5:27pm: Prescott has undergone the thumb surgery, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News (on Twitter). The operation was successful, but the wait begins. Rather than acquire another quarterback, the Cowboys are sticking with Rush. The former UDFA has been Dallas’ primary backup since Tony Romo‘s 2017 retirement. Prescott is expected to attend the now-Rush-centered position meetings as he rehabs.
8:51am: The Cowboys suffered a significant loss on the scoreboard and the depth chart last night, as quarterback Dak Prescott left the game with a thumb injury. He will undergo surgery to address the issue, which ESPN’s Todd Archer reports is expected to keep him sidelined for six to eight weeks. As a result, Archer adds, Prescott will likely be placed on IR.
During postgame availability, head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that the injury is “significant.” Prescott, meanwhile, offered a somewhat encouraging update by saying that the fracture in his throwing hand “was much cleaner than it could have been.”
Nevertheless, the injury is a crushing blow for the Cowboys, whose offense already faced plenty of questions heading into last night. Left tackle Tyron Smith will be sidelined until at least December due to a torn hamstring, and the injuries to wideouts Michael Gallup and James Washington leave the team with few established pass-catchers. Overcoming those absences will be significantly more difficult without Prescott, who will be on the shelf for the second time in the past three seasons after an injury-free start to his career.
The two-time Pro Bowler was limited to five games by an ankle injury in 2020, but still landed a $40MM-per-year deal the following offseason. He played in 16 games last year, posting an 11-5 record while throwing for 4,449 yards and 37 touchdowns. Expectations were high for he and the team again in 2022, but things have changed dramatically in the span of one night.
“It’s very disappointing,” Prescott said, via Bobby Kownack of NFL.com. “But injuries happen. You can’t necessarily control it. It’s just unfortunate… but I’ll do what I’ve always done any time adversity comes. Take it on headfirst, give it my best, and I’m sure I’ll come out of this thing better.”
Cooper Rush will now take over as Dallas’ starting QB; the former UDFA had made 11 appearances with the Cowboys before filling in for Prescott last night (but only one start). He, along with Will Grier, were temporarily let go of during roster cutdowns, but the team fully intended to keep both of them in the fold. Grier will likely be signed to the active roster from the practice squad, unless the Cowboys search for outside options to replace their signal-caller for the intermediate future.

Interested in a lightly used Gardner Minshew Cowboys fans?
I could see the cowboys knocking on Sam Francisco’s door.
Sam won’t answer.
Won’t happen…How would the Cowboys have the cap space to even entertain Jimmy G…..point in fact if Jimmy G is going anywhere, its back to Coach Belichick now that he’s got a QB situation also.
Hmmm…deal a very good backup to a division rival, possibly saving their season? Yeaaaah – not gonna happen
If they offer a second rounder for him I’d take it in a second.
lol, ya think?
Minshew isn’t saving jack
Minshew would probably fail in Dallas too. Dallas is starting to look like Cleveland. If I were him I’d rather backup Jimmy G.
They need front office blood. Dallas has lost touch.
Hmmm…deal a very good backup to the hated Cowboys, possibly saving their season? Yeaaaah – not gonna happen.
You think Minshew could walk in the door during the season and keep that roster in contention? Come on. I’d get the Eagles not wanting to trade their backup when they’re playoff contenders, but a second rounder would be an overpay for Minshew.
And what about Jimmy G’s 2022 salary….exactly how would the Boys fit him in……all their money is tied up to 2 players, one of which is now out for 6-8 weeks.
Cowboys have ~$11M of cap space. JG’s restructured post June 1 Trade Cap charge is $12.5M. Not impossible to fit in for a Cap specialist.
A tweak here, a cut there…
Haha no buddy Cooper rush is the same thing big guy only with red hair
Not so sure you guys wont be needing minshew either tuts
So glad the Cowboys gave him all that money instead of pursuing a much cheaper option like Jameis Winston.
Paying Dak instead of opting for someone like Winston is obviously the better move. Bad injury luck will happen. But having $26 million in dead money and another $19 million going to a running back while you have a tattered offense and no backup quarterback isn’t bad luck. That’s the result of bad decision making.
Owner Jerry Jones should have fired GM Jerry Jones years ago.
GM Jerry Jones has basically handed off his duties to Stephen Jones. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, Stephen is an even bigger buffoon than daddy
They’ve generally done a very good job adding talent in the draft, but they approach contracts as if they don’t affect each other and tomorrow will never come.
“paying Dak is obviously the better move”……really….and exactly how many playoff games has Dak been victorious in? Can’t have it both ways….Dak’s a winner when they win and the team around him is the reason they lose…..paying Dak, let alone Elliott, a ridiculous amount of money has hamstrung the Cowboys into making monumentously bad personnel decisions….and us Giants fans though Getty was bad…..
And how many times has Winston even made it to the playoffs? Paying Dak isn’t the reason this team is a mess. Paying Jaylon Smith way too much (which they’re still doing) is a reason. Paying Elliot too much for even the very best running backs–which he never was–is a reason.
But also, still better than Gettleman.
Look at how much it cost to have Winston. Even if he’s average, it’s better than an IR QB
Winston was IR for most of last year.
As a Giants fan, please. Gettleman is/was way worse than Jerry or Stephen Jones.
The Cowboys were going to have QB problems this season regardless. Dak looked clueless last night prior to the injury.
He’ll have to learn a new system anyway after the season. when the cowboys fire Mc.Carthy
Yea…Seemed like receivers and he couldn’t get on same page at all
Have the Eagles locked up the division after Week 1?
Washington seems to be the team to beat in the Nfc east
Because they narrowly beat Jacksonville?
The Eagles barely survived that Lions game. A win is a win, though.
Yeah, we’ll see. I like parts of Washington’s team, but I’m pessimistic about that roster’s chances when they’ll need Wentz behind a spotty line to save them. Not sure how that defense will hold up against teams with good receiver groups. I guess we’ll see in a couple weeks against Philly.
Really……did you actually watch the Washington game?
no. I’m trolling chill..
but I do find Wentz very underrated and Colts are morons for replacing him with noodle arm
Good luck with Detroit. They will crush you!
Lots of teams showed the value of playing your starters for at least a half in the pre-season.
Dak is turning into the brittle man.
steelers will give you both Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky for one 4th round pick
Might be a good time to ask in on Lamar!!!
Trade for Jimmy
I know he’s injured and I wish the man nothing but a full and quick recovery, however I will never understand the hype about him. Dallas may be honestly better off finding someone else to play this position after all..
The earliest they could realistically get rid of him is after next season, for cap reasons. I think he’s a top dozen QB who would be great to operate the offense they were supposed to have, with a great crop of wide receivers and a strong line. Now that both those things are depleted and he doesn’t have a particularly strong coach either, there’s a limit to how much he can put the team on his back.
Cowboys cap space is 11 million . Garapollo contract is 7 million . They can afford him.
If they don’t sign Jimmy G. hook or crook they simply aren’t serious about this season. They can’t afford to band-aid with Cooper and expect to win the division.
Actually, they’d need to trade for JG since he resigned with SF. And, I doubt SF will trade JG until they are fully comfortable with Trey Lance.
Andy Dalton and Ben DiNucci headed back to Dallas…
Or maybe they’ll have Tony Romo study the playbook during broadcast commercials.
I can see the Cowboys calling about Mason Rudolph.. Cooper Rush and I think most Cowboys fans agree just isn’t that good. Pittsburgh might be the only team looking good on the QB depth chart. Maybe the Cowboys inquire on Tim Boyle from the Lions practice squad? He played for McCarthy in Green Bay. He won’t cost anything as he’s a practice squad guy.
Boyle is available because he’s a stiff, he’s no better a choice then those they already have.
Jerrah should get on the phone to Joe Douglas and trade for Joe Flacco. The Jets can ride with White and preseason magic man Streveler until Zach Wilson is healthy.
Lol no, the Jets aren’t going without a single experienced QB on the roster again, nor are they counting on Mike White’s one game being predictive.
Flacco was awful vs. Baltimore — the Jets’ lone TD came in garbage time — and he threw a pick-6 in preseason. It’s not like White and Streveler don’t have experience.
It is very much like they don’t have experience. They’ve attempted a combined 157 passes in the NFL. They opened 2021 with Zach Wilson in a QB room with no one else who had ever been a starting QB in the NFL before. They can’t do that again. It’s not like they’d get anything worth anything in a trade for Flacco.
The cowgirls with dak were going nowhere, this only solidifies that fact. The division belongs to the eagles.
Makes me happy when Jerry takes it up the exit.
Throw in the towel for the year and get as high of a draft pick as possible. If the quarterback you want is available, take him
I can’t believe you haven’t mentioned the obvious choice. The QB of all QB’s. Don’t be bothered that he hasn’t taken a snap since the 2016 season and had an abysmal 1-10 record as a QB that season. He’s hot off of throwing drills without any defensive pressure and would likely come cheap.
Johnny Manziel comeback will be epic!
The “ Genius” Jerra will figure it out. Look what he did 26 years ago. LOL
I like how cameras pan up to jerrah and his boy Spaulding’s suite (from caddyshack) to gage his reaction …
The Cowboys were a 10 win team before this injury. Now? Perhaps 7 wins.
How old is Jerry going to get before he realizes he’s lost perspective?
Dak is done. DONE. It’s his throwing hand. Put numbers on that.
Besides, the ‘Boys have plenty of issues. If a QB can’t realize the plays he’s in are uncoordinated garbage who’s to blame? Who cares? Let Stephen A. laugh another season.
They’re just going to continue to sink and stink.
I just watched my Broncos get beat out of bad practice tonight, but it was a good fight. The Cowboy’s offense is AAA ball while their solid D gets out the rake.
Denver lost because of an epic brain fade, one that Andy Reid wouldn’t top.
Denver lost for a solid number of reasons. Fortunately, I think a number of them are due to their coaching being new and they can curb them over the next number of games.
The Cowboys? Man, I don’t know crap about football and not even a quarter in I was like this play is terrible.
At least in Seattle it was a game. Denver still amassed over 300 yards before douching out. That final drive where they ignored 3 timeouts is unprecedented though. Hackett needs to watch some Elway re-runs from the 90’s – that’s how it’s done…Pitiful.
Big Ben out of retirement?
Rothlisberger is available…….?
