With the top two spots on the quarterback depth chart accounted for, the Saints will be moving on from Blake Bortles. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports (on Twitter) that the veteran has asked for his release, and that the team will accommodate him.
The 29-year-old signed with the Saints in December when New Orleans desperately needed help at the position. With Jameis Winston injured and both Taysom Hill and Trevor Siemian unavailable due to COVID-19, he provided the team with an experienced backup behind Ian Book. He didn’t see any game action in New Orleans, however, which continued an ongoing trend in that regard.
Bortles has bounced around to the Rams, Broncos, Packers and – most recently – Saints over the course of the last three years. He’s only been on the field for 11 snaps during that span, though. His last meaningful playing time came during his five years with the Jaguars. That span included a trip to the AFC title game in 2017, but was otherwise underwhelming, especially considering his draft status.
New Orleans re-signed Winston to be their starter once again, but also added veteran Andy Dalton to be the backup. With those two on the roster (along with Hill, though the team doesn’t view him as a QB moving forward), the former third overall pick will now look to catch on with another new team.

Love the Blake, always have.
Do you smell QB in the Saints draft future? They made the big move up the board, advertised early and now thinned out the QB depth? Let’s see if their player is still there now they made it clear their intentions? Hope it works out for them.
I honestly believe that they moved up to get a LB/OL that they figured wouldn’t be there at 19. I honestly believe that the Howell smoke was just that.
I think releasing Blake Bortles is just an indication that they had Blake Bortles. They have two much better QBs. They may well have made that trade to fill two other needs, like WR and LT. Two picks in the back half of the first round with a checkered group of QB prospects isn’t exactly a guarantee they’re going that way.
they had Blake Bortles?
Book is on the roster in addition to Hill.
Top 3 are Winston, Dalton, and Book. Bortles was never going to unseat Book, a recent draft pick.
If the Saints draft a QB (or even if they don’t), they’ll probably try to sneak Book on to the practice squad.
I’m shocked that even one NFL team wanted Book in the first place.
If the answer to anything is Ian Book, ask a different question.
He started over Bortles.
like many teams, I don’t think they’re looking for a QB unless one they like is there round 2
kinda looks like Dalton was brought in incase Winston isn’t ready to go.
other than Atlanta, Seattle & Carolina.. many of these QB rooms don’t look like they’re going for a R1 QB
I will always love Blake for one thing… The Good Place. That’s pretty sad.
Blake Bortles and Josh Johnson should hook up and open an NFL apparel store. I think they collectively have all 32 team jerseys by now.
Have to give Bortles some credit. He keeps cashing checks in the NFL.
