Bears To Audition Several Kickers

The Bears are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to upgrade the kicker position. On Friday, they’ll work out a group of six or seven kickers including Nick Folk, Blair Walsh, and Austin MacGinnis, according to Adam Schefter of and Ian Rapoport of (Twitter links).

Parkey missed a potential game winner against the Eagles in the opening round of the playoffs, putting him on thin ice. His 43-yard try off the upright was a heartbreaker, though it wasn’t exactly Parkey’s fault as it was tipped by defensive tackle Treyvon Hester.

The 26-year-old kicker (27 in February) may have put his job in further jeopardy when he made a guest appearance on NBC’s Today show to discuss the miss. The lighthearted segment rubbed head coach Matt Nagy the wrong way and drew the ire of many Bears fans.

For me, you understand that we always talk about a ‘we’ and not a ‘me’ thing,” Nagy said (via “We always talk as a team, we win as a team, we lose as a team. You know, I just, I didn’t necessarily think that that was too much of a ‘we’ thing.”

It certainly sounds like the Bears want to replace Parkey, but his contract complicates matters. Parkey joined the Bears on a four-year, $15MM deal last offseason which calls for a $4.4MM dead cap hit if he is released before the 2019 season. Earlier this month, GM Ryan Pace indicated that the contract will not necessarily keep them from moving on.

We talk about those things [the financial ramifications], but the most important thing is performance,” Pace said.

All I know is I can’t take another season of Cody. Maybe let him kick off and that’s it.

Sign Gould. I get that he’d cost more, but he’s certainly worth it versus bringing in a bunch of kickers that couldn’t even crack a roster in 2018. He’s kicked in Chicago, he knows how to get it done, and while it’d involve some pride swallowing on the Bears part, I’d say it’s worth it to get a position locked down that hurt you so badly in 2018.

McCaskeys will never do it. “More money” and “pride swallowing” aren’t in their language.

I hope Austin McGinnis wins the job. He was a terrific kicker in college! I think he will translate well to the NFL!

How about a K coming out of college? They have to be found sometime, why not now? Odds are against but not impossible

How the tip not Parkey’s fault? There’s only one guy who’s responsibility it is to kick it high enough to get it over the line and that’s Parkey….

A quarterback who can throw 10+ yards down the field. Just saying, it’s not his strong suit.

Idiotic, quick let’s have tryouts when we don’t need a kicker for 8 more months…

They put the TV camera’s on Nagy right after the season ending miss and his expression was priceless. This is the guy that said he believed in giving people second chances but not third chances…lol.

Correct the mistake, bring Robbie Gold back if he’s not franchised. Dump Parkey immediately.
