Isiah Pacheco is out once again, forcing the Chiefs to lean on 30-year-old Kareem Hunt and seventh-round rookie Brashard Smith. Kansas City was linked to running back trades since August, even though the team believed Pacheco would deliver a strong contract year. Nothing materialized, but it was not for lack of trying.
The Chiefs are believed to have made an offer for the top running back available, with SNY’s Connor Hughes reporting the three-time reigning AFC champions sent a fourth-round proposal to the Jets for Breece Hall. The Jets held out for a third, according to Hughes and ESPN’s Dan Graziano. Only one running back (Tank Bigsby) ended up being traded in-season, and that deal occurred in mid-September.
After the Jets’ explosive deadline, Aaron Glenn said (via Hughes) Hall is “not a guy I want to get rid of.” This, of course, came after Hall made a last-ditch trade request following the Jets’ trades of Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams. But the Jets will now move into position to potentially discuss a second contract for the former second-round pick. They will hold exclusive Hall negotiating rights until the March legal tampering period.
Glenn spoke against a Hall trade before the deadline, and previous reporting pegged the Jets as setting a Day 2 asking price for the contract-year back. The Chiefs backed down on offering what will likely be a late-Day 2 selection, given their success under Andy Reid, and will move forward with Hunt, Smith and eventually Pacheco.
Kansas City has been unable to find a dynamic back since Hunt’s first stint, one that brought an abrupt ending due to the running back being shown kicking a woman on the ground at a Cleveland hotel. That video led to the Chiefs waiving Hunt, and the Patrick Mahomes era has since included low-end investments at the position. While the Chiefs have seen some players make memorable contributions — from Pacheco to Damien Williams to pass-down specialist Jerick McKinnon — they have not had a player on Hall’s level since waiving the younger Hunt version seven years ago.
The team did make efforts here, missing on Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the 2020 first round and then seeing a 2024 Josh Jacobs free agency push fall short. But the AFC power has understandably prioritized higher-value positions, letting the likes of Pacheco (a 2022 seventh-round pick) and low-end free agents (Williams, McKinnon, Hunt 2.0) handle ball-carrying duties.
The Chiefs rank 12th in rushing, but Mahomes’ 285 yards has contributed heavily to that number. Pacheco is not on IR, being deemed week-to-week with an MCL sprain, so it is possible Kansas City will be at full strength coming out of its Week 10 bye. But the Chiefs’ Hall push shows a sense of urgency — but ultimately a price point — with regards to adding a back this season. This also would have been at least a regional homecoming for Hall, who went to high school in Wichita, Kansas.
A fourth-rounder would have been nothing to scoff at regarding a rental trade for the Jets. While Gang Green dealt Gardner and Williams, the team held onto players who drew more pre-deadline rumors — Jermaine Johnson, Quincy Williams, Allen Lazard. The Jets, however, now have more time to evaluate Hall in Tanner Engstrand‘s offense.
Hall, 24, is on pace for his first 1,000-yard season. A report indicated the Jets — who had not shown interest in an extension this year — have seen some in the facility show more interest in signing Hall to a second contract. While the RB market has seen a gradual depression, some high-value deals for stars notwithstanding, Hall’s age and his ACL tear having occurred back in 2022 should give him a reasonably strong market come March.

Will the comp pick be a 3rd? I’m guessing not.
Comp pick is a 3rd at the lowest and potentially a second round pick instead of a third. This is why they were holding out for a third. If they don’t sign him and he goes somewhere, they are guaranteed a 3rd at the worst, and possibly a second.
It depends what signings the Jets make themselves. They also could tag him but that wouldn’t generate good will.
No it is not lmao 3rd is the highest a comp pick can be, and we’re not getting a 3rd. Jets have a ton of cap room and are likely going to use it, lessening whatever comp we get back.
The highest a comp pick has EVER been was pick 96 in the 3rd round. Im not sure where youre coming up with oh theyll just get a second and a 3rd at the worst.
Begamin’s right. Compensatory picks are always awarded at the end of the third round. The Ravens frequently netted thirds, but those were the results of big contracts elsewhere, plus the Ravens not delving often into free agency themselves.
To get a compensatory pick, a team needs to basically have a net loss in players signed by contract value. A player signing a market setting deal can make a good case for a third round compensatory pick, but if the former team signs a bunch of other high priced free agents, they can lose value in the compensatory award. It’s not exactly what specifically determines the exact pick that a team will get, but you can guess in the area by observing the size of the contract that a departing player signs, and then comparing it to any incoming signees.
I don’t think that Hall, as talented and hard working as I find him to be, will sign a market setting contract. I doubt that he nets New York a third, but he certainly could contribute to them getting a later selection. I’d be surprised if that hypothetical pick was more than fifth, in my opinion.
This was a game of chicken everyone lost. The Chiefs want to win a Super Bowl with the worst RB room in the league, and the Jets want picks for their rebuild. It makes no sense they couldn’t get this done.
Unfortunately for those who get their news from ESPN, the Chiefs can’t win a Super Bowl cos they’re out of the playoff places as it stands.
Weird. I didn’t know the season was over before week 10.
You must not have watched the KC-Buffalo game. CBS ran an “as it stands” graphic for playoff positions and the Chiefs were not in the top 7. Jacksonville did make the top 7 with their OT win at Las Vegas.😄
Graphics about who’s in the playoffs “now” mean less than nothing, given that there are literal months left in the season.
This is why the trade deadline occurred when it did. Because teams who want to improve their teams sometimes like to trade for players who might help them in the remaining games left in the season.
The Kansas City Chiefs, participants in the previous three Super Bowls, would like to participate in another one. This is the goal of their season, which is not over yet, because the NFL just completed week nine of a season that goes on for more than nine weeks.
Perhaps the Chiefs will attain this goal, and not trading for Breece Hall will not matter. Perhaps they will fall short, and people will regret not trading for Breece Hall. Perhaps many other things will occur that we cannot predict, since the future is famously difficult to see into. However – and this is the main point – such things will be determined at a later date, given that there are more games in the NFL season that will happen after today.
Talking a lot and saying nothing, as “The Godfather of Soul” James Brown once sang.
Your beloved Chiefs can’t beat the LA Chargers and have yet to play Denver. First game for KC after their bye is in Denver, replete with Rocky Mountain Thunder. When KC beats the Broncos then we’ll talk.
BTW the Jets have demoted Quincy Williams one day after trading Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams.
I’m just really glad you’ve figured out there are more games on the NFL schedule and the playoffs aren’t starting today. It was a journey to get there, but you made it!
You would have better luck talking to a wall than Chucky.
Ofc the Jets dont trade the guy cryptic tweeting and begging to leave just to get nothing for him when he goes elsewhere
Go back to the Jets’ last game before their bye. Breece Hall had 133 rushing yards, 2 rushing TD, plus the TD pass that won the game.Quinnen Williams assisted on only 1 tackle, on the Bengals’ final drive. Sauce Gardner was in concussion protocol and thus inactive.
Jets are looking at who’s productive, not at the biggest names in a fire sale.
Buddy Breece isnt coming back next year, hes simply auditioning for other teams and now we’re getting nothing from him. Youve been told this already but youre so stoked about the 1 win against the worst defense ever assembled
Overlooking comp pick.
No, im not. We’re not getting a 3rd round comp for Breece
I have carefully selected my words, and you’ve overlooked your own:
“now we’re getting nothing from him”
I dont care about the 5th-6th round comp we might get back when a 4th was on the table. It might as well be “nothing”. Miss me with how carefully you selected words bro lmao
Take the time to articulate yourself and people will take you more seriously.
You clearly care about the organization. No need to say things like that. A pick is a pick.
Hope for a third since you chopped off a lot of talent from your squad. I believe it factors in.
Saying a guy is “not a guy I want to get rid of” after getting rid of two of your best players who never publicly complained about how bad the team was or how they want to leave is dirty work. Aaron Glenn keeps losing points day by day.
Should Glenn say that Hall isn’t wanted or something? Hall is still a Jet, so Glenn is saying all of the right things. You’re putting too much stock in a fluff quote that is at the end of the day a meaningless one.
They didn’t want to get rid of those two until they were impressed by the offers. I’m not sure what Jerry Jones was thinking with his offer. It basically works out as Micah Parsons for Quinnen Williams and the Cowboys are in a worse position to make a run at a playoff spot than the Chiefs are.
Bizarre that the Chiefs thought giving up a 3rd and a 6th for Kadarius Toney was a good move but not giving up a single 3rd for Breece Hall. I get that Hall is essentially a rental but Toney was almost never healthy, had off-the-field issues, and wasn’t all that special even when he did play, which was almost never.
Sticking their neck out like that for Toney ended up working out, so you’d think they would be willing to take a risk like that again, especially given Hall’s talent and ability. Guess not.
Even as a Jets fan I kind of wanted to see Hall on the Chiefs. I think he’d be the best fit for what Reid wants to do since Shady McCoy. Remember how much mileage Reid used to get out of the screen game?
It seemed like a potentially very impactful move for KC. Was really surprised they stood so firm here.
Ooooo….thats gotta sting 😂
The Chiefs weren’t convinced Hall could get arrested for a criminal offense so they decided not to meet the Jets asking price 🙂
