MARCH 1: The Jets are continuing to negotiate with Hall’s camp, per Hughes. The team prefers a new contract to a tag.
FEBRUARY 24: Breece Hall does not have a new Jets deal in hand at this point. Nevertheless, a departure should not be expected in his case.
When speaking to reporters at the Combine on Tuesday, general manager Darren Mougey reiterated his desire for a Hall agreement to be reached in time for free agency. Failing that, Mougey said (via Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano) a tag will be used to ensure no departure will take place.
The franchise tag for running backs is projected to cost $14.54MM in 2026, while the transition tag is set to carry a value of $11.73MM. The latter option has been mentioned as a strong possibility in Hall’s case, so Mougey’s comments come as little surprise. Coming off a career-high 1,065 rushing yards, Hall would have been one of the top RB options on the open market had the Jets opted to go in a different direction.
Instead, the 24-year-old will remain in the fold for at least one season. Hall was not the subject of extension talks when Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn arrived last year, and uncertainty has loomed over his future ever since. During his latest public comments on the matter, Hall indicated an ambivalence toward remaining in New York or landing a notable pact elsewhere.
“You know, I don’t know,” the former second-rounder said during an interview with the New York Post. “I’ve addressed this for the last six, seven months now. But now I’m just kind of like whatever happens, happens.”
Hall added a level confidence that he will ultimately “get everything that’s coming” to him from a compensation standpoint. That could take the form of a long-term deal, but there have been no indications an agreement is imminent on this front. The running back market includes nine deals averaging at least $10MM per year, but that figure outpaces what Javonte Williams landed on his new Cowboys contract.
Connor Hughes of SNY notes Hall would likely not be willing to accept a three-year, $24MM offer like the one Williams took. The Jets could nonetheless remain close to those terms during negotiations knowing the one-year tag is still a fallback option. With nearly $80MM in cap space, the team will easily be able to afford either tag figure if applying one becomes necessary.

If I remember correctly, he’s already made it known he wants to move on (I could be wrong). I am not a Jets fan, but I assume the Jets tagging him is to help influence the possibility of a trade.
With all of the holes they have to fill, it doesn’t make sense to pay him the tag money. They have Allen who could take over the lead RB duties while they build up the rest of the roster.
They have lots of cap space. Why not tag him and then trade him if they have to instead of getting nothing for him? It’s not like it’ll be a huge tag number anyway.
Its a pretty sizeable tag number, considering hes an RB. I think itd be pretty hard to get real assets for him, they shouldve taken the 4th from the Chiefs.
Chiefs should’ve given up the 3rd.
I guess lol Now Jets will get next to nothing if they decide to move him how fun is that 😀
I think they can likely still get a fourth for him if they tag him. Or they can still have the player.
They were offered a 4th when he was cheap. Now hes set to make 14.5 millions (~5x ish more) so we should expect the same value back? Doesnt make any sense, really. I liked the idea of keeping Breece if we were bringing in a Mendoza or Moore to give them as many weapons as possible. Now that its not happening, it blew up in their face. I think they might as well keep him but the opportunity to get max value for him passed us by. Might be the worst Mougy move yet honestly, whos been solid so far
He’s not cheap anymore, but that could be balanced out by there being more realistic trade partners in the offseason. Teams like KC could still be interested, but a team like Tennessee for instance could be interested now, but never would have been a deadline buyer. Even Seattle could make sense. There are other RB options out there, but Walker’s complete inability to pass protect and Allgeier being much less of a home run threat might make a team more interested in Hall. They may have missed their best chance, but I wouldn’t give up that hope just yet.
You’re kidding me, right? He’s one of the most dynamic young RBs in the game! They’ll easily get something for him.
They have holes to fill but if he leaves there will be another hole to fill. They’re not paying a QB at the moment, huge QB salary anyway, id retain him if I were the jets. Worst case tag and trade, best case continue adding (in this case retaining) talent to the offense until that QB is found…..if he’s ever found
Mr. Hall,
We are all sincerely sorry for you. Hopefully you can break away before you waste your whole career in that New Jersey septic system.
Tag and trade makes the most sense for everybody.
This team is not close to fielding a competitive squad. Might as well get something for him while he can play meaningful games for another team.
Dolfans and Bills Mafia a little jealous?
Poor guy. I’ve honestly never felt so sorry for an NFL player.
If Jets tag him, it’ll be to buy time while they hammer out an extension. If Jets did trade him to another team, that team would insist on working out an extension so the 14.5m tag didn’t count against their cap this year.
