MAY 18: Purdy’s extension with the 49ers also includes a full no-trade clause for the duration of the contract, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. That has become standard practice for major quarterback extensions, though it remains unclear if Purdy received a clause preventing San Francisco from applying the franchise tag on him at the end of the deal.
MAY 17: While a rolling guarantee structure will help protect Purdy down the line, he still is believed to have received a nine-figure guarantee at signing. The 49ers are giving their franchise QB $100MM locked in up front, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reports. Purdy becomes the 12th active QB to secure a $100MM full guarantee.
Passers earning less per year (from Deshaun Watson to Lamar Jackson to Justin Herbert to Kyler Murray) secured more at signing, though it will be interesting to learn how the 49ers have structured Purdy’s rolling guarantees. The seventh-round success story, who secured all of $77K when he signed his rookie deal, should see more guarantees vest a year out moving forward.
MAY 16: Brock Purdy will not need to wait until training camp to ink his extension. The 49ers’ starting quarterback agreed to a deal Friday, Tom Pelissero, Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network report.
This will be a five-year, $265MM pact, Purdy’s agent informed the NFLN trio. The league’s latest monster QB deal includes $181MM in total guarantees; that figure consists of $165.05MM covering the next three seasons. Purdy is now on the books through 2030. The $181MM amount represents the injury guarantee, and Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer notes it contains a rolling structure.
San Francisco has long known a mega-pact was coming in this case. Whereas many of the team’s big-ticket extensions have dragged into the summer during recent years, that will not be the case with respect to Purdy. The former ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ has handled starting duties since midway through his rookie campaign, and that will remain the case – as the team hoped – for many years to come.
Purdy was due to collect a base salary of $5.35MM in 2025, the final year of his rookie pact. A massive raise was known to be in store, and negotiations began not long after the end of the season. Progress was made in relatively short order, and general manager John Lynch targeted voluntary offseason workouts as a timeline for an agreement to be in place. Indeed, prior to the start of San Francisco’s OTAs, the team’s most impactful piece of business has been taken care of. The fact Purdy was present for the beginning of voluntary work last month represented a clear sign this agreement was close.
This deal’s AAV of $53MM moves Purdy into a tie for seventh amongst quarterbacks in terms of annual earnings. The 25-year-old is on level terms with Jared Goff and narrowly behind Tua Tagovailoa in that respect; both of their deals were signed last offseason. In all, 11 signal-callers are now attached to a pact averaging at least $51MM per year.
Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo going down with season-ending injuries in 2022 opened the door for Purdy to take over as the team’s starter. The Iowa State product helped lead San Francisco to the NFC title game that year and to the Super Bowl during the following campaign. Despite making a clear error by trading up to the No. 3 slot in 2021 to draft Lance, the 49ers have thus received stable QB play (and at a fraction of the cost of veteran passers, of course). That will no longer be the case moving forward, but expectations will remain high for the team’s offense.
Throughout his tenure in the Bay Area, Purdy has enjoyed the benefits of San Francisco’s left tackle and skill-position investments. Wideout Deebo Samuel was traded earlier this offseason, but Trent Williams, Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle – himself the recipient of a recent extension – remain in the fold. Purdy saw his league-leading yards per attempt average (9.6) drop to 8.5 from 2023 to ’24, but a rebound could be in store provided the team can avoid the injury issues of last year.
While much of San Francisco’s offensive core has remained intact this spring, the team’s defense has undergone a number of changes. The need to budget for this Purdy extension represented a key reason for that, but in general a number of new faces will be counted on to contribute right away at important positions. The 49ers made 11 selections during last year’s draft and in doing so added necessary cost-effective options to compensate for the surge in operating cost under center.
Questions linger about how much longer the 49ers’ current core (which still includes All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, likely the team’s next extension priority) will remain intact and thus whether or not San Francisco’s Super Bowl window is closing. The extent to which a return to contention will take place in 2025 but also well beyond that point will be driven in large part by Purdy’s ability to deliver on expectations while playing out this deal.
Let’s hope that elbow isn’t cooked.
What is with all you people on this site that just to be negative immediately on every subject?
His comment wasn’t negative. Even if it was his name is Darkside lol
Yes it was. Immediately bringing up that you are hopeful that someone doesn’t get hurt after they sign a contract, when there is nothing about any injury going on, is looking to the negative.
Given that Purdy doesn’t have elbow issues, I’d disagree
Has it occurred to you that you’re being negative about all the negativity
Lol. That is ridiculous. He’s a very good game manager. He’s not elite at anything.
Don’t be a hater!!! For being a 7th round draft pick and Mr.Irrelevant I’d say he played the game perfectly with the contract he got he over achieved my hats off to him!!
I’d take him over Goff and Tua
Not an SF fan, but he’s got more play off wins than Dak, Lawrence, tua…combined.
So a quarterback who’s undeniably played well, but has questions about his upside and how much credit his offensive support system deserves for his success got the same amount per year as Tua and Goff, but with a little bump in guaranteed money. Sounds about right.
Those teams over paid for Tua and Goff. Can’t blame the league for not everyone overpaying. In reality, Purdy should be getting this and those 2 should be getting much less.
I don’t disagree with your take… but I will say what is Aiyuk and Samuel really…? They don’t win one on ones. That’s why we need Gabe Davis. Samuel is fun to watch at times. But it’s all or nothing with him Aiyuk to his credit has made huge plays on the biggest stage. His line better get better hurry… that’s the real truth
I’ve absolutely seen Aiyuk beat a lot of man coverage. And he’s just one part of the support system. Until last year Purdy has worked with the best set of weapons in football, plus maybe the best left tackle and elite play caller.
“That’s why we need have Davis” sorry. But if you are relying on Gabe Davis to save your wr room, you got major issues.
Remove Goff and add Lawrence….
Naw Lawrence is still young and still has upside imo. In comparison to Goff I’d rather have Lawrence especially in a team that’s not the jaguars
Hahahaha you would take drag queen Eli manning over Goff? That’s all we need to know. Just go ahead and delete your account and try again.
Calling a guy with long hair a drag queen is all we need to know about you. Go drink some bleach and delete yourself.
Lawrence is going into his 5th season, and is 0-1 in the post.
Dak 2.0
Bro couldn’t win with the avengers squad, this will age bad
The hell are you talking about?
It’s a comic book series, if my sources are reliable.
Purdy is the poster boy for all of us who managed to achieve the “irrelevant” part of the equation but are still searching for that monster payday…lol.
Its about time
Brock Purdy is 13-1 with All the Avengers.
When 1 Avenger is missing he’s 6-13.
Which one of CMC and Trent Williams are you pretending wasn’t a huge loss?
That’s two of the 5 Avengers.
Not sure your question makes sense for my comment.
He was missing several elite players last year.
There won’t be many elite players left when you pay a dude that much.
I am convinced the best route for a franchise is to build a young qb up, trade him, rinse and repeat. That is until you find a top 5 guy. Top 6?? He gone.
The team that paid Jalen Hurts is making it work.
His contract is still cheap.
What? Hurts got five years $255 million with $179.3 million in total guarantees two years ago. If you adjust for cap and quarterback market inflation, Hurts’ deal is bigger than Purdy’s. As is, it’s very similar. Hurts definitely isn’t top five and Philly definitely still surrounds him with a lot of elite talent.
Hurts cap number was 13MM last year. 21MM this year. They haven’t felt the HURT yet.
I would also argue that hurts is worth that. Paying a top 12ish qb(ie purdy) that much is a cap killer.
Honest question: do you believe that Hurts is a better QB than Purdy? I’m curious what people think on that.
I would take hurts over purdy short term. Long term hurts will break down with his style of play.
Purdy is a top 7 talent and is being paid accordingly. His cap hit will 19%. So you’re flat wrong.
Purdy is getting a bump this year so it’s more like 6 years at 45 million a year. its a win/win for both sides. We all know these contracts never play out and will be restructured later so the notion that they won’t afford anybody is overblown and overused.
Side note – When Fred Warner signs his extension, the 49ers are going to be around 50 million under the cap. They can add another piece or two if they need to.
“I am convinced the best route for a franchise is to build a young qb up, trade him, rinse and repeat.”
I’ll modify this. If the young QB you build up is elite (Mahomes, Jackson, Burrow, Allen, etc) or fits your system perfectly (Hurts; helps if you draft well and develop talent as well as the Eagles do), you keep him and pay through the nose. Spend the rest of your money on the OL and use the draft for defense and skills positions. Splurge on the right player (like Saquon).
For the next tier down of QBs, the big deals don’t make much sense. The elite QBs don’t need necessarily need to be surrounded by elite talent. Guys like Purdy, Dak, etc do need that.
I think there’s merit to this idea, but less so for the people who might get fired for willingly sending their teams into QB purgatory. It’s easier for us outside to like the idea.
Oof, you make a great point. We have the luxury (if not always the expertise, admittedly) of making these decisions under no pressure. The execs don’t have that (even though, really, they should be making the right decision no matter what). Hard to go to your boss after two sub .500 seasons after letting your good-not great QB walk after he demanded too much money.
That said, you can still win with that, but it takes more investment. The Eagles built a star studded roster to prove that point recently. Of course, they have a GM who has the security to make whatever move he wants to in order to facilitate that process-most GMs don’t have that luxury.
Qb purgatory is a risk, but it is also risky to pay huge money for a qb outside of the top 10.
I don’t think this constitutes “huge” money for a successful starting quarterback. Seven guys make more per year, another three guys make within two million as much as he does per year, and he signed after all of them when the cap has been going up a lot. Throw in the fact that at least another ten starting quarterbacks aren’t even allowed to sign their second contract yet, it’s actually kind of middle of the pack going rate starting quarterback money, especially for a guy whose team has made it to at least the conference championship two of the last three years. And it’s not like you can reasonably rank him far outside the top ten without getting into eye of the beholder territory.
You are missing the point ooof. It’s fine if you want to pay purdy top 10 money but if you don’t get elite qb play despite what injuries happen around him it just doesn’t work for a guy of his caliber. Doesn’t matter if 7 guys make more than him. To pay top qb money for anything short of elite play puts a low ceiling on a teams chances.
I think you’re missing my point. If you’re the most recent to sign and you’re behind seven guys and barely ahead of three, then functionally you’re not making top ten money. By the time his contract actually kicks in next season, he’ll be out of the top ten already without adjusting for inflation. His contract also runs through 2030. In 2029, the NFL will get new TV contracts. Likely before then, the league is going to add an 18th game. The cap is going to absolutely skyrocket. Getting contracts done on the earlier side is good business. I have my hesitations about Purdy too, but the problem with a contract like Dak’s is that they delayed it over and over again and ended up paying him 20% more than they would have had to otherwise. Purdy won’t even turn 26 until late in the season and he’s been a very successful starting quarterback, and he’s getting what will be much less than elite money over the course of the deal.
Both of y’all have good points, I think. No, Purdy isn’t making relatively that much for his position, but it is a good bit of money to pay if you don’t get top quality play (not saying that Purdy won’t give top quality play, of course).
The counterpoint is that, with the rising cap, that amount of money is relatively not as impactful, but it’s worth considering when these discussions come up if it’s better to keep moving until you do find that player that ‘s definitively worth it.
You could stick with your guy, I think, but you’ll have to pump more resources into his supporting cast than you would otherwise. In that case, the best trait to look for may be reliability over anything else. As far as Purdy goes, I don’t think that is a bad contract in today’s environment, especially given the 49ers’ very scheme rooted offense. For a team like KC, or Buffalo, whose offense depends so much on the quarterback’s playmaking, it probably wouldn’t be as good.
Jackson is an elite athlete. He is not an elite QB. In fact, he’s bad when it actually counts.
That is the sad state of the nfl. This is why the Dallas Cowboys are going to have to trade Micah
Went from Mr Irrelevant to Mr RelevantAF
Outhouse —> Penthouse
Gotta love a great underdog story!
Agreed but 53 mill is insane lmao
In two years guys w kurt cousins levels of success will be eclipsing that
It just isn’t. Completely deserved and a good contract for both sides. But keep coming with the uninformed takes.
Meh
Yes for him it’s amazing. And what most sports watchers don’t know. Is some guys play better with a full bank account. Rare. But if anyone does it. It’s this guy.
Outhouse –> outback steakhouse maybe, paying a lot for not much.
Nah. He is now Mr OverpaidAF
Bs. As long as Dak still exists, he owns all those titles.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
53 mil a year and still only 7th on the list. Oh to be a QB in the NFL
All the people hating on this dude are ridiculous.
People always seem to forget
1. It’s not all guaranteed.
2. The cap goes up every year
Overthecap currently predicts a base salary cap of 311 mill in 2027. So by the time 2030 rolls around cap could be approaching or going over 400 mill which is about 120 mill increase to 2025s 280 mill
He’s a good but not elite QB . This seems like an overpay but this is NFL QB inflation I guess.
Exactly. Potential to be elite outside of his size.
He’s way better than just good.
The people disrespecting this guy are ridiculous.
He’s better than Trevor imo who’s making more right? The QB market isn’t win and skill based unfortunately lmao Mahomes would be highest paid if so
Good luck with that.
Signed -Cousin era Vikings
lol. Most teams would suck d first cousin era. But the 49ers shouldn’t be lining up for that with their aging roster. lol
Not bad for the last pick in the draft. Goes to show, picking high doesn’t guarantee anything.
Cough cough Mitchell Trubisky cough cough Trey Lance
Being high when picking explains some draft boards.
Not going to claim I’ve seen a ton of Purdy and the Niners
But, when I have I’ve seen him throwing to guys who were schemed open rather than making big plays himself.
Highly skeptical of this deal.
Even the niners skeptical. Lol
It’s obvious you’ve never watched him. You don’t know what you’re talking about. Dude makes off schedule plays all the time.
He had an all star team for his entire career. All I’m saying. He needs to start already. lol
Huh? Why you responding to me? My comment was in response to 66TheNumberOfTheBest.
Oh. I see the format now. Lol. I just come here and have fun. My bad. lol
All I’m saying is he has the ability to prove himself. As he moves to fill the cracks of his aging and constantly ailing team.
Brock is our best and most consistent QB since Jeff Garcia. We don’t need him to be a superstar, just reliably above average, which he is.
Only thing that could derail this deal is the lack of investment on the OL, especially at LG and C
I think he is an easy guy to root for. Im glad he got paid…
But he is a backup outside a Kyle Shanahan offense.
I really hope it works out, and I am by no means rooting against him. These SF teams were fun and interesting.
But I think this makes two bad contracts. (Aiyuk)
Absolutely hosed. But with these 2 guys. They have greatness in them. lol. It might line up. But regardless of performance. They paid retail.
What a ridiculous comment.
Right. What was he thinking. The internet be interneting again. Sheesh
Why does anyone care what not important thinks?
He adds nothing.
He added “ridiculous comment” lol. Ridiculous comment tbh. Lol 😝
Not a bad guarantee amount. They were cooked. 49ers have to get consulting help on contracts. One of the only teams constantly getting cooked. lol 😝
It’s a fair deal for both sides and I’m glad to see Purdy get paid…not the top or bottom but right where it should be and when he continues to play at the level he’s shown it will keep the 49’ers in the thick of things for the next few seasons
I’ve been wondering if in the history of ‘Mr. irreverents’ has any achieved Brock’s level of stature.
Some commenters don’t take into account the taxes that come with this amount of salary as CA is one greedy State.
Money isn’t real
Nor are birds
Purdy is a great success story and one of the luckiest guys in the NFL. Alot had to happen for him to get to this point and he’s earned it.
This is more about the state of QB’s in the league. Teams would rather overpay mediocre guys than be on the other side of the fence looking for a QB. Case in point…Trevor Lawrence.
Imagine calling Purdy mediocre.
Imagine thinking he’s not in a great system with a solid supporting cast and that has nothing to do with his success. He is mid, he’s just in a great situation. Speak with your head not your heart.
You described 98% of the NFL quarterbacks,
You made my point. The 2% are elite. Not the 98%.
That’s purdy good
This guy has been overlooked, overshadowed his entire football career and he does it the right way and played out his rookie deal without threat of ever sitting out and gets paid about where a starting QB that has had success in the NFL should be paid and people still hate on him…I applaud him for being a stand up guy that plays at a high level and when he gets the 49’ers back into the NFC playoffs he will have been worth it.
Good Guy and well deserved
Congrats Brock
Yeah the comments reek of people who don’t actually watch football.
A “bad” year from Purdy to date is a lot of QB’s best year.
Wow. Terrible over pay for a Tua level QB. Sorry Niners fans your SB window just slammed shut.
Just completely nonsensical comments.
Excellent, well thought out rebuttal, sir
There’s a lot of idiots rebutting in this thread tonight. If Purdy had the same cast in their prime for the next 5 years, he’s worth it. He has shown he cannot carry a team himself.
0523 – thats it.
Its more than fair to question if Purdy can lift a team, or if he needs a superior coach and cast.
To me – Purdy has nothing elite about him. If Lynch can find a way to keep surrounding him with great players and it works out – awesome. Im all in.
But if he can’t, this contract will look bad.
Im just glad my team isn’t making this commitment – but Im rooting for him.
How many QBs can? I can name 5 and all get paid more.
Fans struggle with QB contracts so it always becomes “he’s overpaid!” arguments. It’s pretty clear he’s now adequately paid based on similar QBs in that tier with similar results. That doesn’t even factor in a large cap increase.
And for those suggesting the Niners cap is cooked just isn’t paying attention to what they just did this offseason. The future is bright.
I guess we will see wont we?
Bookmark this and revisit in a couple years.
But Ive always been very vocal about paying mediocre QBs – especially ones that don’t possess elite athletic traits.
Paying one means you stop the search about getting another one.
What will we see? He’s already an above average QB with elite traits, just not the ones you value. You seem to be putting him in a different tier. Elite QBs are the goal but that alone doesn’t really mean much for what truly matters which is playoff success. As a Bills fan you should know that.
Uhh?
Which elite traits?
This will not age well. He showed how mediocre he is when he didn’t have his full complement of elite weapons. The epitome of a game manager but being paid (taking up precious cap space) like an elite QB.
Are there QBs who actually perform much better when their complement of elite weapons are injured and unavailable? Even Tom Brady complained loudly when he thought the Patriots weren’t maintaining a high level of receiving targets.
I don’t envy the position John Lynch was in. The risk with this deal is huge but if he let Purdy walk and they struggled then the ownership would’ve assuredly blamed it on him letting Purdy walk and fired him. Either way, Lynch had to make a massive gamble. Not sure how this contract is structured but if it’s like Hurts deal where a lot of the cost is pushed into void years they might be ok.
price of business
Utterly ridiculous contract. Guy is barely an average game manager. GM malpractice.
Says the guy still hyping Justin Herbert, probably.
Great story for a kid picked dead last in the draft…..
Im surprised there are not three movies about this.. I guess they are waiting out to see if he wins a SB.
I don’t imagine Hollywood could make this movie worse than the Dolphins “pet detective” flick…although some dopey casting director could create a real stinker by giving Adam Sadler the lead role 🙂
PURDY GOOD DEAL !!
Time to cook! Let’s go!
Josh allen,MVP 55 million.Purdy 6-9 record 20 tds 12 Picks 53 million.This makes total sense lol.
Cool, now do Purdy’s 2023 season also.
What a make
