Despite rumblings about a few of their players, the Giants had a quiet trade deadline.
Trading Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence never felt realistic. Teams seemed unlikely to pony up a first-round pick for edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, who has just 2.5 sacks this season. And the Giants could not find takers on offensive lineman Evan Neal or wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, two players on expiring deals they were open to moving.
Uncertainty around the team’s future also lent itself to standing pat on Tuesday, per Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. The Giants’ current regime desperately needs to show proof-of-concept with their current vision for the walker. Jettisoning two of their top young defenders could make the team look bad enough down the stretch to threaten the jobs of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.
However, the Giants are still realistic about their current standing and need to add talent in the offseason. They were only interested in players under contract through at least 2026, as trading draft picks for rentals would not better the team’s future.
There’s a careful balance to be struck there. At 2-6, the Giants may be content with a losing season if it means a top draft pick. Given the scrutiny on Schoen and Daboll, they may not be intentionally tanking, but adding a rental could help them win an extra game or two without boosting their overall playoff chances. At that point, the extra victories may not be worth the resulting drop in the draft order.
In a way, though, the Giants’ quiet deadline suggests that Schoen and Daboll believe that they have one more year in charge, but their jobs are not secure beyond that. Investing heavily in this year would suggest that they are on the hot seat right now, while trading Lawrence or Thibodeaux for future picks would indicate that they are committed to a long-term rebuild with Dart under center.
Instead, it seems like New York will be approaching the 2026 offseason with the hope of improving their roster around Dart and contending for an NFC playoff spot to show they’re capable of even more.

Job security? really? It’s a little late in the game for Schoen and Daboll to be worried about looking bad. These guys need to grow a pair and be more aggressive like the Jets.
Dead coach/GM walking. Expect the plane to fly over MetLife Stadium before the Giants’ next home game vs. Green Bay.
I mean they threw the Hail Mary pass to save their jobs by making Dart the starting QB so why wouldn’t they follow up by being aggressive at the trade deadline? They’re probably dead men walking like you say so what did they really have to lose?
That’s on John Mara for retaining Daboll and Schoen two days after the Giants finished a 3-14 season.
Dart has impressed so far but the fact that he went to Eli Manning’s old school is what’s going to keep all doubts about Dart going until the Giants start winning on a consistent basis.
Dart would be just as impressive if Mike Kafka, Mike Shula or Mike Connors were head coach. The train wreck involving the other 52 current players is fully the responsibility of Schoen and Daboll.
I’ll push back on one thing-Daboll definitely has a few missteps, but he’s a huge reason for Dart’s success. The offense that he’s running is well suited to Dart’s mobility and other skillsets. He did a lot of the same stuff with Allen, actually, in Buffalo, which eventually evolved into a more sophisticated passing offense as time went on.
Daboll has made many mistakes, no question, but I do think that Dart fits well with the playbook that Daboll wants to run. With his back against the wall, running a style that he had success with before makes sense for Daboll as a playcaller.
The Giants prospects wouldn’t be looking too bad if they didn’t have Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo out for the season. Jaxson Dart came in like a breath of life, but without any weapons he’s helpless.
That wouldn’t have changed anything. Daboll is the problem. He has to go. Two primary weapons left and consecutively are in the MVP conversation. That’s the end of his career as an HC with that on his resume. The GM probably can ride it out if he isn’t attaching himself at the hip to his buddy because the team isn’t devoid of talent. The next HC will have a solid base to start with.
Dart had “weapons” (what a Dumb Jock cliche!) yet couldn’t pull off a miracle finish in Denver.
Giants need defense more than anything. Notice where club legend Carl Banks dissed Dexter Lawrence in the week before the 49er game?
Danny Dimes will not be in the MVP conversation much longer.
Daniel Jones is now a star in Indianapolis, though the Colts have yet to face Jacksonville or Houston.
It was a season ending loss to the 2-14 Jags back in 2022 that cost the Colts a playoff berth and sent them into a tailspin. The Jags have won the last 10 home meetings against Indy so that will be a game to watch later this season.
Once again, John Mara has dropped the ball letting them continue in their positions
Who would sign with this team? Especially now that mamdani has won. Cant imagine players wanting to bring their families to NY
Politics. Sigh
There’s always that one person that has to do it.
You do know that they play in NJ, right?
Turn off the Faux News and go touch some grass.
weird that the left only complains about Fox news. (and use the same verbiage). Almost like there is complete hegemony in political ideology in the rest of the news media. And almost like 98% of people working in news media give to one party only.
ABC News: owned by milquetoast Disney.
CBS News: controlled by Trump-worshipping billionaire.
CNN: owned by wheeler-dealers looking to break up Warner Bros.
NBC News: owned by company that’s sponsoring the Trump Ballroom.
Got any more MAGA fantasies?
I hate both parties and all politicians, I don’t know what you’re getting at.
@Fgh
Too bad ignorance isn’t painful.
how many ppl have moved out of California in recent yrs? How much money does the state spend relative to what they take in? So yeah, I agree with your comment.
California operates at a surplus. Not sure what you are going on about here. It really would be painful for you.
Lmao they don’t even play in that state buddy, take your politics elsewhere
There are very few Jewish football players. JFC, nobody cares who’s mayor of NYC when you want to watch a football game IN NJ. smh.

this is why you MUST fire the HC/GM regime on the THE VERY SECOND that you catch even a whiff of uncertainty about it.
You can’t do “last chance, Bub” in pro sports because the regimes will change their decision-making to do what is best for themselves as opposed to what is best for the organization.
You have to choose to extend or fire the regime preemptively.
Hyatt is not on an expiring contract.
Unfortunately
It may be a forced expiration soon enough.
This falls squarely on Mara, as is usual.
Now that’s a pathetic headline for the Giants
Paralysis by Analysis.
Afraid to make a mistake…
Dumb. I can’t believe they couldn’t find a decent receiver to add, at least to allow Dart a chance at confidence and growth.
After losing Skattlebo the Giants’ bigger needs were for the running game and especially for defense.
