears are giving Caleb Williams every opportunity to succeed, but that’s the point. They are now doing everything g they should have done with Fields, but they failed him miserably.
He didn’t live up to his side of the bargain really either, but if he was given the same caliber 2nd year roster Caleb has and one of the game’s best play callers as his head coach I’m willing to bet he would have at least “looked” significantly better.
The Jets also signed Brady Cook from Missouri as a UDFA, so he could push Martinez for QB3, if they don’t try to bring in anyone else.
This is why they need to grab the money they can, when they can. It is a fragile business. I had high hopes for him. Wish him well in whatever path he takes.
FSU wins the championship that year if he doesn’t get hurt
Hate to see this. Good kid
In a related story it seems that Jordan Travis received the medical advice of retiring from a medical expert. That expert turned out to be a prank call from Jax Ulbrich, who has since apologized expect a heavy fine for the Falcons and Jeff Ulbrich to follow.
Advocating for double jeopardy? The Atlanta Falcons and Jeff Ulbrich have already been smacked down by the NFL re Shadeur Sanders.
Bruhhhh
Had if Jordan Travis would have retired a week ago that draft would have been a lot different.
You might be on to something…Travis burned his bridge with the Jets by the end of last season. (see comments made by his agent and Travis taking down Jets ref on social media) So he probably waited until the week after the draft to make this announcement that he knew was necessary. Screwed them from drafting a mid-late round QB instead of the chopped liver of UDFAs to choose from.
Football is a contact sport. Every pro player knows that a single play can result in a career ending injury. That is why they get paid a far better salary than fans like you and I.
leg didn’t heal because he was in the jets care.
Who?
lots of fuss here over a potential QB3 taken as a 5th round flyer. (applies to both guys)
