No suspension is on tap in connection with Jalen Carter‘s spitting incident. The standout Eagles defensive tackle will be eligible to face the Chiefs in Week 2.
A $57K fine will be levied, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting Week 1 — when Carter was ejected without playing a down — will serve as the third-year DT’s de facto suspension. This fine covers a game check on Carter’s rookie contract.
The Eagles and Carter worked out an arrangement in which future guarantees will not void as part of this NFL-imposed fine, Schefter adds. The team, as should be expected with a player of this caliber, will not seek any signing bonus forfeiture, either. Carter is now in the clear, though this incident will certainly ding a reputation that already sustained hits prior to his Philadelphia arrival.
Because the NFL is treating this like Carter was suspended for a game, the Eagles could have voided his guarantees. With the team undoubtedly eyeing an extension for the 2023 first-round pick — who becomes eligible for a new deal in January — it does not surprise it would work out an arrangement to protect his guarantees and signing bonus money. Having Carter for Week 2 will also provide a significant boost, as the Cowboys pushed the defending Super Bowl champions without the Georgia product available.
Viewed as perhaps the 2023 draft class’ top talent, Carter fell to No. 9 after a handful of teams passed on him. Carter was hit with misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing. These charges came in connection with the accident that killed Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy on Jan. 15, 2023 (LeCroy and Willock were in a separate vehicle). Carter reached a plea deal in this case, avoiding jail time, but some teams removed him from their draft boards as a result of the accident. That turned out to benefit the Eagles, who traded up one spot (via the Bears) to nab the high-end DT talent.
A suspension was believed to be in play, as Carter spit on Dak Prescott just after the opening kickoff. The Cowboys quarterback had spit in Carter’s direction prior to the ejection; the 24-year-old D-tackle spit on the star quarterback soon after. Dallas enjoyed success offensively against the Eagles, putting up 20 first-half points. Vic Fangio‘s defense adjusted, as the teams combined for just three points after the second-half lightning delay. But Carter serves as the Eagles’ front-seven anchor; having him available will give them a much better chance of containing the Chiefs in the teams’ Super Bowl LIX rematch.
This ban will presumably influence future punishments for spitting, though players would probably run the risk of an actual suspension if such an act occurs well into a game. Carter being let off without a true ban is due to him not playing a down Thursday night.
Seems correct to me. Like I said before, he was functionally suspended for a whole game and had his very stupid action replayed a whole bunch of times during one of the most watched games of the year. I think that and a fine is a reasonable punishment without going overboard.
I most certainly agree with a thumb up
Eh, I don’t like the precedent of a “functional suspension”. It sets a slippery slope of when it counts as a full game. If he’d done it a minute into the game, does it still count as a game? How about after one quarter? Does he then get suspended for the first quarter of the next game, since he already served three quarters of a “functional suspension”?
Bizarre. He got ejected for the spitting. Doesn’t matter how much time is left in the game. Then, the penalty is a one game suspension. You can’t open the door to partial suspensions and functional suspensions. He should be suspended for Week 2.
I get where you’re coming from, but he didn’t play a single snap. This also saves the NFL from having to go through an appeals process that delves into Dak spitting first (which I don’t think was the same and don’t think is a good excuse for Carter, but it’s certainly a messier conversation). This whole thing is embarrassing for Carter, the Eagles, and the NFL. It’s not that big a deal and I think everyone would rather move on.
I agree, Oof. Rct raises really compelling points, but with the other circumstances considered (I don’t think that enough evidence exists to say that Dak was trying to instigate, but I understand why Carter was upset), I get why no further suspension happened. I wouldn’t have been upset at all with a one or two game suspension, that said. He better be on his best behavior going forward, though. No more benefit of the doubt for Carter.
For sure. Between how he entered the league, what happened on Thursday, and how close he is to making extraordinary money, he should be making a concerted effort to keep his profile clean.
I get what both of you are saying, but to me the punishment is this: ejection from the game and a one game suspension. You do it six seconds into a game? Tough break. In-game punishments and punishments levied by the league should be two separate things. There are in-game officials and there’s the league office.
I totally get where you guys are coming from but giving him “credit” for serving a suspension essentially means that the in-game officials suspended him for a game. That just seems wrong to me.
Fair points, and I respect the argument. I’d have not been mad had it come down to that.
act… I agree. And the whole “sportsmanship” theme the league has trumpeted is horse $hit.
I’ll be running for NFL commissioner on a more taunting platform.
I’d vote for ya. And ya probly wouldn’t get booed every time you showed your face either.
Maybe im in the minority but if someone spits at me we fighting. Dak gonna get off scott free bc he is a qb but carter doesn’t react that way if Prescott doesn’t spit at him. To put it another way if a guy throws a punch and misses is the other person not supposed to fight back? I know im in the minority with this opinion but dak definitely skirted the line and got a reaction. Brilliant move by dak
That’s bullshit!! 57k isn’t going to change anything. Set a precedent and suspend him for 2 games. What a waste of an opportunity to let them know this crap won’t be tolerated.
I think getting kicked out of the first game of the year after six seconds in primetime did a pretty decent job of sending that message.
suspended 1 game and fined. its the correct punishment
Bdd1967, I agree 100%
Let’s stop this outbreak of personal spat sparring before it gets out of hand you say? There is no evidence Carter is a serial spatter 67, so why the hate .
Spitting on someone in public is misdemeanor assault. The league has suspended players for misdemeanor assault before… for one game.
Carter missed the entirety of the opener, and he lost his game check to the fine. I’d say message sent. It seems appropriate to me.
Thank goodness! Fly Eagles Fly, Go ‘Dawgs!!!
Lol. This dude just gets off on everything. The spitting incident is dumb, but it was the PERFECT time to teach this obviously arrogant kid a good life lesson. Instigates his drunk buddies to drag race him leaving another person dead. Definitely a guy I want in my corner he’s immune to responsibility!
Cold take on a minor incident in the NFL and a very tragic incident outside the lines, my insensitive friend. You should self mute.
Don’t like my posts mute me. Carter is a POS. Simple as that. You can defend his actions any way you choose, Philly fans typically do find a way to make absolutely garbage people their heroes.
Sorry I never defended just agree with the penalty. Disagree with your nonsensical attacks.
Nonsensical? He egged his buddies on while they were drunk to race him resulting in someone’s death. Then he got off completely free. No suspension. No fines. No criminal charges… just gets to make millions to spit on guys
Blame the drunk, Smow bunny, who was driving the car, for the kids murder. Not the person who wasn’t inside the car.
I blame the person who was driving as well as the person instigating them to do so.
So if a drunk driver crashes into your car you should be charged with attempted murder cause you were involved and responsible for their death? Alright if you say so.
And yes you’re responsible cause if they don’t crash into you they don’t die (no in reality they probably crash into someone else or a tree or drive off the road and die).
Not the same situation at all. You weren’t actively egging that person on to drive impaired and race you because you think it’s fun..
You’re still responsible whether you egg the person on or not by your logic cause you were involved while driving another car.
That point is moot cause had you not been parked at the red light they wouldn’t have crashed into you and died. They would haven blown through the red light and lived.
Your presence at the scene caused their death and by your logic you should charged with attempted murder if you survive.
Not at all by my logic. Not to mention he went to the scene and then fled it because he knew he was caught. Gotta be an Eagles fan the way you’re defending an accomplice to murder.
You want to blame Carter for other people’s choices cause he was involved
Yes by your logic you attempted to kill a drunk driver who crashed into you cause you were involved
Not an eagles fan but I’m a fan of rational thought and reasoning which you seem completely devoid of.
Congrats if a drunk driver crashes into you or anyone and dies you’re also an accomplice to murder lmao
“ It’s facts that [hottakesonly] was involved in the events prior to the [death of the drunk driver].” Attempted murder accomplice to murder confirmed
One of the lamest comments in the history of the internet.
You probably defend Ray Lewis though right?
No. Ray Lewis should’ve ben in prison. But please continue to act like you know all my opinions based off of one.
You don’t like the laws and the way the system treated Jalen in the driving incident, complaining on a message board won’t help. Go petition the law makers and prosecutors who gave him that outcome. Linking the football incident to that is ridiculous. And trust me, if you were in the same situation as him, you would be praising the justice system. Stop being so jealous…
Petitioning lawmakers doesn’t help either. But I vote for who I want in office. I wouldn’t be in the same situation as him because I’m not a POS who thinks my talent at a kids game can get me a pass through life. Not jealous, just a normal human being who is tired of this outrageous behavior from overpaid, entitled athletes.
Whoa. Someone needs to chill the eff out with this comment. There is NOWHERE that suggests Carter INSTIGATED the racing incident. That is an aggressive and massive bend of the truth. If you try to tell me that you or NO ONE you knew ever drove recklessly between ages of 18-22 you’re just a flat out liar. How awful would you feel if one of your best friends died when you were being a dumbass teenager? The guilt he probably lives with everyday and we just forget he’s a human cuz he plays in the NFL? You crossed a line with that honestly. You should be ashamed of yourself
It’s facts that Carter was involved in the events prior to the racing incident.
Twice you said that he egged his buddies on. Literally nowhere is that reported. You completely fabricated that. And then come back with this sorry ass retort as if it’s not in writing for us all to see, TWICE.
It’s a known fact. Carter and the person who crashed were racing. It takes 2 people to race. One person isn’t just racing themselves lol. But hey, google is extremely hard to use.
And he fled the scene. But hey, as long as he can play football at a high level, we’ll give him a pass on that as well.
Again you’re working really hard to work around your comment that he “egged it on”. Literally nothing in the media or in police reports suggests that in the slightest. You just flat out lied. And based on your other comments it just shows what a worthless person you are
Instigating a street race with drunk people, seeing them crash and checking the scene, and then fleeing said scene is literally in multiple reports. I haven’t lied, you just haven’t comprehended. The only thing worthless is your opinion. I mean, imagine thinking so highly of yourself you think you can call other people on the internet ‘worthless’. Every life has worth. Whether you’re a couch ridden mother’s basement loner like yourself, a wanna be thug and lifetime criminal football player like Carter, or a gracious, smart contributor to society like myself LIFE HAS WORTH. Get off your high horse, even though we know you like sitting on things for personal pleasure, you’re not as special as you think you are.
He was charged and found guilty of reckless driving. He paid the standard fine – $1000- was given 12 months probation which is a common outcome (probation) – reckless driving usually maxes out at about 1 year jail time but many don’t get anywhere near that. And made to do 80 hours community service. Again a common outcome for the crime and conviction. Not sure where you get he got off on everything when he was given a pretty regular punishment based on the crime.
He also served essentially a 1 game suspension and was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct which spitting at an opponent falls under. You really think he’s gonna get more games when the NFL gave Addison 4 for his DUI and Rice 6 who was involved in far worse than Carter? No. They’d have a hard time justifying it.
They give players games for less. DUI gets 4 games but back in the day guys would get 6 games for being found NOT guilty. A joke this league has become.
They suspend players for racking up unsportsmanlike penalties and suspend players for dangerous plays made.
For a first time offender he got the correct punishment which is a fine and a suspension.
Now if he continues racking up unsportsmanlike stuff he’ll get more longer suspensions. But no a first time offender doesn’t get much.
Did someone die in the Rice case we don’t know about? That’s what most people would call “far worse”.
Well considering Rice was hit with 8 felonies and pleaded guilty to 2 3rd degree felonies plus received 30 days in jail and Carter received a misdemeanor for reckless driving no jail fine probation and community service yeah I’d say what Rice did was far worse.
Rice was also driving the car when he lost control hit the median and caused a six car collision resulting in injuries vs. Carter was driving a different car and his friends lost control of their own car and died sadly.
So yeah Rice was far worse give his punishment both on and off the field.
You didn’t answer the question. Did someone die in the Rice case?
“ That’s what most people would call “far worse”.”
Death doesn’t define far worse for Rice or Carter. Neither died cause of their actions. Rice or Carter dying would definitely had be a far worse outcome for each. Sure.
The driver and passenger died cause of their own independent actions/choices. Nobody forced them to do what they did.
When discussin who’s situation was worse Carter or Rice Rice was clearly worse as already explained to you by on and off the field punishments each received.
If anyone dies because of that kind of completely insane behavior (street racing in public), there should be jail time. No one died in Rice’s incident (by sheer luck I’m sure). Someone did in Carter’s case and the fact is since no one but the idiots who were there can say for sure what really happened, you don’t really know what Carter’s involvement was. Only that he lived and fled the scene. He’s a low life who got a slap on the wrist. Then and now.
The people responsible for the deaths died cause of their actions. You wanna give dead people jail time?
Carter didn’t cause their death despite your poor attempts to insinuate such
Carter didn’t force ppl behind the wheel
Carter didn’t force them to drive drunk
Carter didn’t force them to lose control
Carter didn’t force them to crash and die
They chose to get into the car
They chose to drive drunk, if your best link is “Carter called them chicken” lmao you have crap evidence Carters responsible in any way shape or form
They chose to drive recklessly
They lost control
They crashed and died cause of their choices
Not the choices Carter made
Rashee Rice driving his car and choices he made caused a massive accident. Carters driving his car led to him going too fast on the road that’s about it. The other drivers poor choices and driving their car led to the deaths of two people by driving too fast while drunk.
Again. Carter triple dog daring someone doesn’t make him responsible for their actions. Him calling them a chicken making chicken noises doesn’t make him responsible. And of the day a drunk driver did what a drunk driver does. Drives drunk crashes and dies
You’re waaayyy over reaching and just flat making up BS to support what?? You must be fun at parties. Good grief.
Exactly. This dude’s incident left someone dead but Rice got 6 games. Rightfully got 6 games too. Carter deserves a ban.
This is a drop in the bucket fine for him but now he’s always going to be viewed as a dirty player. It will always follow him.
He’s nasty and dominant. A bit feisty at times. Looking forward to seeing him letting off some steam against the Chiefs.Fly eagles Fly
Sure, I’m positive you’d be saying the same thing if he was on another team and spit on Jalen Hurts!
He’s a dirty human *
Accomplice to murder but playing in the nfl still
“I don’t think you know what that word means”
You’re a dirty human
You don’t know me but you sure are obsessed with my opinion on Jalen Carter. That in itself shows who the dirty human is.
This is ridiculous. The NFL only issues a fine, and the Eagles are doing everything they can to alleviate even this minimal sanction.
Gruß,
BSHH
Dude just paid a store manager salary off of spitting on another grown man on national television. What a world
Think the fine should’ve been a lot more, but I agree with the game serving as the suspension.
one game suspension, 1 game paycheck as per nfl.com
A higher fine could’ve been issued on top of the game check.
Coddling Tom “Double-Dipper” Brady … quietly demoting 3 game officials to the college ranks … not suspending a lineman DQ’d for spitting at an opponent.
Ain’t the NFL fun!
If he wasn’t a star player, based on his track record, he would most likely be either in jail or working at McDonald’s.
You could say that about other actions in his life as well. He’s a punk and this is just his character showing through on a bigger stage.
So in other words he doesn’t get suspended and, in terms of his income, he gets fined like $20. THAT IS RIDICULOUS.
Feels weak from the league to make it a functional penalty. Suspend him for 1 game and move on. But this “meh, it’s fine”attitude is message to players that they don’t take spitting on another man (literal assault) seriously.
One man spitting on another has to be the most pusillanimous way of challenging someone. You would expect children to do something idiotic like spitting, but a grown 300 pound man? Does he also shave his legs and wear women’s underwear? Better watch out, if he escalates the violence he may go for a kick in the frank and beans next time. What a waste of flesh and bone this doofus is
this guy should be behinds bars
The only thing more hypocritical than notoriety putting you above the law is wanting to make an example of someone because of their notoriety
He took the bait and got booted from the game. Sure I expected NFL to suspend him another game because that’s not unusual.
I was definitely surprised they took a rational approach without making it the standard approach: consider each situation based on its unique scenario
They definitely saw Dak’s bait but avoided controversy by sticking to Carter’s dumb reaction
They also avoided extending the whole thing because the NFLPA would’ve definitely pushed back on an excessive punishment
I’m a big Eagles fan and I think he should have been fined another $50k by the team. I know they will address him behind closed doors but I believe sometimes things need to be known and a point needs to be made.
He’s tremendously talented and a huge piece of the Eagles defense and future. I don’t think money motivated certain athletes as evidence by a shirt he wore last week indicating that he’s rich. So hit him in the wallet a bit. Next contract would have stipulations based on behavior on and off the field if it does not already have one. What he did last week was dumb. If the Eagles would have lost, it would have been a bigger problem. I’d have had more respect for him if he just punched Dak in the head rather than spit on him. Spitting on someone is degrading. Probably one of the worst things. Hopefully if he says he was provoked, he looks before he leaps next time. Not a proud moment for him and embarrassing for an organization that prides themselves in being quality and having quality people. People make mistakes but if they don’t change, they will not have much of a career in Philly.
So did Dak Prescott got fined for spitting on Carter? Both were caught on Camera 📷 and both need to Disciplined for the Actions! Fine 1 game and suspended a game too. The NFL front office is getting soft. How the Chargers player throwing a punch in a game without an ejection or a suspension?
He did not spit on Carter. Carter wasn’t even near the Cowboys huddle when Dak spit on the ground. I don’t even think Dak’s spitting was some fake “tough guy” stuff. He just spit.
The only one who got spit on was Dak. I’ve watched the videos like everyone else.
Seems reasonable.
I hope he is noted for his football play on the field and not dumb stuff.
