Bears To Promote Sean Desai To DC

The Bears interviewed a few outside candidates for their defensive coordinator job but will make a promotion instead. They are elevating safeties coach Sean Desai into the DC role, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.

Desai, 37, has been with Chicago since 2013. He worked at the quality control level for several seasons but coached Bears safeties over the past two. It is believed Desai will become the first person of Indian descent to become an NFL coordinator, Rapoport adds.

Desai joined D-line coach Jay Rodgers as internal candidates to succeed Chuck Pagano. He will take over a defense that has ranked as a top-10 DVOA unit in each of the past three seasons. The Bears interviewed George Edwards, James Bettcher, Colts DBs coach Jonathan Gannon and Mike Singletary for the job. A Hall of Fame Bears linebacker, Singletary re-emerged on the interview circuit after a lengthy absence. But Chicago is going with Desai, who holds a doctorate degree from Temple.

While Desai does not have much experience as a position coach in the NFL, he did serve as a special teams coordinator at Boston College prior to turning 30. He worked in that capacity with the ACC school in 2012, doing so after spending five years at his alma mater as a special teams assistant.

Such a Bears move…what’d they do, ask each candidate their salary demands and then hire the cheapest one?

That’s exactly what they did. Also no experienced candidates wanted it because they know the whole staff might get whacked

He has more coaching experience than Brandon Staley, who became a DC, and now a head coach.

True. And he was the first guy Vic Fangio tried to hire when he left for Denver and the Bears didn’t allow it. Biggs of the Chicago Tribune has been writing about how sharp the guy is and that he’s been looked at around the league as a potential head coach. Maybe not so dumb a hire after all.

I don’t have a problem with the Bears giving Desai a chance to show what he can do. The team will probably dump both Pace and Nagy in the near future anyway and embark on a rebuild.

Another stupid hire by the worst organization in football , he’s the cheapest they could find ,
Next year 4-12 will be a miracle

Spending big bucks doesn’t guarantee any success. The Raiders gave Gruden $100M and how has that worked out?

Tru dat say bye keep Nagy/Laser for offense give this guy a year to see then re hire Lovie never knew why a winner 10-6 was fired a year after a runner up in Super Bowl

What did you want for them to do?! Hire Wilson? Singletary? Three defensive coordinators in 4 years tells you all that you need to know. It’s an organizational problem. Period. The defense got tired and quit halfway through the season. There’s too much talent there for it to get this bad this quick.

Believe me I know what their doing, I went to Notre Dame HS with the losers running the team now, George was the worst QB in school history but he played because of his last name, Virginia please sell the team, your an embarrassment to the Bear’s, ur not ur grandfather as he would have fired you !!!
