Eagles To Sign James Bradberry

James Bradberry is headed to Philly. On Wednesday, the free agent cornerback agreed to a one-year, $10MM with the Eagles, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets

Bradberry, 28, was cut by the G-Men earlier this month. That was pretty much expected, given his would-be cap hit of $21.8MM+ and the other cost-cutting moves that were made by new GM Joe Schoen. The Giants tried to trade him, but ultimately couldn’t find a suitable deal.

I thought there would be more interest,” Schoen admitted earlier this spring. “There were some teams that showed interest pre-draft, and we had a couple different times [where] there [was] compensation in place and the contract never worked out.”

The former second-round pick was a Pro Bowler in 2020 and has only missed five games across his six-year career. In 2021, his second season with the Giants, he played in all 17 games, tallying 47 tackles, a career-high four interceptions and 17 passes defensed. Clearly, Bradberry still has a lot left in the tank. Now, he’ll get a chance to face his former club twice in 2022 and, perhaps, give them some second thoughts about releasing him.

For what it’s worth, the Giants explored bringing Bradberry back on a cheaper deal. The Texans, Chiefs, and Raiders were also connected to him, but the Eagles ultimately placed the winning bid. Now, Bradberry will team with Darius Slay and Avonte Maddox atop the Birds’ cornerback depth chart.

Bengals To Sign First-Round Pick Daxton Hill

The Bengals have agreed to terms Daxton Hill (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The Michigan defensive back is expected to put pen to paper today, making it all official.

[RELATED: Latest On Bengals’ Bates]

Hill was viewed as the consensus second-best safety prospect heading into the draft, behind only Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton. After the Ravens nabbed Hamilton at No. 14 overall, the Bengals came in to pounds towards the end of Round 1. Many anticipated that Hill would still be on the board to start Day 2, but the Bengals weren’t willing to risk it.

Hill’s versatility is viewed as a major plus — he could see time at free safety, strong safety safety, or even reps as a slot receiver. On the defensive side, Hill notched 69 tackles for the Wolverines last year, including 4.5 tackles for loss and half a sack. He also nabbed eight passes defensed and two interceptions, giving him four picks across his three seasons.

In accordance with his slot, the No. 31 overall pick will earn $13MM over the course of his four-year rookie contract. This year, he’ll start with a modest $705K base salary and carry a $2.4MM cap figure. His salary will escalate over the life of the deal, ending with a $4.2MM cap charge in 2025. Of course, by then, the Bengals will reserve the right to keep him for ’26 via the fifth-year option.

Bears To Meet With Keith Kirkwood

The Bears will host Keith Kirkwood on a visit today, according to a source who spoke with Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link). If all goes well, the wide receiver could join Chicago’s 90-man offseason roster with a chance of making the final cut towards the end of the summer.

[RELATED: Bears Sign 16 UDFAs]

Kirkwood has previously spent time with the Saints and Panthers. He appeared in nine games for the Saints between 2018 and 2019 and suited up for another four contests with the Panthers in 2020 and 2021. All together, he’s got 17 catches for 239 yards and two scores to his credit.

The Bears probably aren’t looking at Kirkwood as a leading target, but they could use some improvements at wide receiver overall. Currently, their WR depth chart is led by Darnell Mooney, Equanimeous St. Brown, Byron Pringle, Nsimba Webster, and David Moore with support from third-round rookie Velus Jones Jr.

Still, offensive coordinator Luke Getsy recently told reporters that he’s fairly comfortable with the current group.

Of course everybody wants Davante Adams,” Getsy said (via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune). “But Davante wasn’t Davante until he became Davante. I think the system will enable some of these guys to play at their potential. We’ll give them an opportunity to show what they’ve got.“

Getsy went on to explain that quarterback Justin Fields is getting “much more comfortable” with his receivers, but Bears fans would still like to see a proven veteran added to the mix. Kirkwood doesn’t quite fit the bill, but the Bears could have some new options to explore once teams begin their summer roster shuffle.

Eagles Fire Scouting Director Casey Weidl

The Eagles have fired director of scouting operations Casey Weidl, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The move comes just days after the draft, which was widely regarded as a success for the Eagles.

[RELATED: Perry Signs With Jaguars; Nixes Eagles Deal]

Weidl spent the last two years as the Eagles’ director of scouting operations, but he’s been with the front office for several years. He’s also the brother of Eagles vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl and McLane hears that his future is also in question. No matter what, Andy may be moving on anyway — he’s among the candidates to take over for Kevin Colbert as the Steelers’ general manager.

The Eagles have yet to respond to McLane’s report, but it sounds like a scouting shakeup is imminent. Meanwhile, the rest of the front office will spend the coming weeks signing its incoming draft picks:

Commanders Notes: Wentz, Samuel, Ownership

It’s been a strange journey for Carson Wentz. Even though the quarterback is now with his third pro team, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is confident that this time will be the charm.

All those guys come out and say, man, this guy was a good teammate, this was a guy that pulled us tighter, this was a guy that helped us get where we are or headed toward — you feel positive about that, you really do,” Rivera told Rich Eisen (audio link via NBCSports.com). “And it’s an exciting thing to hear that, that his teammates spoke of him in that fashion.”

Wentz was widely panned for his Week 18 showing against the Jaguars, the loss that cost the Colts a playoff spot. He also clashed with team brass throughout the year, leading some to question Wentz’s character. Still, Rivera & Co. see real potential in the former No. 2 overall pick, especially after he posted a solid 27-7 TD-INT ratio.

The one thing I do look at is the fact that at one point he was 11-2 [in 2017],” said Rivera. “And, of course, he hurt his knee in a year he was talked about in the MVP conversation. So, there’s a lot of things that go into play, a lot of things happen. But, to us, this was a positive. We were looking for a guy of his stature, with his kind of ability. So to be able to pick him up and make the deal for him, we feel very positive about that.”

Here’s more from D.C.:

  • Curtis Samuel hardly played for his new squad last year, but the wide receiver says he’s ready to go full speed (via Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post). “I’ve been training and working out, and I haven’t been limited to anything,” he said. “I’ve been doing pretty much everything that I used to be able to do — running fast, cutting fast. I’m just feeling good overall, and I’m excited about it. This upcoming season, I got a lot of goals.” In the 2021 offseason, Samuel inked a three-year deal worth up to $35.25MM with $24.5MM guaranteed. Unfortunately, his groin injury limited him to just five games last year.
  • A former Commanders exec submitted a 22-page letter to the Federal Trade Commission, detailing years of alleged financial impropriety. The Commanders have responded, calling the allegations “baseless,” “false and reckless,” and based on “pure speculation,” (via ESPN.com’s John Keim).
